On Friday the 23rd we said goodbye to Lambeau. It was his 11th birthday. Finding the words to write this post was extremely difficult. How do you put into words these feelings of grief and love? How do you summarize the life of such a big personality? To some Beau was just a dog, but to us he was ripples, tidal waves, and inspiration. We realized that without him, the three of us would have never met. He helped Jimmy and his wife Kelli find new passions for Search and Rescue and animal training. At Uptown Pup, where Lambeau was employed part time, we referred to him as the doggie ambassador because he often helped us show other dogs that the world isn’t such a scary place. He interrupted our recording sessions by stealing slices of pizza and socks. He stole the heart of everyone who knew him. His life was truly a blessing and something we will all cherish forever.

We hope that you all help us keep the podcast going by liking, sharing and listening, and understand while we take a step away for a little bit to grieve. Thank you to everyone for sending your love, prayers, and positive energy. We will be back soon to continue helping dogs and their people live their best lives.

If you have a dog that barks and lunges at strangers and other dogs, you know how stressful walks can be. In order to help your walks become more enjoyable your goal should be to teach your dog that they can be comfortable during outings. It’s easy to get caught up in getting closer to their triggers and forget to have fun while training. After all, the reason we want them to be comfortable on walks is for their own enrichment and happiness.

So have fun, let your dog sniff, play, practice tricks, and observe their triggers at a distance. Soon going outside becomes a cue for fun, instead of a cue that they will are going on an outing to see things that stress them out.

What does your dog do when you’re not home?

Chaos’ parents are farmers and spend most of their time at home, so he doesn’t get very much time alone. It’s easy for dogs who spend all of their time with their guardians to develop separation anxiety. To combat this, his parents practice short sessions of Chaos getting alone time. He gets yummy stuffed toys and bones while his parents are away. These short sessions help Chaos realize that when he is left alone, it doesn’t always mean his parents will be gone for hours. It also helps build positive associations with being alone.

Bloodhounds have an estimated 250 – 300 million scent receptors — the most of any breed! Rowan is basically a nose attached to a dog, but that’s just one of the qualities that make him a tracking and trailing pro. He is also incredibly smart, determined, and sweet!

We are all so proud of this boy. 💙

While dad works from home, Copper scavenges for his daily kibble rations that have been sprinkled throughout the grass in the back yard.

The result is a happy and tired pup, and a dog dad with no interruptions. 😉

When you change environments, adjust your criteria until you know your dog can perform the same task in the new context.

Gypsy the husky has a great recall and goes for off leash hikes everyday. Today, the weather was gorgeous, so we took a longer route on our hike. We knew there would be a lot of new and interesting smells, so we packed tuna as a special high value treat, and let her leave us at a short distance before calling her back. We also increased her rate of reinforcement, treating her each time she checked in on her own.

Ultimately Gypsy had the same success she does on her normal hikes. Set your dog up for success by understanding what your dog struggles with and preparing for that before your training session starts.

Yesterday, the What’s UPdog? Trainers had the pleasure of doing our first ever live group webinar. We loved answering everyone’s questions and sharing our knowledge on a variety of different dog training topics. We hope it was the first of many more webinars.
