Un-christian dance during Mass irks Ndola bishop

CATHOLIC Diocese of Ndola Bishop Benjamin Phiri is concerned about the manner some Christians dance during Mass, with a call on regulation and self-control on how they express themselves in church.
Bishop Phiri says singing and dancing in church is not for entertainment purposes, hence should be differentiated from the moves demonstrated in places like bars and nightclubs.
“The dancing part of the church should be regulated. It should constitute worship. The dance and rhythm that we have in a pub should be different from the one that we have in the church, otherwise in the end, the two will become one,” he said.
Speaking during the consecration and dedication of the church building at St
Martin Deanery in Kitwe, Bishop Phiri said liturgy (religious ceremony) in church should not be turned into entertainment because it [church] is meant for worship.
He said the dance in church should be respectful as congregants give thanks and glory to God.
“Not kutyoka tyoka maningi [do not gyrate too much] because at the end of the day, someone will start admiring the other and then, they will end up having thoughts which are not of worship, which is not the idea of the Church.

The shortest marriage lasted 9 days in 2022

The number of couples who asked the courts to dissolve their marriages throughout the country has risen by about 9,000 cases to reach 31,000 last year from 22,000 recorded in 2021.

From the 31,452 applications for divorce, the courts gave the go-ahead to 15,147 while 16,305 were not granted.

The reasons for seeking divorce are familiar – infidelity and drunkenness.

The shortest marriage among those dissolved lasted nine days and involves a couple from Eastern Province, the region that has been recording the highest number of divorce cases the last three years.

If it is any consolation, in 2021 the shortest marriage lasted 30 days.

The oldest couple that sought divorce lasted about 78 years in matrimony in North-Western Province compared to 67 years in 2021.

MILLERS RECORD AROUND 20% REDUCTION IN MEALIE MEAL PRODUCTION DUE TO CURRENT LOAD SHEDDING

By Michael Kaluba

The ongoing load-shedding has resulted in up to a 20 percent reduction in the production of mealie meal, which has the potential to cause shortages of the commodity on the market.

Millers Association Of Zambia-MAZ president Andrew Chintala has disclosed that the power outages have left some millers with between 15 and 20 percent slump in production while those who have maintained production levels have had to incur extra costs on backup-up power supply such as generators which require huge amounts of diesel.

Mr. Chintala has further disclosed that there are ongoing talks between ZESCO management and the association toward mitigating the impact of these outages by providing technical support to the mills and following the preset load-shedding timetable to allow millers to maximize the hours available to them.

In an interview, Mr. Chintala is hopeful that the revised load management schedule will help millers to sustain production, and help them plan properly.

ZESCO CAUTIONED AGAINST OVERSIGNING PPAS.

Energy Expert Johnston Chikwanda has cautioned power utility firm Zesco to be very careful not to oversign power purchase agreements (PPA) for expensive power from independent power producers which it will in turn sell at a loss.

Dr. Chikwanda adds that ZESCO must be very careful with some clauses in PPA such as "Take or Pay" clauses. In moments like this when the pressure is so high, you can sign PPAs that you can regret in the near future.

He said ZESCO are getting excited at the possible massive investment commitment but who is the offtaker and at what price?

Dr. Chikwanda said currently Zesco is operating at a loss partly because of expensive IPP power so care must be exercised how much more independent power it can onboard.

"Let's rework the tariff structure and make it health investment without over burdening Zesco", he said.

Paid retired teachers told to vacate institutional houses

GOVERNMENT has directed that retired teachers who have received their terminal benefits should vacate institutional houses to give an opportunity to serving educators to be accommodated.

Ministry of Education Permanent Secretary Joel Kamoko said in an interview that he does not expect to see retired teachers occupying government houses after receiving their packages.

Mr Kamoko said institutional houses are for serving public service workers, hence the need for retirees who receive their dues to seek accommodation elsewhere.

“I want to instruct all those who will receive payments to pave way for [serving] teachers by vacating the houses,” he said.

FRED M'MEMBE SAYS HH CANT BE TRUSTED.

Socialist Party President Dr Fred M'membe says it is very difficult to trust President Hakainde Hichilema’s word as you can’t count on it.

Dr M'membe says President Hakainde Hichilema has promised so many things, from cheaper prices for fertiliser, mealie meal and fuel to ending electricity load shedding, and he has not delivered on any of them.

