Blues Roots Podcast – Halloween Special!
Several centuries ago in Ireland, lived a drunkard known as Stingy Jack. He was known throughout the land as a deceiver and manipulator. Satan overheard the tale of Jack's evil deeds and silver tongue. Unconvinced (and envious) of the rumours, the devil went to find out for himself whether or not Jack lived up to his vile reputation.
On one fateful night, as Jack was making his way home from another drunken night in the pub, he met Satan standing by the gate of the old orchard. Jack fearing that Satan had come to claim his soul, he asked Satan if he might fetch him an apple as he was starving. The devil seeing no reason why he shouldn’t agree to his request, he quickly climbed a tree and selected a large, juicy apple for Jack.
But Jack had tricked the Prince of Darkness, he had placed a number of crucifixes around the base of the tree, trapping the Devil.
Jack struck a deal with Satan, The Devil agreed never to take Jack’s soul if he would be set free to return to hell.
jack lived a life of drunken debauchery - stealing, lying and cheating until one day, his end came and death claimed him. Jack standing outside the pearly-gates was denied entry to Heaven because of his sinful ways and was turned away by god.
Jack made his way to the underworld, only to be refused entry by Satan himself, who had remembered his bargain never to take Jack’s soul, instead, the Devil sent Jack back to wander the earth for eternity, with only a coal from the fires of hell, placed inside a hollowed-out pumpkin….
Happy Halloween.
