NUMBER 1 In the early 70s Johnnie Wilder, an American serviceman stationed in the UK, put an ad in the local paper looking to form a band. That’s when “Chicago’s Heatwave” was former. Playing in mainly small venues they didn’t see much success. Soon after shortening their name in 1977 they finally hit the charts with their third single “Boogie Nights” which went to #2 in the charts. In April 1978 they released their second album. The first single from that album also reached #2 on the charts but is NUMBER ONE on my list. Here is Heatwave with “Always and Forever” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6tKAVPLgPrI

Any quesses on the number one song? If you REALLY know me you'll know what it is

NUMBER 2 Our next song is from my personal all-time favorite performer. He was born in Harlem in 1961 and worked as a stock boy for Macy’s during his teen ager years. 40 years later he has released 13 albums, many #1 songs on the R&B charts and is still touring. I finally got to see him in concert in 2005 and have plans of seeing him again this year. Though I probably could have filled this count down with many of his songs this is my favorite. Here is Keith Sweat with “Nobody” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMar1ifzdmk

NUMBER 3 The members of this group met as mostly freshmen at Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University) in 1968, and signed with Motown in November 1972, having first caught the public eye opening for the Jackson 5 while on tour. The group is known for their EIGHT Top Ten but only one of them hit Number one. That song is number three on our countdown. From 1978 here is the Commodores with “Three Times a Lady” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B4dl6JSf-bc

NUMBER 4 Our next artist has a powerful, deep, earthy voice bridged the gap between rhythm and blues and rock and roll. She won six Grammy Awards and 17 Blues Music Awards. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, the Blues Hall of Fame in 2001, and the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999. Rolling Stone magazine ranked her as number 22 on its list of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time Here is Etta James with “At Last” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqr5M426FwQ

10/03/2019

NUMBER 5 Our next song was recorded on March 22, 1973 and was released just three weeks later, It spent a total of eight weeks atop the 1973 charts. Here is the only solo artist to grace my Top Ten with two songs, Marvin Gaye with “Let’s Get it On” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vAiESu5wrA

10/03/2019

NUMBER 6 The next artist was born in Washington DC and spent most of his childhood moving from public housing projects to public housing project. His father was a preacher and he starts singing in his father’s church at the age of four. Ironically it was his own father who on April 1, 1984 shot and killed him during an argument. At Number 5 we have Marvin Gaye with “Sexual Healing” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjlSiASsUIs

NUMBER 7 Many people don’t know that our next artist took a song called “Aura Lee” which was a Civil War song published in 1861 and puts new words to a new musical adaptation to it. "Aura Lee" later became popular with college glee clubs and barbershop quartets. It was also sung at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Our Artist recorded it in 1956 and took it start to the top of the charts. Here is “Love Me Tender” By Elvis Presley. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2lD711_Xh8s

10/03/2019

NUMBER 8 No Top Ten list of love songs would be complete without our next song. This song was written and sung by Billy Preston in 1974. That very same year our artist took the same song, slowed it down and released it as a single in November 1974, becoming his biggest hit. This song is probably one of the most covered songs of all time. Here is Joe Cocker with “You Are So Beautiful”. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHUejgwOyHI

10/03/2019

NUMBER 9 This power couple came together in 1981 to perform this one song. Though they both were very successful on their own, this song catapulted them into the limelight. The song spent nine weeks at Number One. Here is Lionel Richie and Diana Ross with “Endless Love” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Bwwo7ctG10

10/03/2019

NUMBER 10 Its hard to listen to our first song tonight and not picture yourself on the dance floor holding someone close as you sway to the rhythmic beat. The song was originally sung by David Allan Coe whose version only peaked at number 77 on the charts in 1981. George Jones' 1983 version reached number 2. However to me Chris Stapleton’s version is the best. Here is “Tennessee Whisky” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFOiiZ9Nkyw
