Robbers don't usually leave phone numbers behind, but on Monday, at a Northwest Side muffler shop, a man asked employees to give him a call when their boss came back to open a safe, an employee said Tuesday.

When the 18-year-old returned a few hours later, plainclothes Chicago police officers shot and wounded him the leg, police said. Ruben Zarate of the 5100 of West Schubert Avenue was charged Tuesday with attempted armed robbery and aggravated assault of a police officer, the Cook County state's attorney's office said.

The incident started about 8 a.m., when the masked man, armed with a revolver, came in to Velasquez Mufflers For Less at 2600 N. Laramie Ave. and began demanding money, said Jose Sida, 37, a mechanic.

Employees told him they had little money and couldn't open the safe, so the man left two phone numbers for them to call when the owner returned with the combination, Sida said.

"He said, 'You guys better call me because otherwise I'm going to come back to shoot you,'" Sida said.

Instead, an employee called Chicago police.

Officers dressed in plainclothes came to the shop and told employees to call the man, Sida said. The man returned about noon, wearing the same mask and black clothing and officers told the employees to get to the back of the shop, Sida said.

A police source said the teen pulled a gun from his hooded sweat shirt and at least one officer opened fire. Zarate's injury was not thought to be life-threatening, the source said.

Mark Payne, a spokesman for the Independent Police Review Authority, said the man was treated at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center for a gunshot wound. He said his agency was investigating the police-involved shooting but said that the inquiry would take six months to complete and that he could not release any details.

Sida said the teen's idea to leave his phone numbers was "stupid," but said employees were just following police instructions to call him back.

Employees now are worried the man's friends may return to get back at the shop employees for calling police.

"We followed police instructions, otherwise he would have come back for sure [to rob us]," Sida said.

A bank robbery suspect in Gwinnett County, Ga., is accused of making a crucial mistake following his alleged crime — he let his identity be known.

𝙀𝙧𝙞𝙘 𝙍𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙨 was arrested Tuesday in connection with a spree of bank robberies in Lawrenceville, Ga. after he appeared in an on-camera interview with a local news station for an unrelated story about public transit.

Lawrenceville police say 𝙀𝙧𝙞𝙘 𝙍𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙨 was suspected of having just robbed a Chase Bank and was believed to be in the midst of casing several other banks when he agreed to the interview with the WGCL-TV reporter.

𝙀𝙧𝙞𝙘 𝙍𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙨 removed his hat and du-rag, which he is alleged to have worn during the robberies based on security camera images released by police.

Authorities say after the interview, 𝙀𝙧𝙞𝙘 𝙍𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙨 proceeded to scope out a Fidelity Bank in the area.

“When after having robbed several banks and you are at another bank casing the place for an additional robbery and are approached by a news crew in the parking lot … DO NOT stop and agree to an interview with said news crew,” the statement read.

Police allege 𝙀𝙧𝙞𝙘 𝙍𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙨 attempted five robberies in total, but was successful in making away with money in just two incidents.

“You see, when you accept an interview and provide them with your real name it actually makes our job too easy,” a statement from the Lawrenceville Police Department read.

Two men charged with drug trafficking could have done a better job hiding their wares than using a package labeled "Bag Full of Drugs," Florida authorities say. 𝑰𝒂𝒏 𝑺𝒊𝒎𝒎𝒐𝒏𝒔 and 𝑱𝒐𝒔𝒉𝒖𝒂 𝑹𝒆𝒊𝒏𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒅𝒕, both 34, were pulled over in Santa Rosa County on Saturday after a trooper clocked them going 95mph on Interstate 10 in the state's Panhandle, according to a Florida Highway Patrol arrest report. The trooper determined that Reinhardt was the subject of an active felony warrant for violation of probation. He requested backup. A Santa Rosa County Sheriff's deputy arrived to assist, and a K-9 alerted them to the presence of contraband in the vehicle, the arrest report said.

