When I was a kid growing up, our town library was up a huge flight of steps. I could only take one step at a time with my right leg. I was so happy to do it because inside that library, there were books with stories about running and stories about baseball and running the bases and stories about dancing and stories about climbing hills. Those were the things that I always wanted to do but really couldn’t -but once I made the steps into that small library and I open the books, I ended up doing all the things I dreamt of and even more. Our children today need those wonderful libraries and places to dream and learn the freedoms that books give us.

I am so happy that the Orlando Sentinel chose to publish my article in today's paper. World Polio Day is next week, October 24! We PPS survivors are still around and am very willing to share the importance of getting vaccinated against polio. As a group, we are aging, and I know we would love the whole world to be 100% vaccinated so at least one more virus will be erradicated FOREVER. There is only one virus that reached total eradication due to a vaccine, and that is smallpox. Let's make polio the second world-wide virus eradicated too.

I was born with polio-my mom got polio in her ninth month. I live now with PPS. I have mastered many mobility aids including my powerchair I use today. Polio is not gone yet. Vaccines work. My life would have been different if a vaccine was available to my mom.

I told my story, our story, really, in my memoir, Somebody Told Me I Could / A Polio Survivor Who’s in it For The Long Haul. Now, the Library of Congress is putting my Memoir on the shelves!
