🚨COLD CASE ALERT🚨

The Placer County Sheriff’s Office needs your help in solving the cold case murder of Cherilyn Hawkley. Today marks 30 years since she was last seen alive.

Cherilyn, who was an elementary school teacher at Eureka Elementary School, was found deceased in her vehicle on Halloween in 1993; she was about a mile away from the school.

Cherilyn was reported missing by her boyfriend and was reported to have last been seen alive by her co-workers at school the Friday before Halloween. She was found several days later on Halloween by Placer County Sheriff’s Deputy Jeff Adams while he was on patrol. The deputy found her in the back seat of her minivan and located a rope near her body. A person of interest was interviewed, but never linked to her death. Cherilyn’s vehicle was the only crime scene connected to this case.

She was recently divorced and a mother of three children who had recently been hired by the Eureka School District. Cherilyn had also just purchased a new home in Roseville. She had previously worked for a school district in Chico, where her family lived at the time. It was reported that Cherilyn had lunch with one of her colleagues earlier that Friday and by all accounts had appeared very happy with life. She also had met with another teacher at 4:30 p.m. that afternoon, and they conveyed the same message to detectives. That second teacher had left the school at 6:30 p.m., but said they did not see Cherilyn’s car.

Cherilyn’s family was interviewed but did not provide any information to identify anyone who would want to harm her. This case remains open and our detectives continue to search for leads in hopes of bringing closure to her loved ones.

If you have any information about the death of Cherilyn Hawkley, please call our homicide tip line: (530) 889-7853.

🚨HUGE NEWS!
🚨ARREST MADE IN HOMEWOOD HOMICIDE!!
Former MLB player Danny Serafini and Stephanie Scott were arrested for the murder of Robert Spohr and the attempted murder of Wendy Wood in Homewood.

They are reportedly family by marriage (unconfirmed, in-laws)

Links in comments below ⬇️.

From PCSO:
After a lengthy two-year investigation involving Placer County Sheriff’s detectives and the District Attorney’s Office, 49-year-old Danny Serafini and 33-year-old Samantha Scott were arrested this morning in Nevada for the 2021 Homewood murder of 70-year-old Robert Gary Spohr and the attempted murder of 68-year-old Wendy Wood. PCSO detectives assisted in the apprehension of Serafini in Winnemucca, NV and also assisted in the apprehension of Scott in Las Vegas, NV. We thank the U.S. Marshal Service Reno Office, U.S. Marshal’s Nevada Violent Offender Task Force (Las Vegas), Winnemucca Police Department, and the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office with the arrests.

On June 5, 2021, deputies received a 911 call from a residence in Homewood, a neighborhood in North Lake Tahoe. Deputies arrived at the home and found Robert Gary Spohr deceased as a result of a single gunshot wound. Robert’s wife, Wendy, had also been shot but was taken to a nearby hospital where she recovered from her injuries. Unfortunately, Wendy passed away a year later. During the early stages of the investigation, video surveillance was obtained from the home and along West Lake Boulevard, revealing a hooded male wearing a face-covering and a backpack walking to the residence several hours before the homicide occurred. Since then, PCSO detectives have worked tirelessly over the course of the past two years, devoting countless hours of follow up by detectives, along with the DA’s Office. The information and evidence detectives gathered led them to identify Serafini and Scott as the suspects; both suspects are known to each other and to the victims.

After the arrests, Placer County Sheriff Wayne Woo praised the hard work and dedication put forth by detectives and the DA’s Office saying, “Today, justice was served. The apprehension of those responsible for the tragic events that unfolded in Homewood, North Lake Tahoe in 2021 stands as a testament to the unwavering dedication of our detectives, law enforcement partners, and the persistence of our pursuit of truth. Understand that my team’s commitment to unraveling the most complex of cases prevails, and those who inflict harm upon our community will be held accountable every time."

The sheriff’s office is now awaiting Serafini’s and Scott’s extradition from Nevada into Placer County.

𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐧 & 𝐍𝐨𝐰. Top photo is Ah Yee’s General Merchandise in 1899 after it was purchased by Sam (or Sen) Yuen Chung & Co. after Yee’s murder in December of 1898.

Yee was a beloved merchant in Old Town Auburn and was discovered nearly beheaded in his store after an apparent overnight robbery. Despite a dogged investigation, his killer was never found. He was buried in the Chinese Cemetery on Grass Valley Highway.

The murder was eerily similar to the murder of William McDaniel in 1867 when he too was found nearly beheaded in his store across the street from Yee’s in Auburn’s Chinatown. His killer was found, convicted of murder during a robbery of McDaniel’s store, and executed near the courthouse on Maple Street.

All that’s left of Yee’s store is the basement foundation where his laborers slept.

An update from NCSO with a more detailed description of the decedent found in March. DNA results are pending.
Nice of them to update, we don’t always see that.
One step closer to this woman getting her name back.

“Media Release Update: Human Remains Discovered 3/27/2023 Still Unidentified

The Nevada County Sheriff's Office investigation into the human remains found off I80 near Farad Rd east of Truckee on March 27, 2023, continues to be active and ongoing. The identification of the decedent is still unknown. Preliminary findings at this stage of the testing are minimal, however the remains are believed to be a female Caucasian adult. The age of the decedent is estimated to be between 30-70 years of age, with a height estimate of 5’1” to 5’6”, short to medium length brown hair, unknown weight, and unknown eye color. The year of death is estimated at 2022-2023. The female may have had a possible tattoo on the left side of her lower rear torso region, but it was not identifiable. Investigators hope that additional DNA analysis results, which remain pending, can further narrow the description of the woman. “

“Be vigilant, lock your doors at night.” PCSO

Erica Wright was like any of us, a mom enjoying a quiet spring night in her Roseville, California home last April 20, 2022.

Out of the darkness, evil came calling.

Someone inside her Livoti Avenue home reported hearing loud banging sounds, as the killer was outside of her home trying to break in.

He succeeded in breaking in (see photo).

Multiple calls were coming in to 911 now, as the sounds of the violent struggle echoed out of her broken window.

Then, suddenly as they began, the sounds abruptly ended.

Neighbors in the area reported seeing a man covered in blood, carrying a baseball bat, leaving the scene of the crime.

Law enforcement arrived moments later, and a massive, hours-long search ensued, including air support, drones and canine units, but to no avail.

Her murderer disappeared into the night.

Although Placer County detectives begged the public for eyewitness sightings, security video, etc., no additional descriptions or tips have led to any arrests or suspect information in this case.

Police have a brief description of a suspect: Male, 5’10”, wearing hoodie.

Neighbors are suspicious of transients and homeless people who recently began walking through the neighborhood after the construction of a transit station.

A mother, she was beloved by her family and friends and described by her employer, a law firm, as a “shining light.”

This case really needs a breakthrough.

There is a violent murderer wandering our streets.

If you saw anything, no matter how big or small, please let someone know. You may remain anonymous. We need your tips!

Ah Yee’s 1898 murder in Auburn still remains unsolved. Sometimes I think Auburn was the birth of the term “Wild West”…

Old town Auburn was, at times, a violent place.. Between 1850 and 1941, eighteen men & women met a very violent and frequently horrific end at the hands of another within an area of a few square blocks.

Many men swung from the gallows in old town Auburn. It was also a place that experienced some intense gun-battles as well. Below is a list of those incidents with a number corresponding to the approximate location on the map.

🩸 #1. 1850- Sheriff (or Deputy Sheriff) R. A. Echols was shot and killed by a drunken & disorderly Samuel Stewart.

☠️ #2. 1850- On Christmas Day, Mr. Sharp shot a man through the chinks of his cabin wall. He was forcibly removed from the jail and lynched from an oak tree at the corner of Commercial Street & Main Street.

☠️ #3. In 1854, Robert Scott was hanged near the jail for the murder of Andrew King near Rich Flat (near the current Bernhard Museum (just off map)).

