Some BYU middle transition footwork from last Saturday’s Workshop. This is the “4+3 in-a-circle” move that allows the middle to block vs the outside and get all the way across to hit in the Gap.

Breaking down Creighton video for the Coaches Workshop tomorrow (link in bio, 3 spots still open). They were really strong vs opponent 2-hitter rotations. Looking forward to talking with KBB about how they combine serving, blocking, and digging to stop the slide.

Takeaway from Saturday’s workshop with Dave Hyte on BYU middle attacking. In Rotation 5 (Setter in 3), they often just run the middle on a 2-footed backset (“Red” in their terminology) rather than a Slide. They use both, but the Red is often more effective. Not a lot of teams doing this. Could be a nice upgrade for some teams to try.

A follow-up question from this Saturday’s Workshop with “How much of this applies to different levels? Do you coach NCAA D2, D1, International, etc the same?”

Longer blog post on Scoutvb.com as well.

In our workshop this Saturday, talked about using the split-step to help middle-blockers to play faster laterally. This is a topic a lot of coaches are trying to figure out... do you let athletes do it naturally (which many do), or do you train it explicitly?

In this clip you can see the stance widen and her hips drop in this sort of “pre-hop” motion before she makes her block move.

Remember when we talked about Expected Sideout as a measure? Both “Serve-In %” and “Ace %” can be deceptive, as this chart shows.

For this club team, Serve-In had almost no correlation to Pts/Serve and Ace % has some... but it was far from perfect as well.

For teams without the capacity to do an Expected Sideout calculation, I like “Knockout %” as a serving stat.

It’s (Aces + Bad or Medium Passes) / (Total Serves)

I like it because it combines “serving in” with “serving tough” and correlates very well with actual point scoring (see the chart) while being pretty intuitive for players to grasp.

KO % > 50 is good in college and KO > at 67 % (“2 out of 3”) is what high school players should aim for.

Nebraska was really good on the defensive side of the ball this past season. I’m talking with Assistant Coach Jaylen Reyes this Saturday. (Sign up if you want to join, link in bio) What questions do you have?

I want to dive more into systems and tactics, since the last defensive session with Brittany was heavy on individual training. Leave a question in the comments.

A little over 3 hours until I go live with in the Coaches Workshop today! That session is sold out, but there are spots left in future sessions. Grab them while they’re still available! (Link in bio.)

I limit sessions to 20 coaches so that they can be an intimate workshop environment, rather than a mass lecture. So far coaches have been enjoying that a lot. Who else would you want to see?

More debate about where defenders should have their hands and arms in ready position. What do you see in these clips from one of the best in the world?

A few stop-frame breakdowns of some moves I see Wisconsin making on defense. I like the emphasis of driving forward to the ball. They play a lot off a knee, which I don’t normally love, but with a push through, rather than a fall to, the knee. Looking forward to breaking these moves down on Saturday in our Coaches Workshop. Link in bio, but only 2 spots remaining, so move quick!

Prepping for the Coaches Workshop this weekend. Really liking dig moves like this from Wisconsin and want to know more about how they are training them.

I like this digging move by Wisconsin lib Tiffany Clark. Going to be diving into training this move with in our Coaches Workshop Saturday. Just 3 spots left, so sign up now (link in bio) if you want to join the discussion!

4 hours until the Coaches Workshop with Tom Black. Today’s session is focused on Building and Growing a Staff. We have a couple open spots if you want to hop on. (And remember, I’m offering a “pay later” option for those whose budgets are frozen). Link in bio.

Do diggers move their arms independently on defense? This is a hotly-debated topic among coaches right now. Grebennikov sets up arms wide and moves independently to dig with 1 arm but I see him move both arms toward midline and out again when he digs with 2.

How do you teach it?