Authorities found approximately 75 grams of methamphetamine, 1.36 kilograms of the date-rape drug GHB, 1 gram of co***ne, 3.6 grams of fentanyl, 15 M**A tablets, and drug paraphernalia, the AP reports. Both men were taken into custody and taken to jail. They are charged with trafficking in methamphetamine and GHB, three counts of possession of a controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia. "Note to self- do not traffic your illegal narcotics in bags labeled 'Bag Full Of Drugs,'" deputies wrote on Facebook. "Our K-9’s can read." (Another Florida man called police to report a stolen bag of co***ne.)

Officials were left baffled by an Afghan Taliban commander who gave himself up - and then tried to claim the $100 reward for his capture.

Mohammad Ashan, a "mid-to-low-level Taliban commander", was suspected of organising attacks on US and Afghan troops in the east of the country.

According to reports, he walked up to a police checkpoint in 2012, pointed to a wanted poster featuring his face, and asked for the $100 finder's fee.

The authorities were at a loss to explain his actions, although one US official reportedly told journalists: "Clearly, this man is an imbecile.

Woman posts about her own wanted photo: ‘That picture ugly’

A Louisiana woman wanted for second-degree murder was apparently unhappy with the photo officials used on social media to help bring her into custody – and she decided to vent.

“That picture ugly,” Precious Landry, who was still at large at the time, commented on her mugshot uploaded to the St. Martin Crime Stoppers page last month.

“Precious Landry you are always welcome to head over to the Sheriff’s Office and take a new picture if you want,” Crime Stoppers responded. “Or you can just wait to take it when someone turns you in to collect on the $1,000 reward.”

Soon after, the post was updated to say Landry had turned herself into law enforcement. “Thanks for all your tips and information.”

Man sentenced after police find loaded gun in his buttocks during strip search
A Louisiana man chose the cheekiest of places when he needed to find a quick hiding spot for his gun.

Justin Savoie, 24, pleaded guilty Friday to weapons charges after police in the town of Golden Meadow — who were arresting him late last year on a separate matter — discovered he had stashed a loaded .25 caliber Titan pistol in his buttocks, The Smoking Gun reports.

Police had taken Savoie into custody on Dec. 28, 2019, after they responded to “suspicious activity” in a home he was occupying with a female acquaintance, the report said.

Cops said they discovered Savoie possessed a handgun, ma*****na and drug paraphernalia during an initial search.

Multiple other fi****ms were discovered in his truck at the scene, the report said.

But as Savoie was being strip searched after his arrest, police reportedly found the additional surprise weapon “concealed in his rear end.”

The pistol is more than four inches long with a 2.5-inch barrel.

Savoie was sentenced to a five-year suspended prison sentence during a District Court appearance. He received three years probation and an order to serve 90 days in the Lafourche Parish jail, the outlet reported.

As part of the terms of his probation, he’s barred from owning or possessing fi****ms, visiting bars or lounges or indulging in excessive use of alcohol or illegal drugs.

British escaped inmate busted after venturing out to buy ‘Call of Duty’

Clint Butler, a 36-year-old British man, had eluded police for months after escaping from jail in November. But the jig was up after he ventured out of hiding to buy a copy of “Call of Duty: Black Ops: Cold War,” according to the West Midlands Police.

The fugitive — who had served 14 years of a 17-year sentence for robbery and weapons possession — was caught Jan. 13 in Birmingham after officers observed him and a friend suspiciously change directions after spotting police, according to the press release.

When an officer asked Butler and his companion why they were in town during the pandemic lockdown, his friend replied, “I’ve come to get the new ‘Call of Duty’ because I can’t sit around in lockdown,” officials said.

The fugitive admitted he was carrying ma*****na, and allegedly gave police a fake name, according to officials.

When the officers said they’d be running the dimwitted duo’s information, Butler confused the violent video game for real life and attacked the cops, throwing kicks and punches, police said.

He’s now back behind bars and is set to do an extra two years for breaking out of jail and attacking the officers.
