I’ve got a tree in my front yard that has prompted a number of people to ask me what kind it is. It is a northern catalpa. I had never seen a catalpa until we moved to Gothenburg, but there are a number of them in this area and I’ve seen them along the river.

Monday, Oct. 23, saw the end of their high school volleyball careers for seven South Loup student-athletes: Grace Bierman, Maggie Birkel, Delaney Rogers, Bryn Schwarz, Charli Vickers, Delaynie Laible, and Josie Reiff. The ladies went up against North Platte St. Pat’s in a C2 District 11 match-up and played their hearts out, ultimately falling just short of the victory.

Snake stories are like fishing stories; everyone has one and the facts of the story may be a bit more fiction than fact. For example, there is a story out of “Plum Creek” (now Lexington) from 1885 about Dr’s. Stimson and Charlesworth killing a “huge rattlesnake”. While using his whip in killing the snake, Dr. Stimson said the snake bit the whip causing the whip to swell considerably. Not sure how an inanimate whip could swell, but a great story.

Two elderly women were out driving in a large car - both could barely see over the dashboard. As they were cruising along, they came to an intersection. The stoplight was red, but they just went on through. The woman in the passenger seat thought to herself, “I must be losing it. I could have sworn we just went through a red light.”

With a population of just under two million, it isn’t hard in Nebraska to find just one, maybe two degrees of separation with a good chunk of the state’s residents. This follows the six degrees of separation theory in which it is believed using the “friend of a friend” connection that in six steps or less you can make a connection to anyone on the planet.

McKnight’s Long-Term Care News reported that at last week’s AHCA/NCAL (American Health Care Association/National Center for Assisted Living) Convention in Denver leaders of the nation’s largest nursing home association vowed to “continue to fight against and eventually triumph over a proposed federal staffing mandate that would cost providers as much as $6.8 billion annually and require facilities to hire 100,000 new workers.”

*Editor’s Note: Last week we investigated a proposed staffing mandate that if passed would have a hugely negative impact on rural nursing homes. In part two of our series we

The wind may have been chilly, but the Bobcat football team was hot on the field Friday afternoon against Mullen in Arnold. The Broncos, a team known for having a strong passing offense, were supposed to be a decent opponent for the Bobcats, who are now 7-0 on the season. The wind was a major factor in the Bronco's inability to throw effectively, but the Bobcat defense was also as much of an obstacle to their success.

The American Legion Auxiliary monthly meeting was called to order at 5:00 at the Callaway Legion Hall on Sept. 18. Our meeting was called to order by our Vice President Jane Lashley. Joyce Brestel read the prayer and we then said the Pledge of Allegiance, sang the Star Spangled Banner, and recited the Auxiliary Preamble. The minutes of our last meeting were read by Eileen Wilson. MaryAnn Boldt was not present but she had prepared a financial report which Jane read over with us.

The Lady Bobcat volleyball team (7-11) had a rough week, dropping two of their three games.

They hosted the Ansley Litchfield Spartans on Tuesday in Callaway and went 3-0. The first set started off in favor of the Lady Bobcats, with them having nearly a 10-point lead over the Spartans. But costly errors allowed the Spartans to score 10 points unanswered in a set that went into extra points, with the Lady Bobcats losing 25-27.

The Bobcat cross country team ran the hills of the Kearney Country Club last Monday at the annual UNK Invitational Meet. This was an incredibly full meet with all four classes represented, and nearly 200 girls and 300 boys who competed in Class D. This is also the course used for the state championship meet, so many teams enter wanting a chance to run the course prior to the end of the season.
