“I’ve had days during this whole lockdown of not really doing anything at all. I think, sometimes, we put a bit too much pressure on ourselves to be productive and be able to tick things off all the time. ⁣

If you’ve having days where you don’t feel like doing much or you just want to just relax then that’s absolutely fine too. But if you feel like doing something creative and productive or taking a look at that list that you’ve created and start ticking things off it’s such an amazing thing and getting the ball rolling is the hardest part. To actually start doing these things because once you start doing them and feel the benefits of them, wether it’s, you want to start painting and you feel the benefit of being creative and kind of switching off from the world for that period of time. Or you want to plant a vegetable patch and you feel the benefits of spending time outside.”⁣ 🌱

In episode nine we chat about ways to nourish the soul during lockdown. As Meg says, pending time resting or being creative and productive are wonderful ways to spend this time we have been gifted. Listen to the full episode available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and everywhere you find podcasts 🎧

It’s is Mother’s Day in some parts of the world today 🌸 A day to celebrate the mamas and mother figures in all of our lives ~ did you know that humans are not the only ones that have a very strong bond with their mothers? Orangutan 🦧 babies stay with their mothers for the first eight years and are especially dependent upon her during the first few years to feed and carry them. Orangutans learn how to read and navigate the rainforest from their mothers and it is certainly a special relationship 🌼⁣

Happy Mother’s Day! ⁣

In episode eight we explore the power of writing and how intuitive writing can help in healing and calming the mind ✨⁣

Both hosts are writers as well as conservationists and are very passionate about this topic - they have both found writing to be a simple yet hugely beneficial tool. Intuitive writing is a way of giving yourself permission to be creative.⁣

We know at first it might feel awkward or embarrassing to sit with yourself and write down whatever is on your mind but this practice is for you and only you. You cannot fail because you are succeeding just by doing it 🌱

I will say that this moment in time definitely reminds me of a few places where I have lived. When I working in the Solomon Islands and Sulawesi, a big island in Indonesia, before I went we actually had to go through a bunch of interviews and medical exams and things like that and one of the levels of interview questioning we had was “how are you going to go in this remote location? You’re going to be away from your friends and family and your support network? You’re going to be in a place where you don’t speak the language necessarily. You’re maybe not going to have ready access to internet” and all of that. “What are you going to do to pass the time?” ⁣

And we had to give them real answers and really come up with “well how am I going to pass the time?” ⁣

Episode nine is filled with reflections about the current lockdown and past experiences that Meg and Morgan have had living in remote locations. They also reflect on the importance of rest during this time as well as the invitation for creative expression that this quiet time has given us 🌱

The seasons are changing 🍂 as summer slides into spring in the Southern Hemisphere, winter is melting into spring in the north. Is there any other way that nature puts on such a dramatic show than with the autumn leaves? Trees bursting into a pallet of yellow, tangerine, wine and green. If you are able right now, go outside and gaze at the trees, pick a leaf and admire the complex depth of colour within 🍁

In this very strange moment in time, many of us are confined to our houses and isolated.⁣

During the lockdown, Meg and Morgan want to share their personal reflections based on their own experiences working and living in remote locations around the world. In particular, ways to cultivate creativity and reconnect to our earth during this time, while also embracing the invitation to rest.⁣

Time is often the one commodity that we don't have enough of, and suddenly we have the gift of unlimited time. We hope that wherever you are in the world, that you are sprinkling seeds of creativity during these changing times.⁣

As always, please feel free to continue the conversation with us ☀️

“I found it really healthy for me to unfollow a lot of different accounts on Instagram. I I felt really bad about it at the time and I felt like a bad person for doing it because a lot of these accounts I was unfollowing were conservation accounts, conservation organisations and not for profits. But I just couldn’t cope with scrolling through Instagram and every second photo I saw was the rainforest on fire, or a dead orangutan, or a dead rhino or a dead elephant. It just seemed as though I was absorbing and consuming tragedy all the time. And I don’t need to see a dead orangutan on an Instagram account to be motivated to make change I’ve seen that in person. You know? I don’t need to see a dead rhino I’ve been at poaching sites. I’ve seen that in person and it just felt too much.” ⁣

Episode six focuses on empathy burnout in conservation. This is a topic very close to our hearts and something that we want to raise more awareness about. What are your thoughts? Have you experienced something similar?

Baby rhino 🦏 crying for milk sound like whales? 🐋 🤔

On podcast episode five, we reflect on our first ever wildlife conservation 🌱encounters. We both found it really funny to remember the cry that orphan rhinos give when they are ready for milk. We dropped a sound bite into the episode, so have a listen if you feel called.

Morgan just unearthed this clip of the whales above water 🐋 sound that rhino make from her time in South Africa.

What do you think? Are rhinos 🦏 secretly whales 🐋 on land? 😆

We truly believe that there is so much hope for our earth and our future. We open our latest episode discussing our hope for this new year and new decade, and how we believe that this is a moment of change as more people become aware of the environment and the small steps that they can take to make a difference 🌱

Empathy burnout 💔 ⁣

For episode six we wanted to start a conversation around empathy burnout. This issue is all too common in conservation but sadly is not often talked about. Empathy burnout, compassion fatigue and eco anxiety 🌱 also affect people who are do not work in the environmental sphere.⁣

We are all about staying positive and hopeful, but it’s not hard to feel overwhelmed some days when you look at all of the damage being done to our beautiful earth 🌏 ⁣

In the light of the devastating fires 🔥 ravaging Australia, we decided to bump this topic up the list and record an episode sharing our personal experiences and the self care practices 🙏 we have in place to navigate burnout.⁣

This is a really personal photo to share but it is when I (Morgan) was in the midst of burn out in 2016 in Mozambique. I spent a lot of time sleeping on this day bed and drinking rooibos + coconut milk tea (our version of pizza + Netflix). 💛⁣

Have you tuned in to listen to our fourth episode yet? 📻

Meg + I are beginning to prepare for our next episode, a journey back to our favourite conservation memories.