He said Mr Hichilema doesn't take ownership of his failures or mistakes but only boasts, brags and postures all the t⁷ime.

Dr. M'membe said the President doesn't live by the same standards he expects from others, and he is very likely to end up as Zambia’s most corrupt President, who uses all sorts of fronts to hide his business dealings etc. He doesn't seem to believe in transparency.

"Mr Hichilema doesn't stand for what is right but rather, what is convenient. He is a shameless opportunist and that is why today he is caught up in so many contradictions. He is being caught in his web of lies every day. People of integrity don't live this way", he added.

Dr M'membe said this is definitely not the sort of leadership Zambians expected from him – they have been shortchanged.

Zambia obtains a Readiness Package Grant of US$145,000.00 from the Adaptation Fund.

The Government of the Republic of Zambia through the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment has obtained a Readiness Package Grant of US$145,000.00 from the Adaptation Fund to facilitate the accreditation of Zambia Industrial Commercial Bank to the Adaptation Fund.

The grant will help strengthen the capacity to access climate adaptation finance, and the overall capacity to develop and initiate implementation of concrete projects and programmes that increase the resilience of vulnerable communities to the impacts of climate change. Zambia has never accessed climate financing from the Adaptation Fund.

However, Zambia initiated a process to do so which is currently underway. Further, the nomination of Zambia Industrial Commercial Bank for accreditation as a National Implementing Entity will also increase these chances to access climate financing from the Adaptation Fund.

When ZICB is successfully accredited, Zambia will be able to access Adaptation Fund grants through a Direct Access Entity. The Entity will be able to manage all aspects of the project, from formulation to ex*****on by hand-holding the project developers.

The Centre de Suivi Ecologique (CSE) of Senegal, which is working in collaboration with Zambia’s National Designated Authority (NDA) in the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment, supported Zambia’s application for accreditation to the Adaptation Fund.

The NDA identified CSE to provide intermediary services and to assist ZICB in the preparation and submission of its accreditation application. The Adaptation Fund provides grants through its Readiness Programmes to enable National Implementing Entities to provide peer support to others in navigating the accreditation process while strengthening countries’ capacities to achieve Direct Access.

Ministry of Green Economy and Environment Permanent Secretary Mr. John Msimuko welcomed the Adaptation Fund’s grant of support to Zambia. He said the support includes among others, updating manual of internal procedures and developing the following documents: Code of Ethics, Transparency Policy, Environmental and Social Safeguards policy and Gender Policy, Project Cycle Management, Monitoring and Evaluation guides.

The support will enable the Zambia Industrial Commercial Bank meet the Adaptation Fund accreditation requirements for a National Implementing Entity eligibility.

The Adaptation Fund finances concrete adaptation projects and programmes in developing country Parties to the Kyoto Protocol that are particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change.

The Adaptation Fund aims to help vulnerable communities in developing countries adapt to climate change. The Adaptation Fund’s support is based on country needs, views and priorities.

This is contained in a statement issued by Ministry of Green Economy and Environment Communications Office Chibaula Silwamba.

Government commences distribution of disease-free cassava planting materials.

The Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit working with stakeholders have commenced distribution of disease-free cassava cuttings to farmers in selected districts in Luapula and Northern Provinces that have been affected by Cassava Brown Streak Disease.

A total of 2,500 farmers in 5 districts namely Kawambwa, Nchelenge and Chiengi in Luapula province as well as Kaputa and Nsama in Northern Province will benefit from the disease-free cassava cuttings that are being distributed.

The distribution of disease-free cassava cuttings is one of the ways of halting the further spread of the brown streak disease which is mostly spread either through the movement of CBSD infected plants from affected regions or through plant to plant by white flies.

The official flag off ceremony of the distribution of cassava cuttings was conducted in Kawambwa District at the Sunbird Bioenergy farm and was graced by Luapula Province Permanent Secretary Mr. Mighty Mumba and DMMU National Coordinator who was represented by DMMU Director in charge of Disaster and Humanitarian Operations Management, Mr. Paul Samboko.

Speaking shortly before flagging off the distribution exercise in Kawambwa, Mr. Mumba called for concerted efforts from all stakeholders and cassava farmers in implementing measures to curb the cassava brown streak disease in order to ensure food security not only for the province but the country at large.

