Have you ever thought about what fuels your passion for "public health"? Co-chairs of the Policy Caucus of the Oklahoma Public Health Association (OPHA), McKenzie Cowlbeck and Stephanie Mansour, hadn't until they sat down for this interview. Ironically, they are among the few who didn't stumble into the policy field by accident. Join us as two dedicated public health advocates discuss their public health origin stories, what public health means to them, and how they're helping put OPHA back on the map. More full-term pregnancies = more women taking leave or quitting their jobs entirely. That has an impact on the economy.

Institute for Women's Policy Research crunched the numbers, and they estimate Oklahoma's abortion ban is costing the state's economy over $2.3 billion a year 😳

An unprecedented demographic shift is coming. And Oklahoma Human Services has a plan to make sure Oklahoma is ready for it.

Last week, the state agency launched "Aging Our Way Oklahoma," a 10-year roadmap for ensuring the state has the workforce and infrastructure to support its growing number of elders. 👵💞

It's a big deal for women's health enthusiasts like us (and you). Women are overrepresented in the state's older population + the unpaid caregivers and workforce that serve them.

A take so hot its author wrote a whole book about it🔥

In "Holding It Together: How Women Became America's Safety Net," sociologist Jessica Calarco draws on historical examples and 400+ hours of interviews to show how America's social safety net is built on the exploitation of women's labor.

2022 data is in, and Oklahoma fell from having the 4th- to the 5th-highest teen pregnancy rate in the nation.

According to our partners at Amplify Tulsa, we have increased youth access to education and resources, health care services, and free or low-cost contraception to thank. Learn more in our weekly women's health bulletin: metriarchok.org/fierce-facts

Sure, policies to advance women's health were left on the budget meeting room floor while other more ~extravagant~ line items were approved.

But who's counting?

Period OKC that's who. Check out these stats because, brunch friends 💅, Period OKC always shows up with the receipts to show how period poverty affects menstruating people in Oklahoma.

85% of our partners that we surveyed stated they didn't have the ability to budget for period products. This includes various nonprofits and schools, which means that Period Poverty is systemic in nature. 22,100 Cycles assisted is a great start but we need to speak up to our institutions we hold dear to start thinking about Period Poverty when budgeting!

14/05/2024

Ending period poverty is simple. Just get products into the hands of those who need them, duh. After starting Period OKC , Linley Faye Smith is now taking that message to the in the Capitol. Her message: "Periods aren't gross. They're normal. Let's not make it weird. If people didn't think it was weird, it wouldn't be so complicated when it comes to funding." She is really good at one-liners. 🩸 Full episode on Apple, Spotify, and metriarchok.org/pod

Y'know what would be a *really* cool Mother's Day gift? Equal representation in the legislature 💐

Nearly 33% of state legislators are women – that’s 5X more than in 1971. But child care, money, and time still keep many from running, especially when pregnant or raising young children.

Here's a snapshot of how Oklahoma's doing, courtesy of data + analysis from Vote Mama

The Commonwealth Fund's 2024 State Health Disparities Report placed Oklahoma in the bottom three when it comes to health and health care.

And while all racial and ethnic groups ranked poorly when compared to other states, Black and Native American Oklahomans fared the worst.

It’s the last day of Black Maternal Health Week! 📅

As comes to a close we're highlighting Oklahoma's stats. 📈 Black women in our state (and across the US) continue to have higher rates of maternal mortality, maternal morbidity, and birth trauma than their peers.

Here's a snapshot of how social determinants of health impact births in OK. And one resource for "disrupting" the pathway that leads to negative outcomes.

Data nerds, this one's for you. 🤓📊

For the first time since the late ‘90s, the federal gov is updating how folks indicate their racial/ethnic identity on the Census and beyond.

Starting in 2030, race and ethnicity will be lumped together in a single question with a couple more options. And say goodbye to "two or more races" — respondents will be able to select multiple. ☑️☑️☑️

Doula access... let me count the ways

What's one way to improve maternal health outcomes? According to Omare Jimmerson, it's community doulas and a fiercely passionate team (and probably a couple of calming breaths). Omare and the Tulsa Birth Equity Initiative have long espoused the benefits of community doulas, and last year they achieved a milestone many had only hoped for: SoonerCare coverage for doula services. (party fog horn noise). Listen in to find out what a doula is and learn all about the initiatives underway by TBEI to improve maternal health in Tulsa (and hopefully throughout all of Oklahoma).

Hot off the press! 🗞️ Dr. Dana Stone, an OKC-area OB-GYN, shares her thoughts on a bill being considered by the state legislature.

In an op-ed for The Oklahoman, Dr. Stone outlines how HB 3013 – which would bar providers from using “abortion-inducing drugs” and establish legal personhood “from the moment of conception" – could impact healthcare, from IVF to arthritis.
