✨Episode 79✨We know this year-end period can be cray cray for a lot of us😵‍💫Not only is it crunch time for work, it’s also a time when we all unknowingly scramble to make last-minute holiday plans to make sure we get to recharge and spend time with family. This is why the season 4 of Proudly Asian has been all about mental health and self-care, because it’s important to take care of yourself, and you are not alone in all this!

is known to be one of the most stressful cities in the world, so we are going to talk more about this stressful city in a (hopefully) non-stressful and fun conversation😝What are star tutors? Does going to cram schools work? Do people in Hong Kong ever get off work? Hong Kong born-and-raised communications lecturer Daniel Choy joins us to dissect Hong Kong’s infamous education system and work culture. Maybe we can’t change the system and culture overnight, but being able to openly talk about what sucks and what is not too bad carries power too💪🏻

✨Episode 73✨Being a firstborn (and Asian) is no joke! You're the unpaid intern, the guinea pig of the family, the role model to younger siblings, the babysitter, and maybe also the "retirement plan" for the parents. It is not a "job" you could just quit. And you carry the weight of high expectations, responsibilities, and the perception that "you've got it all figured out" for your entire life🫠

Fellow firstborns, we are dedicating this episode to you: Talking all about what it's like being the eldest child, feelings (yes feelings!), and how you can set boundaries and take care of yourself in this heart-to-heart chat between two very tired firstborns who are finding ways to break the "curse" of being the eldest in the family.

Our guest Mara from Manila - a model firstborn - talks about fighting her sister with real knives🔪Isabel talks about how she is a "firstborn who gave up"🤫

🧘‍♀️Episode 72🧘🏻On this , we hope you are all making taking care of yourself a non-negotiable priority - which frankly should be an everyday priority. Give yourself some extra TLC, take the time to breathe, put away digital devices and delay replying to messages if no one’s life is at risk just because you’re not responding immediately. Breathe, before you take in what’s happening around you.

For this very day, we are talking about on the podcast again. Because we STILL don’t talk about burnout enough. This episode, Hong Kong-based entrepreneur Mandy Pao joins Isabel to chat about their personal experiences coping with burnout, and how Mandy bounced back stronger and started helping fellow entrepreneurs to overcome burnout.

Burnout is more common than you thought, and the most important first step is to acknowledge that you are burnt out. What are the signs of burnout? How do you identify them? And what are the tangible steps you can take to work your way out of burnout?

: Our founder & podcast host Isabel met !

Thank you for not giving up your dream, Ke Huy Quan 🎬

Growing up, I never cared for celebrities. But it wasn’t until this year when I saw the triumphant wins of Asian actors and filmmakers at the Oscars did I realise how much it would have meant for the 5 year-old me if I was able to see someone who looked like me on screen playing a lead role (or non-stereotypical Asian characters) and getting recognised on a global stage. I didn’t care for celebrities because I couldn’t find one I could relate to, yet. And as a child, I thought my Asian heritage, food, culture didn’t matter because there were never any stories that were told from our lens to normalise our experiences. I was used to working so much harder just to be considered for a seat at the table. It wouldn’t be until much later could I proudly own the statement “Asian stories are human stories, and Asian stories belong”.

I bawled my eyes out watching Ke Huy’s Oscar acceptance speech because his journey of becoming an Oscar-winning actor is a reminder to keep our dreams alive even when we don’t have a reason to. He teaches us if our dreams don’t come true during our 20s, we still have our 30s. And if that doesn’t happen, we still have our 40s, 50s - as long as we still have a dream.

Ke Huy also shows us that the most accomplished people are the most humble people around. They recognise hard work and know to never take themselves seriously. He knows to credit film crews who are often the first to arrive on set and last to leave because he’s been there himself. His acting career might not be smooth sailing, but Ke Huy shows us it’s true that the darkest nights produce the brightest stars.

I was star-struck not because he’s a celebrity, but the fact that he’s shown us the impossible can actually be done. He is the reason why I’m Proudly Asian💫

🥟Episode 66🍢For those who grew up outside Asia, being “very Asian” could often be considered a weakness. But time has come for Asian diasporas to flip the script, and one of the trailblazers who is leading the change is Michelle Li, award winning TV journalist and co-founder of The Very Asian Foundation who turned a racist voicemail from a viewer that went viral into a ‘Very Asian’ movement that uplifts communities and voices.

As a Korean adoptee, Michelle grew up in Missouri and has spent years supporting adoptees through heritage camps and volunteer tours to Korea. She talks to us about why it is time for adoptees to reclaim their narratives, and the children's book she authored - "A Very Asian Guide to Korean Food"🥟

🥤Episode 65🇰🇭Have you seen roadside sugarcane juice stands in Southeast Asia? In this edition of , Cambodian-American Entrepreneur Johnny Chhom talks to us about how he modernises the sweet, grassy drink with the ambition of turning it into the next bubble milk tea. He also talks to us about the representation of cuisine and what we can learn about the Cambodian culture through its food.

🥤Sugarcane juice is the liquid extracted from pressed sugarcane. It is a popular summertime beverage in Southeast Asia, North Africa, and Latin America. The juice is extracted using a pressing machine to squeeze the sugary sap from sugarcane, and served cold with ice cubes. Traditionally, it is sold by street vendors in Southeast Asia that set their stall on the street side. In large North American cities, fresh-pressed sugarcane juice is fairly common in Asian and Caribbean grocery stores.

✨Episode 61✨Many would assume Asians in would not hold prejudice against Asians, but that’s far from the case. For example, Hong Kong ethnic minorities have lived in the city for generations and make up more than 8% of the population and yet, they still feel marginalised by the local education system. The plight of refugees and asylum seekers also often goes unseen in Hong Kong, as they represent less than 0.1% of the city’s population; and less than 1% of those seeking asylum have successfully done so. The biases and discrimination faced by ethnic minorities in Asia are, in fact, similar to or even more limiting than what the community in the US and Asians outside Asia go through.

Puja Kapai, a Hong Kong-Indian law professor at the University of Hong Kong, joins us to talk about the far-reaching impact bias and systemic racism can have on a society, why every society can benefit from supporting the development of ethnic minorities, and the work she does putting unconscious bias in Asia on the map.
