Southwest Hunter, often referred to as Leavitt Peak, is one of the Catskill 3500 peaks. It stands at an elevation of 3,740 feet. Unlike nearby Hunter Mountain, which is the second-highest in the Catskills, Southwest Hunter is much less frequently visited. The peak is densely forested, offering no views compared to Hunter Mountain next door with its many views and Fire Tower.
Reaching Southwest Hunter requires a bit of navigation, as there is no official trail to the summit. The typical route is via the Devil’s Path and then an unmarked but well-known and easy to follow herd path to the top, but we decided to bushwhack the peak from Lanesville and follow the remnants of the Fenwick Logging Company railroad.

Mount Pemigewasset is a prominent peak in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, located within Franconia Notch State Park. At 2,557 feet, Mount Pemigewasset is known for its distinctive profile. The most popular route to the summit is the Indian Head Trail, a moderate to challenging 3.8-mile in and out hike that begins south of the Indian Head Resort on Route 3. The mountain can also be climbed via the Mount Pemigewasset Trail, which begins at the Flume parking lot off our Route 3 just before it joins Interstate 93 to pass through Franconia Notch. That route is 3.4 miles in and out.
For the effort of the climb, you are rewarded with stunning views of the southern end of Franconia Notch, the surrounding peaks, and the Pemigewasset River valley.
For this hike we strung together the Indian Head Trail, the Mount Pemigewasset Trail, and a road walk on Route 3 to create a almost five mile loop hike. The hike started at the Indian Head Trail trailhead on Route 3, climbed Mount Pemigewasset on the 1.6 mile long Indian Head Trail, then descended to the Flume Parking Area on the 1.7 mile long Mount Pemigewasset Trail, and then walked down Route 3 1.5 miles back to the Indian Head Trail trailhead to complete the loop.
The total hike is about 5 miles in length with about 1,500 feet of elevation gain along the way. The hike is moderate to difficult, with some steep and rocky spots along the way.

Whitaker Point, also known as Hawksbill Crag, is a stunning overlook in the Ozark National Forest near Ponca, Arkansas and adjacent to the Buffalo National River area.Hawksbill Crag is accessible via an easy to moderate 3-mile round-trip hike (in and out) with about 400 feet elevation gain. From County Route 5, the trail descends gently through dense forests and in about a mile reaches the beginning of the cliffs that form Whitaker Point. The trail follows the edge of the cliffs for another half a mile to the rocky outcrop that is Whitaker Point/Hawksbill Crag. The point provides breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape, but is very high for those hikers who may be afraid of heights. One should exercise caution due to the cliffs on and around the point. One returns to the trailhead on County Route 5 the same way you reached Whitaker Point and now you climb the 400 feet of elevation that you lost on the way to the Point. There’s no water to speak of along the trail, so be sure to bring water and wear appropriate footwear. This is a easy to moderate hike over rather gentle terrain (with a few short eroded sections). The total mileage is 3 miles. Elevation gain is 400 feet, but it’s important to remember you descend to the point and then you’ll climb back up the car - the opposite of your average mountain hike.Important Hiking Considerations:1. Weather: Check the weather forecast before your hike and be prepared for changes in conditions. 2. Safety: Some sections of the trail can be steep and rocky, so use caution and watch your footing.3. Leave No Trace: As with any outdoor activity, remember to follow the principles of Leave No Trace. Pack out any trash, stay on the trail, and be respectful of the natural environment.
Glory Hole Falls is a unique waterfall located in the Ozark National Forest near the town of Deer, Arkansas and within the Upper Buffalo National River area. Unlike typical waterfalls that cascade over the edge of a cliff, Glory Hole Falls features a stream that has carved a hole through an overhanging rock, creating a waterfall that pours through the opening, or glory hole.
The hike to Glory Hole Falls is an easy to moderately challenging trail that is approximately 2 miles round trip (in and out). The trail descends through a dense forest, along a generally easy grade, though closer to the falls, the trail does descend more steeply. The area around the falls provides excellent opportunities for photography, picnicking, and simply enjoying the beauty of this hidden gem in Arkansas.

Imp Loop Offers Amazing Views of the Presidential Range in the White Mountains
Nestled in the heart of the White Mountains, the Imp Trail in Pinkham Notch, New Hampshire, offers hikers a rewarding adventure through forests and rocky terrain. This 6.5-mile loop trail includes an elevation gain of around 2,100 feet. The trail's highlight is Imp Face, a striking rocky outcrop/cliff providing panoramic views of the Presidential Range, including the iconic Mount Washington.
We hiked the loop clockwise - Parking the truck at the southern Imp Trailhead and then walking north on Route 16 to the northern Imp Trailhead and beginning the hike there. From the northern trailhead, the Imp Trail ascends just over two miles to the Imp Face/Cliff. From the Imp Face, the trail continues to climb more gently and makes its way to the intersection with the North Carter Trail in about a mile. From there, the Imp Trail descends about three miles to the southern Imp Trailhead.
The total hike is about 6.5 miles in length with the roadwalk and there's about 2,100 feet of elevation gain along the way. The hike is generally moderate, though there are a few steep climbs as you go up to the Imp Face.

Arethusa Falls and Frankenstein Cliff Loop Hike in the White Mountains
The Arethusa Falls and Frankenstein Cliff Loop offers amazing views from high cliffs and a majestic waterfall in New Hampshire's Crawford Notch State Park. The loop is a moderate hike that begins at the trailhead parking area on Route 302.
We hiked the loop counterclockwise - up the Frankenstein Cliff, following the Frankenstein Cliff Ridge, dropping down to Arethusa Falls, and then back out to the trailhead parking area on Route 302. We'd recommend doing it this way, as some of the climbing up Frankenstein Cliff is steep and it's definitely easier to ascend then descend.
The total hike is 5.1 miles in length and there's just under 1600 feet of elevation gain along the way. The hike is generally moderate, though there are steep climbs up Frankenstein Cliff, which may be a bit unnerving for someone afraid of heights.

Hiking Black Fork Mountain in the Ouachitas
We were joined by the Oklahomo Hiker to hike Black Fork Mountain in western Arkansas. Black Fork Mountain is part of the Ouachita Mountains and straddles the Arkansas-Oklahoma border. Rising to an elevation of about 2,762 feet, Black Fork Mountain is known for its rugged terrain, dense forests, and unique geological formations.
Hiking up Black Fork Mountain on the Black Fork Mountain Trail is challenging and rewarding. The trail is known for its rugged terrain, demanding a good level of fitness and preparedness, along with a lot of dense overgrowth on the trail, including dense briars. This is a challenging and difficult hike with very rough terrain, high mileage, and very few water sources along the way. You'll hike 12 miles and climb more than 2,200 feet along the way.
