The newest movie in the list of changing animation as a whole: Nimona

Nimona is a new Netflix animation, carrying on the trend of mixing CG with drawn elements, and bringing up unique topics. Here are some fun facts about the animation, and why you should watch it.
-The movie is based on a long-running graphic novel by ND Stevenson, and features lovable anti-heroes, with the theme of acceptance being in the center.
-The movie almost didn’t get made, since the original studio, Fox’s Blue Sky Studios got shot down by Disney in 2021. Luckily it’s been picked up again by Netflix, and has found great success, with many people citing it as a great loss for Disney.
- The animation style is CG mixed with drawn elements, featuring a futuristic medieval world-building, with a very strong inspiration from drawn comics. The further an object is from the camera, the more geometric and simplified it becomes.
-The story is about acceptance in the face of tradition, which has resonated very deeply with q***r audiences.

How the Spiderman universe changed animation 🧐

Spider-man: Across the Spider-Verse hit the theaters this month, and has so many unique animation quirks that we have to share some!
👉The movie contains almost all styles of animation- 3d, vector, hand-drawn, collage, stop-motion, often being shown in the same picture.
👉One character took almost 3 years to animate. The punk rebel character is animated on a different frame rate than the others- his body is animated on threes (moving every 3 frames), his guitar on fours, but his outline on ones.
👉The film shows a scene where Spider-man is made out of legos. This scene was entirely animated by a 14 year old teenager, Preston Mutanga, who has been a fan of the superhero for a long time.

The first movie, Spider-man: Into the Spiderverse basically revolutionized the animation industry, since more movies and shows adapted the mixed animation style. We can see this in such animations as Arcane, The Mitchels vs the Machines, and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. Now that the second Spider-man movie broke even more animation barriers, we can expect more change in animated movies as a whole.

Since the Oscars are over, we thought we could share some interesting details about the animation nominees:

Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio is a stop-motion animation, but the movements are smooth, almost lifelike. While most of the film was animated on twos (the film is 24 frames per second, but they shot a picture every other frame, making it 12), some details which required more precise movement were shot with the full frame rate.

Pinocchio’s characters are built on a mechanical body, and covered in silicone. This gets rid of the lines next to the mouth and ears that most stop-motion puppets are known for. This is also the reason why all of the characters are so expressive!

Another nominee which took the people’s hearts is Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, which also renewed animation as a whole. The film uses painted backgrounds and elements instead of models, making it resemble the classic fairy-tale aesthetic. It also plays with frame rate, dropping down to 6 when there’s sudden movement.
