Stakeholders have described as disturbing the recent withdrawal of Mali, Niger Republic and Burkina Faso from the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, saying it raises serious concerns about Nigeria’s security.

The development comes amid alleged infiltration and inferences from Western powers, especially the United States of America, USA, and Russia, with a huge presence of Wagner Brothers fighters in the region.

DAILY POST reported that Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso on Sunday announced that they were withdrawing from ECOWAS due to what they called illegal and inhumane sanctions imposed on them following the coups in their countries.

The three countries also notified ECOWAS, the African Union, A.U., and the United Nations of their withdrawal from the regional economic bloc, citing concerns about ECOWAS’s divergence from its founding principles and influence from foreign powers.

Before now, the three countries were suspended from ECOWAS, with Niger and Mali facing heavy sanctions following the military take-over of power that took place in Mali (2020 and 2021) Burkina Faso (2022) and Niger (2023).

Military leaders of the three nations disclosed in a joint statement on Sunday that it was a “sovereign decision” to leave the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, “without delay”.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Anambra Command, said it has secured the conviction of 160 illicit drug traffickers in the state in 2023.

Mr Daniel Onyishi, the state Commander of NDLEA, made this known during a sensitisation programme tagged ‘NDLEA And You’, on Thursday in Awka.

Onyishi said the conviction was a landmark achievement for the agency and a critical milestone in the fight against drug trafficking in the state.

He said the command also intercepted 3.3 tons of illicit drugs and substances in 2023.

“We commend the judiciary for the reforms that are ensuring a faster prosecution of illegal drug peddlers in the state, this will help create a society free of illicit drugs.

“We also appreciate the Anambra government for its continued support to the agency and ensuring that we fulfil our mandate in drug demand and supply reduction.

We are committed to continue closing up on criminal elements that are using the state as a transit route for illicit drugs, as well as those maintaining any form of clandestine laboratory where methamphetamine, popularly known as ‘Mkpụrụmmiri’, is produced,” he said.

The NDLEA commander urged community and religious leaders, civil society, non-governmental organisations and other stakeholders to partner with the agency to win the war against drug abuse and trafficking.

The police in Kano on Wednesday said they arrested five persons over allegations of constituting nuisance and instigating violence while celebrating the Supreme Court judgment on the state governorship election.

Wild celebrations greeted Friday’s Supreme Court verdict, which restored the victory of Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, in the March 18, 2023 governorship election.

The Kano governor had earlier been sacked by both the election tribunal and the Court of Appeal, which declared the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Nasiru Gawuna, as the winner of the poll.

His sacking created tension in the ancient city, while the restoration of his victory brought relief and sparked off wild celebrations by his supporters.

The state Commissioner of Police, Usaini Gumel, on Wednesday, said five persons were arrested following a clash between jubilant supporters of the governor and his party, the New Nigeria People’s Party, and supporters of the APC in the Gaya Local Government Area.

Gumel said, “We have since arrested five suspects, while two victims are on admission at the General Hospital, Gaya,” he said.

Gumel cautioned political actors in the state against violence or acts that could ignite violence. He said the police, in collaboration with other security agencies, had fortified security at all identified hot spots in the state in order to forestall a breakdown of law and order.

“At this moment security has been beefed up in strategic locations to maintain peace. I hereby call on the leadership of all political parties to prevail on their supporters to shun unguarded utterances that may spark violence. We are, therefore, advising them to celebrate moderately without infringing on the fundamental rights of other members of the public.

“Anyone or groups that attempt to disrupt the peace and cause a breakdown of law and order will face the full wrath of the law,” he said.

Gumel assured of the police command’s commitment to providing adequate security for citizens and encouraged them to go about their legitimate businesses.

The Federal Capital Territory High Court has granted the request of a former Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, to travel out of Abuja.

Emefiele, through his lawyer, Mathew Bukka, SAN had requested for a variation of the terms in his bail conditions.

On November 22, 2023, Justice Hamza Muazu of the FCT High Court granted Emefiele bail in the sum of N300m with two sureties in like sum.

Justice Muazu added that the sureties must have landed property in the Maitama District of the FCT.

The judge also ordered the former CBN governor not to leave the court’s jurisdiction and directed him to deposit all his travel documents with the court.

At the proceedings on Thursday, Bukka urged the court to grant the prayers of his client.

He assured the court that Emefiele would not jump bail if the restriction was lifted.

Bukka added that the defendant’s traveling documents are with the court, adding that given the status of the defendant, he won’t jump bail.

The counsel for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, did not object.

