POLICE ARREST TWO INDIVIDUALS FOR ALLEGED THEFT

Date: April 5, 2024

The Gambia Police Force has arrested two individuals in connection with an alleged theft at the J Financial Services (J. FIN) Sukuta Branch, on Thursday, March 28, 2024.

The incident was reported to Sukuta Police Station by Sally Gaye, a cashier at the branch, calming the disappearance of D170,350.

Preliminary investigations revealed a surprising twist: Sally Gaye, the initial complainant, was found to be complicit in the theft. Evidence uncovered during the investigation indicated that Gaye had colluded with Muhammed Gomez, recruiting him to stage the theft in a manner that would suggest a robbery. This elaborate scheme aimed to divert suspicion away from themselves. However, diligent investigative efforts exposed that the reported stolen amount of D170,350 was, in fact, appropriated by Gaye with Gomez's assistance.

In light of these revelations, the police acted swiftly, arresting Sally Gaye and Muhammed Gomez for their alleged involvement in organising the theft. Both suspects are currently under police custody, cooperating with the ongoing investigation.

The police are committed to conducting a comprehensive probe to ensure justice is served.

PRESS RELEASE: The 2024 GAMBIA POPULATION AND HOUSING CENSUS

The slogan: “Everyone Counts, Get Counted”
The Gambia is finally set to conduct a digital population and housing census for the first time from May 25 to June 14, 2024. The 2024 Population and Housing Census (PHC) will be implemented by The Gambia Bureau of Statistics (GBoS) in collaboration with all relevant government stakeholders and development partners.

Financial and technical support for the conduct of the census is provided by the government of the Gambia, the World Bank, United Nations Population Fund, and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA). A Population and Housing Census is conducted every 10 years in The Gambia. The last population and housing census was conducted in April 2013.

The main objective of conducting the 2024 population and housing census is to provide statistics on the population’s demographic, social and economic characteristics and household and housing characteristics. This information helps Central and Local Governments to plan for various social services such as education, health, housing, sanitation, and others.

The information that will be derived from the census will also help the private sector, including businesses to plan their activities, which will be of benefit to the economic development of this country. The 2024 PHC will also respond to the data needs of the National Development Plan (2023-2027) and provide data for monitoring continental (Africa Union Agenda 2063) and the Global agendas (Agenda 2030).

The Gambia Bureau of Statistics (GBoS) has conducted a pilot census at selected districts of each region from March 5th to March 24, 2024 to test the adequacy and efficiency of the overall census process. The pilot census will provide information needed to better understand the potential challenges and obstacles in successfully conducting the census, thus ensuring high-quality collected information.

All persons who spend the census night in the Gambia will be counted. This includes all persons who spent the night in a household, all persons who spend the census night in an institution (Group Quarters) and all outdoor sleepers and those in transit in the Gambia (floating population) on census night.
During the actual census, field workers will visit households from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm, and can be identified by census Identification Cards (IDs), T-shirts/caps/uniforms and protective clothing carrying the GBoS logo.

Recruitment for the census field officers will be done online. All interested applicants will be required to apply online when GBoS deploys the registration system. The public will be informed when the system is set/ready to receive the applications.

The population and housing census is an enormous national exercise involving everybody in the Gambia. The general public is therefore duly requested to cooperate during data collection.

The Gambia Government Announces Verdict on West African Aquaculture Limited vs. The Gambia

The Gambia Government announces the verdict delivered by the Paris-based International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) on the legal case between the West African Aquaculture Limited (WAA) and The Gambia. The legal matter involves the expropriation of Mr. and Ms. Hansson, WAA Shrimp Farming business in the West Coast villages of Pirang and Sanyang by former President, Yahya Jammeh on 3rd June, 2015.

However, in the wake of the change of Government in 2017 followed by unsuccessful negotiations, the WAA’s proprietors referred the matter to the ICSID for arbitration. After almost six (6) years of deliberations, the tribunal ruled that former President Jammeh’s actions were unlawful and ordered The Gambia Government to compensate WAA, the sum of Eight Million, Seven Hundred Thousand, Two Hundred and Thirty-Three British Pound Sterling (£8, 700, 233.00) for damages. In addition, an 8% interest on the said sum compounded annually from 3rd June, 2015 to the date of payment plus cost and legal fees. The total award stands at more than Twenty Million British Pounds Sterling (£20 million).

