In the online biz race to make 89-figures per month, somebody also started a race to brag about how many people you have on your team.

I see it all the time --

"I'm making 6-figures with a team of 18 people!"

18 PEOPLE?! I'm running a multi 7-figure business with 2 employees and a small handful of contractors part-time.

Remember: more isn't always the best idea. Lean & mean, that's my style.

It's not as hard or expensive to hire employees if and when we need to. And it's not that hard to treat a contractor like a contractor, or hire one when you need them, too.

It's just about knowing the difference between a contractor & employee, designing your team / assignments & tasks accordingly, and hiring the right people for the right job.

Here are my top 5 tips for hiring:
1️⃣ Make sure: are you really looking for a contractor? (or do you need an employee?)
2️⃣ Have a clear list of tasks that they can do on their own time.
3️⃣ Send them an independent contractor contract to sign before they start. (Bonus: send an NDA!)
4️⃣ Request a signed W9 for your file.
5️⃣ Give helpful feedback on their projects, without making the changes yourself.

This week's new episode is all about the employee / contractor difference, how to know which one you have or need, and...

👉 how to hire your first contractor (legally!) and actually treat them like a contractor so you don't face a whole host of Federal and state fines, penalties, taxes, etc.

🎙 Listen to Episode 64 "Hiring Contractors 101" of On Your Terms Podcast! https://www.samvanderwielen.com/episode-64/ Have you hired your first contractor? Tell me in the comments!

I get so many questions (and hear so much bad advice floating around) relating to liability and business insurance. So, I want to clear a few things up for you! 🙃

Business insurance financially protects your business and can potentially offer coverage for things that happen in your business, like providing you with a business defense attorney if a client threatens to sue. That can also — in theory — pay for any lawsuit settlements or judgements.

Swipe to learn about two situations and the specific type of insurance they'd need to cover any liability.

Interested in more info like this? 🎧 Tune into Episode 42 of https://www.samvanderwielen.com/episode-42/ listen to "Business Insurance Mistakes That Could Cost You BIG."

Inside the episode, I break down the myths, teach you what business insurance really is, how it works, and what some of the most common mistakes are for people who already have it.

Biz insurance is not as difficult as you might think! Just don't make the mistake of completely ignoring it, because it can come back to bit you later. 😑 Do you have biz insurance? Drop a 🙌🏼 if you're covered!

There are times when it’s best to focus on the tasks in front of you—it’s how you get things done.

The downside of being too caught up in our daily tasks is that it keeps us from asking the big-picture question we need to ask around our business, like: “Is this business actually working for me?” “Is this getting me closer to my goals?” “Am I the one who needs to be doing this?” “What is this action getting me towards?”

Without asking these questions, our daily actions may not push us in the right direction.

Want the unlock on running a successful business? 🔐 That's exactly what I'm giving you in this week's podcast episode.

When we’re working in your business daily and in the weeds it can be hard to see and remind ourselves what the big picture is.

Sometimes in business, we need to zoom out and see the whole thing from above ground in order to see the plan and how it all fits together.

I’m going to share how I integrate this practice of high-level observation into my own business and the ways it benefits me—as well as how I make a flow chart to direct my marketing and business decisions.

IMPORTANT REMINDER: The money your business makes isn’t your personal income.

Yep, that’s right. When you hear people bragging on IG that they’re millionaires because their biz made a million dollars in revenue…. They’re not millionaires. (Or at least that’s not why)

And even more importantly, that means that your self-worth doesn't need to be tied up in your revenue either. Your business is a separate entity from you as a human.

In today's episode, I’m going to share how I paid myself in the beginning, the step-by-step process I recommend for setting yourself a financial cushion, and how to get to a place where you can pay yourself consistently.