He said, “From experience, we have seen cases where travel documents are with the court and the defendant will travel out of the country. What they usually do is to go to the immigration and depose an affidavit that their traveling documents are missing.

“So, in addition to his traveling documents being with the court, he should write an undertaking that the defendant will remain in Nigeria for the duration of his trial. I am not in any way suggesting the defendant will jump bail. ”

Ruling, the judge held that Emefiele must remain in the country pending the conclusion of his trial.

He said, “The defendant’s application is hereby granted. He must remain in the country for the pendency of his trial. “

The Lagos State Government, on Friday, announced a total ban on street trading, hawking, building of illegal structures on drainage and the display of wares on walkways across the state.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, made the announcement in a statement in Lagos.

Wahab said that the State Environmental Sanitation Corps, LAGESC, has been directed to strictly enforce compliance with the environmental sanitation laws.

According to him, the latest offensive is meant to curtail the nefarious activities of hawkers who disguise to rob motorists and also disrupt the free flow of traffic on highways and streets.

Meanwhile, the commissioner also effected the sealing up of Ladipo Market in Mushin in the early hours of Friday.

They action followed several environmental offences, including reckless waste disposal, unhygienic premises and non-payment of waste bills, amongst others.

29/09/2023

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has charged the All Progressives Congress, APC, to come clean on the desperation by its lawyers in the United States to conceal certain vital details regarding the academic records of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Chicago State University (CSU) from the public.

The PDP stated that the application by the lawyers urging the US District Court of Illinois not to release the said academic details are in direct conflict with the public declarations by Tinubu that his academic records are impeccable.

The PDP recalled that Tinubu had in a public function openly asserted to Nigerians that “I was one of those most recruited graduates of my university, multiple honours, First Class Degree and I have the reference point”.

“In view of the above assertion, the PDP therefore holds that the plea by the lawyers that the details of his academic record should not be released is a great disservice to President Tinubu in particular and Nigeria in general,” the opposition said in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, on Friday.

The PDP said that the desperation to conceal vital information is consistent with APC’s penchant for trickery and underhand dealings in their transactions with Nigerians which has heightened under the Abdullahi Ganduje leadership.

According to PDP, by appointing Ganduje as its National Chairman, “despite the malodorous corruption and bribery allegations against him in the public domain, the APC further confirms itself as not only being a cesspit of corruption but also as irredeemably given to concealment and condonement of depravity, sleaze and mendacious acts”.

The party further noted that it is curious that the APC has remained silent on allegations and public apprehension of sabotage in the Monday, September 25, 2023, fire outbreak at the Supreme Court, which it said is suspected to have been an arsonist attack with the intent to cripple and frustrate the Supreme Court in the handling of the Presidential Election appeals pending before it.

29/09/2023

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, (APC), Delta State in the March 18, 2023 governorship elections, Ovie Omo-Agege, has rejected the judgement of the Delta Governorship Elections Petition Tribunal sitting in Asaba, the state capital affirming the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Sheriff Oborevwori as governor of the state.

Omo-Agege, the immediate past Deputy Senate President, while appealing to his supporters and party men to remain calm and law-abiding, said he had instructed his legal team to immediately head to the Appeal Court to challenge the judgement, describing it as "nothing but a grave injustice that will not stand appellate scrutiny."

The three-man panel of the Delta Governorship Elections Petition Tribunal led by Justice C.H Ahuchaogu, sitting in Asaba, the state capital, Friday affirmed the PDP’s Oborevwori in the elections as governor of the state and therefore struck out the petition of the candidate of the APC, Omo-Agege for lack of merit.

In a statement titled, “Delta State Governorship Election Tribunal's Judgement: An Appeal For Calm, As We Continue To Pursue Our Case And Cause,” personally signed by Ovie Omo-Agege, and obtained by SaharaReporters, noted that the tribunal’s outcome was not what they expected.

"Let it be said with every sense of conviction and responsibility that in reaching its judgment, the Tribunal in Asaba, in our respectful view, failed to avert its mind to the intendment of the plethora of unambiguous innovations now contained in the Electoral Act, 2022. In relation to the instant petition, these are most particularly evident in sections 137 and 73(2) and paragraph 46(4) [First Schedule) of the Act mandating the Tribunal on how to properly handle the required evidence duly placed before it by the petitioners in proof of the petition and corroborated by INEC itself.

29/09/2023

There are indications that Nigerians will experience nationwide blackout and fuel scarcity in the coming days as the National Union of Electricity Employees, NUEE, and the Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas, NUPENG, have commenced mobilization in compliance with the planned indefinite strike declared by organized labour unions.