Crucially, this case exposes the consequences of former President Jammeh’s reckless disregard for the Rule of Law and his temperamental and arbitrary decisions that continue to negatively haunt the current administration. In light of this development, The Gambia Government is considering various options including, but not limited to appealing the tribunal’s decision.

Significantly, the Barrow Government is still paying damages for similar cases awarded by international tribunals against the Government among them, ALIMANTA S.A., former operators of The Gambia Groundnut Corporation whose foreign management were arbitrarily arrested and expelled by Mr. Yahya Jammeh in 1998.

As the Government acknowledges these colossal financial losses, President Adama Barrow, determined to guard against executive overreach particularly as they relate to operations of international businesses in The Gambia, reminds Government officials and Agencies to be always guarded by good faith, restraint and respect for the due process in the ex*****on of their official duties.

21/02/2024

Mr OUsainou ANM Darboe’s comments are baseless and Antagonistic—- Seedy S.K Njie.

My fellow citizens,

My style of politics has always been underpinned by respect, maturity and restraint. It has always been my view that the better and more serious politician is the one who puts across his views without being over-zealous or unmannerly. I plan on always living by this principle. Yet, I want to address UDP leader Ousainou Darboe’s attack on my person and our security forces here.

It is dishonesty and plain pretense for anyone to suggest that there is no democracy and respect for rule of law in The Gambia. Any honest, truthful, right-thinking and God-fearing Gambian will accept and appreciate the democracy and rule of law reality in The Gambia. To keep repeating that, one would be living a life of idleness.

To put it out there, I would have been one of Mr Darboe’s most celebrated men if I had accepted his invitation to join UDP. But after I declined his invitation, he settled on the only other choice: to antagonize me.

In his statement, he wrote that “since the appointment of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly in 2022, the APRC politics of weaponisation of State institutions have made a comeback”. This statement is false and unfortunate. It is fact Mr Darboe weaponised the institutions of state when he was foreign minister and vice president. He was the most powerful man in the Barrow government and presided over the worst clampdown on both perceived and real political opponents. I was in 2018 arrested and detained on the orders of Mr Darboe. It was his nephew, Muhammed Kanteh, who is a senior member of the UDP and National Assembly Member who arrested me. Appointment to positions of authority or influence both local and foreign service by his recommendations were mainly based on political, friendship, family and or tribal inclination at the expense of competence and loyalty to state. No wonder, Gambians started enjoying the fruits of good governance and unprecedented development after you were yanked out of it. Denial of permits to legally registered political parties for meetings and rallies was the order of the day when Mr Darboe was in charge of government. It was during his time APRC supporters were tear-gassed and a siege was laid to their leader’s home in Tallinding. Their leaders and members were routinely arrested , detained and charged and all these became history after Mr Darboe ceased to be a member of the government. But also, do not forget his threat against Gambian teachers, members of the security forces with dismissals. Alhamdoullillah, I have NEVER been involved in the arrest, detention and dismissal of any Gambian throughout. Any person with evidence of my involvement in the arrest, detention and dismissal of anybody is invited to come forward. I find it funny that Mr Darboe who championed the plan to ban APRC while he was in government in 2017, 2018 and 2019 is the one defending and fighting for a faction of the same APRC. It should be our collective responsibility to our constituents and country not to render it ungovernable.

As old as he is, Mr Darboe is stale and past it. There is life after politics and at his age, it would be rewarding for him to embrace a life of hermitism in a religious committee with a rosary in his hand not divisive politics. And since he is next in line to be Dobo’s next Caliph General, that time cannot be more urgent.

For our security forces, I ask that Mr ANM Darboe you stop bullying these fine men and women who are working day and night to keep you and I safe. If you cannot thank them for their service, you should not try to put them in harm’s way.

For us, our view is that the government should be and is inclusive of all citizens irrespective of party, religious and regional affiliations. We have a country to build and I will not let my grandpa Ousainou ANM Darboe distract me. A man will never be what God has not made him.
