Let’s talk about the EGPWS ( Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System ). 🔈⚠️✈️

Back to the ATPL study days and using the mnemonic ‘ Send (1) The (2) Daugher (3) To (4) Go (5) Buy (6) Wine (6):

1 Sink rate - excessive rate of descent ( ROD ), ROD increase rapidly.

2 Terrain - excessive terrain closure rate.

3 Don’t sink - loss of altitude after take-off / go-around.

4 Too low - incorrect landing gear / flap configuration

5 Glide slope - descent below glide slope.

6 Bank Angle / Minimums - situation awareness.

7 Wind Shear - reactive windshear warning

The EGPWS was introduced in the early 1990s. It was developed to enhance aviation safety by providing timely warnings to pilots about potential collisions with terrain, obstacles, or other hazards.
It’s known as one of the greatest inventions in the aviation industry, having significantly reduced the number of aviation accidents after its implementation, especially accidents related to controlled flight into terrain ( CFIT ).

Being “on profile” with the PAPIs (Precision Approach Path Indicators) during landing is ✈️ essential for pilots. PAPIs are visual aids that assist in maintaining the correct glide path for landing an aircraft. When a pilot is “on profile,” it means the aircraft is following the recommended glide path indicated by the PAPI lights, typically two red and two white lights. ⚪️⚪️🔴🔴

Staying on profile ensures that the aircraft is descending at the correct angle for a safe landing. If all lights appear white, the aircraft is too high, while all red lights indicate the aircraft is too low. A combination of red and white lights indicates the aircraft is on the correct glide path.

Pilots rely on these visual cues to make precise adjustments during the approach phase, ensuring a smooth and safe touchdown. Being on profile with the PAPIs is a fundamental aspect of a successful and controlled landing, providing crucial guidance for pilots in navigating the final approach and touchdown phase of a flight. 🛬

Unlocking the Secrets of Wind in Flight! 🌬️✈️

Let’s breeze through some aviation essentials: Different aircraft speeds - IAS, TAS, and GS - what do they mean? Discover the significant impact wind has on flight time and fuel efficiency. 🕰️⛽

IAS (Indicated Airspeed): the speed of the aircraft through the air felt by the aircraft and indicated in the instruments (not completely real)
TAS (True Airspeed): The actual speed of the aircraft through the air, corrected for altitude and temperature, providing a true measure of the aircraft’s motion relative to the air mass
GS (Groundspeed): The actual speed of the aircraft over the ground, accounting for the effect of wind on the aircraft’s TAS, providing the true measure of the aircraft’s progress over the Earth’s surface

Headwind slows you down, decreases your Groundspeed, increasing flight time and fuel consumption from A to B. ⏰
Tailwind speeds you up, increases your Groundspeed, reducing time and fuel used, from B to A.

However, in a round trip, assuming the Wind remains constant, it always seems to work against us, why? 🔄
It’s a matter of proportions.

Consider a scenario where an aircraft has to fly a distance of 100NM and an airspeed of 100 knots.
This would take 60 minutes each way.

If it encounters a 20-knot headwind, GS is 80kt.
100NM at 80kt takes 75 minutes

If it encounters a 20-knot tailwind, GS is 120kt.
100NM by 120kt takes around 50 minutes

So a roundtrip would take 120 minutes in a no-wind scenario and 125 minutes in this scenario. It is always negative for us: more flight time and more fuel burned 😔

Therefore, smart planning means strategically adjusting altitudes and routes to chase those tailwinds, shaving off precious minutes. Choosing longer ground routes can sometimes mean shorter flight times. 🕰️✈️

Ever wondered what happens behind the cockpit door during the cruise? 🚪✈️

Dispelling the myth: Autopilot doesn’t mean we just sleep in cruise! 😴
There are several things a pilot has to do while cruising through the sky:

1. Flight duties: during the cruise, as with any other phase it’s all about teamwork. Duties are divided between both pilots, one is PF (Pilot Flying) and the other PM (Pilot Monitoring).
PF is responsible for flying the plane, managing the autopilot modes, and constantly monitoring PFD (Primary Flight Display) and FMA (Flight Mode Annunciator).
PM is responsible for communicating with ATC, through voice or CPDLC texts, monitoring the aircraft systems, and monitoring the navigation by filling the Navlog. In the Navigation log, the PM monitors the time of passage in each waypoint to know if the flight is on time and also does fuel checks along the route to ensure no fuel leaks exist and that fuel is balanced.
Both pilots are also in charge of monitoring weather conditions along the route and deviating from any adverse weather.🌧️💨

2. Whenever time permits, we ensure our Logbook stays updated. A pilot logbook is a personal chronicle, capturing every flight since day 1 of pilot training - documenting hours, destinations, experiences, and details that narrate our entire aviation journey. 📖

3. Before descent, it’s all about prep: airfield briefings provided by the company, approach and ground charts, NOTAM checks, and weather updates via ATIS. We finish this preparation by briefing each other on what we will do.

4. Long quiet cruises are study sessions - extensive manuals, procedures, and keeping the knowledge sharp. This is crucial for us to be ready to face anything. 📚

5. Every window becomes a canvas, painting breathtaking views day or night. At night the celestial theater is unveiled: shooting stars, Starlink constellations, other planets, and the occasional mysterious lights... 👽🌌