Dominic Igwebike, NUEE’s acting general secretary, urged members to stop work from the early hours of Tuesday.

The NUEE’s call on its members to join the planned indefinite strike comes on the heels of a similar call by NUPENG on its members to withdraw their services, raising fears of possible fuel scarcity across the country.

The development comes as the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and Trade Union Congress, TUC, declared an indefinite nationwide strike to pressure the government to address the hardships associated with the removal of fuel subsidy.

The NUEE members’ strike could throw the country into darkness, given the workers’ critical roles in electricity distribution in the country.

DAILY POST recalls that the country experienced a total blackout during the NLC two-day warning strike on September 5th and 6th.

On Tuesday, the TUC and the NLC announced the decision to embark on an indefinite strike from 3 October over the prevailing hardship due to the removal of subsidy on petrol.

Meanwhile, DAILY POST reports that, in a last minute move to avert the indefinite strike, the Federal Government, through the Minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Bako Lalong, on Friday invited organized labour for talks.

28/09/2023

The leadership of the Labour Party on Wednesday threw its weight behind the planned industrial action of the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress, saying the presidency has been insensitive to the plight of Nigerian workers.

The development is coming in the wake of organised Labour’s resolve to ground activities nationwide from October 3 following the failure of the government to successfully implement policies to alleviate the sufferings of the masses after the removal of fuel subsidy.

After the 21-day ultimatum given by the NLC lapsed last week, the NLC National President, Joe Ajaero, had lamented that none of the demands put before the Federal Government was addressed.

Among other things, the NLC and the TUC are asking for wage awards, implementation of palliatives, tax exemptions and allowances to public sector workers and a review of the minimum wage.

Reacting to the proposed strike in a statement titled ‘Workers strike: Labour Party identifies with Nigerian workers’ on Wednesday, National Publicity Secretary of LP, Obiora Ifoh, bemoaned that Nigerian workers have shown enough patience and understanding.

While charging supporters of the party to stock up on food, Ifoh warned that the leadership of LP will support any legitimate means to demand better welfare for Nigerian workers.

He said, “We have followed with keen interest, in the last four months, various meetings between Organised Labour and various government bodies including the president of the Senate, the presidency and the ministers of Labour as well as all the efforts made by the Labour leadership to get the government to understand the magnitude of sufferings its policies have thrown Nigerian workers into since the enthronement of this administration.

“We are not in any way surprised at the government’s apparent indifference, insensitivity, intransigence, and recalcitrant posture towards the genuine demands of the Labour bodies because their usurpation of power was not sanctioned by both the workers and generality of Nigerians.

25/07/2023

Counsel for some protesters, Mr Adesina Ogunlana, has questioned the N61m budgeted by the Lagos State Government for the mass burial of 103 corpses recovered in the wake of the October 2020 protest.

The state government had on Sunday confirmed the authenticity of a leaked letter indicating planned mass burial for 103 corpses.

The letter, dated July 19, 2023, emanated from the Lagos State Public Procurement Agency and was addressed to the Lagos State Ministry of Health.

The letter, signed by the Director-General of the Lagos State Public Procurement Agency, Mr Onafowote Idowu, revealed the approval of the sum of N61,285,000 for the mass burial of 103 corpses.

But Ogunlana, who represented some protesters who claimed to have either been shot or witnessed soldiers shooting protesters at the Lekki tollgate on October 20, 2020, expressed dismay at the sum budgeted to give mass burial to unclaimed bodies.

The activist-lawyer said, “My concern is not about the people that died but the fact that somebody is saying he wants to carry out a mass burial with N61m – the mass burial of unidentified bodies, of degraded bodies that died about two years ago, roughly about 20 or 19 months ago.

“You want to use N61m for mass burial! It should not even be up to N1m. Is it not just digging a big grave and putting the bodies there? That shows you the exploitation of the ruling class that we have, who are telling the people to bear the pain and to bear with the government.”

Former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, has called on the Department of State Services, DSS, to apologise to Nigerians over the case of Godwin Emefiele, suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN.

Ezekwesili said DSS took Nigerians for a ride over the charges leveled against Emefiele.

She wondered why the secret police would charge Emefiele for illegal possession of fi****ms.

Tweeting, the former minister said despite the damages of the monetary policies, DSS only charged Emefiele for illegal possession of fi****ms.

According to Ezekwesili: “ must immediately apologize to Nigerians for daring to take citizens for a ride on this Emefiele’s court case. Imagine.

“So after all the monetary policy damage his boss and the former

committed against the Nigerian economy and people, it is for “illegal possession of fi****ms” that State Security charged him to court. Nonsense.”