Mr. Mumba reiterated government’s commitment to helping cassava farmers whose fields have been affected by the brown streak disease in the two provinces.

Speaking earlier, DMMU Director in charge of Disaster and Humanitarian Operations Management Paul Samboko urged farmers to avoid sharing infected planting materials in order to stop the rapid spread of the disease in the region.

Mr. Samboko observed that importing cassava planting materials from neighboring provinces or beyond the borders has potential to accelerate the spread of the disease if the imported cassava cuttings are infected.

And Sunbird Bioenergy Limited Africa Director in charge of Agriculture Mr. Mark Muchinga assured the government that the cassava cuttings they have supplied had been subjected to disease treatment and since certified to be disease-free by the Seed Control and Certification Institute (SCCI).

Mr. Muchinga disclosed that the variety of the cassava planting materials they have supplied are early maturing and gives farmers better yield per hectare compared to the indigenous variety.

The Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit through the Zambia Agricultural Research Institute (ZARI) has also sensitized and trained all the farmers in the five districts in best agronomic practices relating to cassava, as well as disease identification, and control.

This is according to a statement issued by DMMU Senior Communications Officer Mathews Musukwa.

Guinea-Bissau pays tribute with King Pele stadium

The Estadio da Rocha in Guinea-Bissau's second city Bafata is to be renamed the King Pele after the late Brazilian football icon, the country's government has decided.

The stadium - which is home to Sporting Clube de Bafata - is the second African ground to be renamed in honour of Pele, following a call from Fifa's president Gianna Infantino that countries around the world should make such a change.

Guinea-Bissau's near neighbour and fellow Lusophone country Cape Verde announced that their national venue would be named the Pele Stadium on Wednesday.

"As an expression of the public recognition of his status as the King of World Football, the Council of Ministers decided to name the regional stadium of Bafata 'King Pele'," a government statement said.

The statement also explicitly said the decision was "in response to the appeal of the president of Fifa."

BBC Sport Africa has been told that Ghana's National Sports Authority is also considering renaming one of its stadiums.

Pele is credited with scoring a world record 1,281 goals in 1,363 appearances during a 21-year career, including 77 goals in 92 matches for his country, and was named Fifa's Player of the Century in 2000.

Heavy storms have in the last few days swept away some maize, soya, groundnuts, beans and to***co fields in Chinama Ward and other places in Kanchibiya Constituency, a situation that if not addressed will further expose affected and vulnerable families to hunger and poverty.

Area Member of Parliament Sunday Chanda has since appealed to seed companies to stand with these affected families in their time of need.

Mr. Chanda has requested for legumes which the affected farmers will be able to plant within the month of January 2023.

He said part of Kanchibiya’s medium to long-term objective around food security is to establish local seed banks to be run by cooperatives at Ward level which will not only assure food security at community level but serve as the first point of call when such emergencies arise.

UNDEMOCRATIC TENDENCIES HAVE NO PLACE IN MODERN SOCIETY-CCZ.

The Council of Churches in Zambia is dismayed with the behavior of ruling UPND Cadres that stormed Kokoliko Radio Station in Chingola thus disrupting a live radio program that was featuring Chilufya Tayali an opposition leader.

The Cadres further went on to disrupt a similar radio program that was scheduled for Mafkeni Radio station in Mufulira in a bid to block the same political stakeholder.

Shamefully, in the two videos circulating on social media, UPND members are proudly with impunity claiming they chased the named Zambian citizen and that they will take the law in their own hands.

CCZ General Secretary Father Emmanuel Chikoya says the Church Mother Body finds these acts as barbaric and very undemocratic, as such acts are a threat to the democracy we enjoy.

Father Chikoya has since called on the Zambia Police to act professionally and decisively by putting an end to this uncalled-for behaviour by arresting and charging the perpetrators.

He said the police should endeavour to act as an independent body as opposed to portraying a picture of taking sides when dealing with political players particularly those from the ruling party.

Father Chikoya said the UPND leadership is also urged not to sanction such undemocratic tendencies that have no place in modern societies.

"Yes, we appreciate the pronouncements by some UPND officials condemning such acts but condemning alone without action is not enough. Zambians deserve better than is obtaining on the ground! Let us Walk the Talk", he said.