Moments that made us laugh, made all of the sleepless nights worth it or simply make us smile to look back on.

This going to be such a special episode sharing and reflecting and giving you more of an in-depth look into our lives.

Already my mind is cast back to the steamy jungle of Bolivia, where I first fell in love with wildlife rescue and rehabilitation in 2013. I spent almost two months at a sanctuary that takes in animals who have been saved from the exotic animal black market. At La Senda Verde these animals had a forever home and it was a privilege to spend time caring for the various monkeys, birds and bears that had been rescued.

Stay tuned for our next episode 🥰

Have you listened to our new podcast episode: eco friendly festivities yet? We discuss ways we can reduce our impact while celebrating. One of the talking points was wrapping paper- which often isn’t recyclable.
Here’s some wrapping inspiration for you. This year when wrapping gifts why not use recycled brown paper, old newspaper/ magazines, old fabric... one of our friends suggested using old maps as wrapping too - super cool idea!! This is an easy switch that will reduce your impact on the environment 💚 How will you be wrapping presents this year? 😍🎄🎁 (Photos from Pinterest)

Powerful & inspiring. We mention the story of Jadav Payeng, known as the Forest Man of India, in ep03 The Importance of Trees. This incredible man has singlehandedly planted an entire forest in what was once a barren sandbar. His mission was to stop soil erosion by planting trees and he has dedicated his life to the upkeep and growing of the forest. It is now a thriving ecosystem home to many species.

The remarkable story of The Forest Man of India shows the power of one person and how we can have a positive impact on the world around us. Anyone else feeling inspired to get out there and plant trees? 😍💚🌱 "It's not as if I did it alone. You plant one or two trees, and they have to seed. And once they seed, the wind knows how to plant them, the birds here know how to sow them, cows know, elephants know, even the Brahmaputra river knows. The entire ecosystem knows." Jadav Payeng.

Trees are a cost effective, efficient and natural solution to climate change 💚🌱💚🌱💚

I’ve been thinking about trees 🌳 and their importance as natural climate solutions to the We are recording a new episode about this very topic. Ecosystem protection and restoration is such an essential part of pulling back the tide of destruction that we have wrought on our planet. Not only that, we need oxygen to breath and trees miraculously provide us that by pulling CO2 out of the atmosphere and releasing oxygen in its place (magic 💫really). And of course, all of this talk of trees makes my ( ) mind wander back to the trees of Kalimantan. To the little seedlings that we would tenderly collect to replant at the reforestation site. Months spent slogging through swamps in the blazing hot sun, joined by swarms of mosquitos, all for the love of trees and making a small change to protect our earth. This was one of the days that we were thankfully able to have a little bit of shade coverage. We love trees. We hope that we all will (if you don’t already). And the potential that trees have to halting the climate crisis is actually really simple. We explain more in the podcast. It will be out soon, make sure to have a listen 💛

A few years ago Meg worked in South Africa rehabilitating rhino orphans.

This is a long process as rhino calves will usually stay with their mothers for around 3 years in the wild and aren’t weaned until they are around 18 months old. Many of the orphans are rescued at just a few months old and the majority are left orphaned due to poaching (a few are orphaned as a result of ongoing drought).

Once rescued, the rhino orphans receive around the clock care and are fed special milk formulas every few hours. Orphans of the same size/ age are usually put together through careful introductions and form close bonds.

The end goal is to release the rhinos back into the wild. The photos here feature the orphans who were cared for at these rhinos were released into a protected reserve almost exactly 2 years ago and have been living wild & free ever since.

and I have always wanted to collaborate on a project together. Our podcast beautifully weaves together our love for the earth with our naturally creative natures. ⁣

We’re getting ready to record our next episode all about the importance of trees and forests 🌳 Do you have any questions you want us to answer during the episode?

🌱The world needs more trees🌱⁣

The has declared that the years 2021-2030 will officially be the decade on ecosystem restoration! The restoring of land and marine ecosystems has the potential to remove between 13-26 gigatons of greenhouse gases from our atmosphere, create jobs, protect wildlife and improve food security for vulnerable communities. With the fate of our earth hanging in the balance (remember we have only 12 years left to halt a catastrophic climate temperature rise) now more than ever we need to restore our already damaged wild spaces.⁣

Both Meg and I are eternal optimists and truly believe that belief and vision (combined with a lot of sweaty hard work) can restore our earth’s rainforests🌳🌳🌱 ⁣

This is one of the reasons why we are recording our next podcast episode all about trees and rainforests. ⁣

Friday’s podcast is going to be taking a closer look at the importance of trees in our environment. Trees are vital, for so many reasons. Show host Morgan has been heavily involved in a reforestation project and has lots of wonderful information to share with us. With the fires currently burning in Australia and the Amazon and Indonesia fires earlier in the year, we feel this is a very important topic and it’s something we really want to take a closer look at.
