Co***ne, often recognized for its dangerous reputation, also serves as a legal local anesthetic in surgeries. In a groundbreaking development, scientists in China have genetically modified a to***co plant to produce co***ne in its leaves.

Sheng-Xiong Huang, a plant chemist at the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Kunming Institute of Botany, highlights the challenge of unraveling the coca plant’s co***ne biosynthesis, a question pursued by researchers for over a century. To decode this process, the team reverse-engineered co***ne by manipulating the genes of a related plant, to***co.

Motivated by scientific curiosity, Huang and his team used Nicotiana benthamiana, a relative of the to***co plant native to Australia, to experiment with gene insertion. This species was chosen for its genetic malleability, similar to how a Canadian company used it to develop a COVID-19 vaccine. The researchers identified key genes responsible for co***ne production and inserted them into N. benthamiana, resulting in a small amount of co***ne.

Despite this breakthrough, mass production of co***ne using to***co plants is unlikely. Huang notes that the method yields minimal co***ne, and the genetic ability does not carry over to the plant’s next generation. For practical purposes, producing co***ne through a yeast strain might be more feasible in the future.

This research also opens possibilities for developing less addictive co***ne variants that retain their medicinal anesthetic properties, potentially benefiting medical applications.

A woman accused of setting two Gwinnett homes on fire on June 1 has been arrested.

After almost a week on the run, Hong T. Huynh, 61, was found in Dunwoody and taken into custody yesterday. She’s being held without bond.

Ten people were displaced, including two children, between the two fires. One adult male resident was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries.

Investigators say they determined both fires were “set intentionally and were connected,” but did not explain why the homes were targeted.