The Presidential Election Petition Court has adjourned to Thursday, May 11, 2023, the continuation of the pre-hearing of the petition by the Peoples Democratic Party and its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, against the president-elect, Bola Tinubu of the All Progressive Congress.

In the petition marked CA/PEPC/05/2023, the PDP and Atiku are challenging the declaration of Tinubu as the President-elect by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Listed as 1st to 3rd respondents in the petition are the Independent National Electoral Commission, Bola Tinubu, and the APC, respectively.

During Tuesday’s proceedings, counsel for the petitioners, Chris Uche SAN, pointed out that they have filed and served a motion dated 7th May requesting a live broadcast of the presidential tribunal proceeding.

He noted that the application was a motion of priority which requires immediate attention given the national importance of the issue at hand.

“We urge your Lordship to set it down for hearing and adoption as soon as the court’s business may allow.”

Responding, counsel for INEC, A.B Mahmoud acknowledged the application which he described as “innocuous” and requested time to respond “being served yesterday.”

On his part, counsel for the 2nd respondent, Lateef Fagbemi said they received the application and “we are taking steps to respond appropriately to the application.”

12/04/2023

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday nullified the ward and local government congresses purportedly conducted on February 7 by the All Progressives Congress in Kogi State for the nomination of a governorship candidate for the November governorship poll.

The court set aside the congress on the ground that they were not conducted in compliance with the Electoral Act 2022 and the APC Constitution.

The suit was instituted by a group of aggrieved APC members led by Realwan Okpanachi.

Plaintiffs in the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/329/2023 are Rilwan Okpanachi, Yahaya Saidu Nuhu, Omaonu Clement Arome, Mustapha Ibrahim Idoko, Aku Umar Goodman and Abu Steven Okpanachi Onechiojo, while APC and INEC are 1st and 2nd defendants respectfully.

Counsel to the plaintiffs, Ogwu Onoja, SAN, argued that the APC breached section 84 of the Electoral Act and section 13 of its constitution by concocting a purported list of delegates and submitting the same to the Independent National Electoral Commission without the knowledge of registered members of the party in the state.

Delivering Judgement, Justice James Omotosho barred the INEC from recognising or using the delegates list that emerged from the congresses to select its governorship standard bearer.

He agreed with the plaintiffs that the APC in Kogi State failed to conduct ward and local government congresses as stipulated by relevant provisions of the law.

He dismissed the preliminary objections raised by APC that the court has no jurisdiction to entertain the suit and warned that the APC must conduct its affairs by the laws, adding that impunity as exhibited in the instant case will lead to anarchy.

The Justice ordered the APC leadership to conduct fresh nominations that would comply with section 84 of the Electoral Act, 2022, and section 13 of the party’s constitution.

The judge held that during the trial of the case, the APC failed to disclose the venues and times where the purported ward and local government congresses were held and also failed to report to the INEC officials that purportedly monitored the elections.

12/04/2023

The All Progressives Congress, APC, on Wednesday, prayed the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal to dismiss the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP’s petition challenging the election of the President-elect, Bola Tinubu.

APC urged the tribunal to reject the petition in its notice of preliminary objection marked: CA/PEPC/A/05/2023, NAN reports.

It noted that the tribunal lacked the jurisdiction to adjudicate on PDP’s petition against Tinubu’s election.

Stressing that the claims of non-compliance must be proven on a polling unit basis, APC said PDP failed to provide the particulars of polling units where electoral fraud was perpetrated.

“The petition as presently constituted is devoid of necessary particulars to support allegations of corrupt practices, violence and non-compliance with provisions of the Electoral Act.

“Paragraph 35 of the petition is not relevant or cognizable and 84 is vague as no specific figure or polling units are pleaded as the margin of lead to be countered by the respondent,” the APC said.

The party urged the tribunal to strike out or dismiss PDP’s petition for lacking merit.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, had declared Tinubu the winner of the last presidential election after polling the highest number of votes.

Aggrieved by the announcement, PDP headed to the election tribunal to contest the election outcome.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has complied with the directive of the Governorship and House of Assembly Petition Tribunal in Ogun State to allow the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) have access to all election materials used for the conduct of the recently held election in the state.

NNPP had earlier approached the tribunal over the failure of INEC to include its name in the ballot papers used for the election.

The tribunal granted the request a few days ago, prompting INEC to release the election materials to the NNPP counsels, Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo and Izunya Isaac Dale, for inspection.

INEC allowed the party to photocopy, scan, pay for and obtain certified true copies of all the documents used in the conduct of the governorship election.
