Klamath History.

WHAT’S IN A NAME, No. 89 – Klamath Falls

Like “Oregon,” the origin of the name “Klamath” remains shrouded in mystery, much as the hills in our photo are shrouded in fog.

Considering that Klamath is the moniker for our county and its largest city, as well as numerous schools, businesses, government agencies, clubs and organizations, we’ve saved this name as the last for our “What’s In A Name” series.

While it’s common knowledge the name applies to a Native American tribe, it’s less well known that “Klamath” is not how the Indigenous people of the area referred to themselves.

In her 1941 book “History of Klamath County,” Rachel Applegate Good noted the Klamath Indians did not apply the name to themselves. It originated as a name used by others in reference to the Indigenous people of the Upper Klamath Basin and, at times, the lower Klamath River watershed in California.

The Indigenous people of the Upper Klamath Basin referred to themselves as “mukluks,” a general term meaning “people.” By the time they signed a treaty with the U.S. government in 1864, they had adopted the name Klamath.

But the name isn’t confined to just Oregon. Several years before Oregon entered the Union in 1859, the northwest corner of the state of California was identified as Klamath County. The county was discontinued in 1874, with the land being divided between Siskiyou and Humboldt counties.

Klamath County, Oregon, was not established until 1882. Linkville officially became Klamath Falls in 1893.

The name Klamath was also applied to mountains in the Coast Ranges of Southern Oregon and Northern California. A small town at the mouth of the Klamath River in California is named Klamath.

Among the earliest uses of the name Klamath are those appearing in the journal of Peter Skene Ogden, who explored the Upper Klamath Basin in 1826. He referred to the Indigenous people of the area as the Clammitte. Spellings of the name varied in Ogden’s journal, as well as in later sources. John C. Fremont, who explored parts of the Upper Klamath Basin in 1843 and 1846, wrote the name as Tlamath.

So, the question is, where did Ogden learn the name?

Good, in her book, referenced a theory put forward in 1910 by T.C. Elliott. Writing for the Quarterly Journal of the Oregon Historical Society, Elliott offered, “A suggestion, not yet a conclusion, as to the name
”

Elliott’s suggestion was that Klamath, like many other place names in the Pacific Northwest, might have originated with French-Canadian trappers and traders, who could have used the French term “clair-metis” – meaning “a light mist or cloud” – to describe conditions in the area.

As far as we know, Elliott’s suggestion has been neither substantiated nor disproven. Online translations did not provide much help.

Good, daughter of the prominent local historical figure Capt. Oliver Cromwell Applegate, wrote that the French-Canadian theory was favored by her father. Her conclusion: “Whether or not this theory is correct, I doubt if anyone who has stood on a hilltop and has seen the morning mists rising in the valley, illuminated by the early rays of the sun, will question that ‘the land of light fog’ is a most appropriate and beautiful name for the Klamath country.”

Regarding the word “Falls” in Klamath Falls, we remind our Facebook followers that we examined that matter in a previous post. The falls on Link River referred not to a single plunging waterfall, but the fall of the river over a certain distance that allowed water-powered industry to take root along the stream.

Here’s the link to our earlier post about “Falls”:

Showcase #3 is this Thursday, February 1st at 6pm at Mia & Pia's Pizzeria & Brewhouse! Performing are: The 3 G's and Ron Collins. :)

Approximate Set Times:
The 3 G's: 6pm
Ron Collins: 7pm

All ages welcome. FREE admission. Tips to support the artists appreciated.
----------
THE 3 G's:
Dave and Ginger Gardner have played music and sung together for about 20 years. Having been members of different groups performing at local county fairs, parks, and church organizations, the couple passed such artistic loves down to their granddaughter, Mikayla, who now partners in their efforts. A family affair, “The 3 G’s” name represents the group’s individual members: Grandpa, Grandma, and Granddaughter. The 3 G’s are best known for their collaborative vocal harmonies and upbeat Americana meets gospel style of music.

RON COLLINS:

Ron Colllins’ goal is to bring joy, reflection, and laughter to audiences of any size. A native of Klamath Falls, born and raised, Ron’s love of music began at an early age with his introduction to the gospel genre as a child. Afforded the opportunity to sing solos in church settings as an adolescent, Ron would go on to eventually serve in a worship leader role. As a young man, Collins was honored to record publisher demos for both himself and other songwriters. His catalog of original music is varied, echoing his personal life’s journey. With a welcome wit and a playful heart, a Ron Collins performance invites the listener to share a laugh with friends while delivering the craft and storytelling of a seasoned creative.
