The history of the Asmat tribe is closely related to the traditions of war canoes and wood carving, which are characteristic of the Asmat tribe.

A deep dive into a pivotal moment in history: The 1969 Act of Free Choice, also known as "Pepera".

This process was crucial in determining the political status of West Papua following the transfer of administration from the Netherlands to Indonesia.

As outlined in the New York Agreement (1962), a vote was held to decide whether the territory would remain with Indonesia or become a separate state. Due to the geographical and social conditions of the time, the vote was conducted through a representative system, which was approved by the United Nations.

1,025 tribal representatives were selected, and their unanimous decision was to remain part of the Republic of Indonesia. This result was officially accepted by the international community through UN Resolution No. 2504.
