Why do cats knead?

Ever see how cute cats are when they "knead" or massage you?
But why do cats do that?

Kneading is a common behavior seen in domestic cats, in which the feline pushes in and out with its front paws, alternating between left and right.
Cats often do this motion in soft surfaces like blankets, pillows, and most often, in their human's body.

There are three main hypothesis why cats knead:

First, it's an instinct they have from when they were kittens. Kittens knead their mama's breast to stimulate the flow of milk. They take that behavior until they became adult. They associate it with the rewarding comfort of nursing.

Second, it's their way of claiming an area. So when they knead our faces, that might mean they're marking you as theirs.

Third, it is a sign of affection. So everytime they're kneading you, it's they're way of saying "I love you."
