Thongdrel Chenmo of Zhabdrung Sungjoen at Talakha Gonpa 🙏🍀

Talakha Gonpa, also known as Talakha Monastery, is a Buddhist monastery located in the Thimphu District of Bhutan. Situated at an elevation of approximately 3,080 meters (10,105 feet), it offers stunning panoramic views of the Thimphu Valley and the surrounding mountain ranges. The monastery is a site of spiritual and cultural significance, often visited by both locals and tourists.

Talakha Gonpa is affiliated with the Drukpa Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism, which is one of the major sects in Bhutan. The monastery serves as a place for religious study and meditation for monks and is an important center for the practice of Buddhist rituals and ceremonies.

The journey to Talakha Gonpa is a rewarding experience for trekkers and pilgrims alike. The trail to the monastery typically starts from the Simtokha, Babesa or Chamgang winding through dense forests of pine and rhododendron. Along the way, hikers can enjoy the rich biodiversity and scenic beauty of the region, including views of terraced fields and traditional Bhutanese houses.

Historically, Talakha Gonpa has been a retreat for meditation and a sanctuary for monks seeking solitude. It is also a place where significant Buddhist festivals and rituals are held, drawing participants from across Bhutan. The Buddha Dordenma is a monumental statue located in the mountainous kingdom of Bhutan, in the capital city of Thimphu. This statue is one of the largest Buddhas in the world, standing at a height of 54 meters (177 feet). It was completed in 2015 and is constructed of bronze and gilded in gold.

Situated atop a hill in Kuenselphodrang Nature Park, the statue overlooks the southern entrance to Thimphu Valley, providing a spectacular view of the city and the surrounding mountains. The site is not only a prominent landmark but also a place of great spiritual significance.

Inside the Buddha Dordenma, there are 125,000 smaller Buddha statues, each made of bronze and also gilded in gold. The statue houses a meditation hall and several chapels, making it a focal point for both religious activities and tourism. The construction of the Buddha Dordenma was initiated to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the fourth king of Bhutan, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, and to fulfill two ancient prophecies: one by the yogi Sonam Zangpo, who foretold the construction of a large Buddha statue in the region, and another by Guru Padmasambhava in the 8th century.

The Buddha Dordenma symbolizes Bhutan's commitment to the promotion of peace and happiness. The serene and grandiose presence of the statue is a reminder of Bhutan's deep-rooted Buddhist heritage and its ongoing efforts to preserve and promote its unique cultural identity.

*Royal Takin Preserve, located in the Motithang, Thimphu, Bhutan, is a wildlife reserve area for the Bhutan takin, the national animal of Bhutan.

*The takin was declared the national animal of Bhutan on 25 November 2005. This designation is attributed to a legend of the animal’s creation in Bhutan in the 15th century by Lama Drukpa Kunley.

* The Royal Takin Preserve is open to all visitors from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm BST, with an entrance fee of Nu. 50 per person for adult Bhutanese and Nu.300 per person for foreign visitor.

*Visitors can enjoy viewing various wild animals, including the national animal of Bhutan.
