HISTORIC MOMENT! Marcus Garvey Posthumously Pardoned by President Biden 🌍✊🏽
In a landmark decision, President Joe Biden has issued a posthumous pardon to Marcus Mosiah Garvey, Jamaica's first National Hero and a towering figure in the Pan-African movement, 101 years after his controversial 1923 conviction for mail fraud. Garvey's conviction, widely regarded as racially and politically motivated, has long been a symbol of governmental injustice.
This historic move comes after years of advocacy from lawmakers, including Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke, who has tirelessly pushed for Garvey’s exoneration. She argued that Garvey was targeted to discredit his civil rights leadership.
“Exactly 101 years ago, Garvey was unjustly convicted due to a campaign of prosecutorial misconduct. The charges were fabricated to silence him as a champion for Black empowerment,” stated the Congressional Black Caucus in a letter to Biden last December.
Garvey, the founder of the Universal Negro Improvement Association, devoted his life to advancing the global economic and social well-being of Black people, leaving a lasting legacy that inspired leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela.
This pardon is not just a win for Garvey's family, but for the countless people he uplifted through his vision of unity, self-determination, and Black pride. 🖤✊🏽
