El Dorado finished third Sunday in the UCA National High School Cheerleading Championships in Orlando. The Cheer Cats advanced to the finals of the three-day event and threw a zero-deduction routine, scoring 96 to place behind San Antonio's Alamo Heights and Tomball Memorial in the Super Varsity Division II Non-Tumbling Game Day Division.
Maddie Aguiluz
In Monday’s newspaper is a feature on El Dorado wrestler Maddie Aguiluz. The headline I chose referred to the sophomore as “Mad Dog Maddie.”
For the record, her nickname isn’t Mad Dog. No one calls her Mad Dog. I’m pretty sure she wouldn’t answer if you called her Mad Dog.
After I wrote the story, I had the brilliant idea of assigning her a wrestling nickname just so I could use it in a headline. After all, great fighters have a nickname - Rowdy Ronda Rousey, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Iron Mike Tyson, etc.
As one might imagine, Maddie was skeptical.
Here’s our series of texts:
Me: Maddie, what would your wrestling nickname be? It should be something small and dangerous.
Maddie: I’m not sure. What do you think?
Me: The Poison Dart Frog, Rabid Chihuahua, The Mosquito, Little Big Mama, Baby Anaconda?
After several minutes of deafening no response …
Me: Ask your parents what they think.
Maddie: I will ask them.
A few minutes later …
Maddie: Maddie Mad Dog Aguiluz, that’s what my mom says.
Me: You like it?
Maddie: That or Savage Queen. I don’t have a preference. You pick.
O.K. Personally, I liked Rabid Chihuahua but I can certainly see the appeal of Mad Dog Maddie. No idea what Savage Queen means. I guess that’s a teen thing or some Tik Tok craze.
As you could tell by the series of texts, Maddie really wanted no part of any of it.
In all seriousness, I watched high school wrestling for the first time last week at Wildcat Arena. I hope it won’t be my last time. It was fun and very intense.
I’m a big fan of Mad Dog and Dunte Maker and all of their teammates. I can hardly wait to see how far they advance in the state tournament.