☠️ #4. In 1856, James Freeman was hanged in the plaza between the American Hotel and the Wells Fargo & Co. block for the murder of Greek George east of Foresthill.

☠️☠️ #5 & #6. In 1860, Joseph N. Maes and Genaro Quintano were hanged side-by-side in the jail courtyard. Maes for the murder of Joseph Thomas in Dutch Flat and Quintano for the murder of John Reynolds in Michigan Bluff. This was the only double ex*****on in Auburn.

🩸 #7. 1867- William McDaniel was found in his Chinatown store at closing time by his wife. McDaniel had been nearly decapitated with a hatchet during a robbery.

☠️ #8. In 1867, Ah Sing was hanged in the jail courtyard for the murder of William McDaniel in his Sacramento Street store.

🩸 #9. 1884- A young Thomas Nicholls was shot by an angry gambler when he made an offhand remark the man didn’t like. He died in the doorway of the American Hotel, shot by Stephen Richards.

☠️ #10. In 1884, Stephen Richards was hanged in the jail courtyard for the murder of Thomas Nicholls in the old town plaza.

#11. In 1893, Undersheriff James Walsh got into a gun battle with two serial robbers in front of Lowell & Co. mercantile at Nevada & Court Streets.

🩸 #12. 1898- Ah Yee was beheaded with an axe in his Chinatown store on upper Sacramento Street during an overnight robbery. The crime remains unresolved.

#13. In 1904, Adolph Weber robbed the Placer County Bank on Commerical Street. He fired a round at a teller, but missed. As he fled a nearby store owner fired a round at the fleeing robber but also missed. Six months later he murdered his parents and younger siblings (next).

🩸🩸🩸🩸 #14-17. 1904- Julius, Mary, Bertha, & Earl Weber were brutally murdered by Adolph Weber in the family home they shared on Snowden Hill above Brewery Lane. Adolph was hanged at Folsom Prison for the murders.

🩸 #18. 1907- Edith Harrington was shot in the back of the head by her brother during a robbery. Her friend was also shot but survived. Edith’s Brewery Lane home was a brothel in Auburn’s “red light district”, a stone’s throw from the Weber residence.

#19. In 1916, Constable Dependener was involved in a shootout at the historic Courthouse when two men tried to liberate their brother from the jail there. The Constable was expected to die but survived.

🩸 #20. In 1918, Rita Cortopassi shot and killed her husband, Abdenago “Tony” Cortopassi in the saloon of the Orleans Hotel. She was acquitted at trial.

🩸🩸 #21-22. In 1940, Wong Don Kay shot and killed Lee See and Wong Chuck who he claimed owed him money. They were slain in front of the Hop Sing Laundry on lower Sacramento Street. Hop Sing was also wounded twice by gunfire. Kay was later executed at San Quentin for the murders.

I’ve written about several of these events on this page. Some more accounts will follow later.

ROSEVILLE, Calif. – Today, one of Justine Vanderschoot’s murderers, Daniel Bezemer, was denied parole for a second time by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

On March 23, the Placer County District Attorney’s Office supported Justine’s family in a second hearing with the parole board regarding the release of Daniel Bezemer. Prosecutors and the family attended the parole hearing together to oppose his release.

During the hearing, the board reviewed the totality of the circumstances surrounding the crime, the lasting effect of the crime on the family and the community, what the inmate's future plans are should he be paroled, a report on the inmate’s behavior during his time in prison, among other factors. Both the Vanderschoot family and Bezemer were given the opportunity to speak.

After a six-hour long hearing, the board decided to deny parole for Daniel Bezemer for five years.

“We are pleased with CDCR’s decision to deny parole again for Daniel Bezemer,” said Placer County District Attorney Morgan Gire. “Bezemer planned and carried out the cruel and vicious murder of Justine. He exhibited a frighteningly sophisticated level of deceit and depravity during and after the murder that defies all sense of humanity. A beautiful young life was senselessly taken, leaving a loving family and an entire community devastated. The Vanderschoot family has shown incredible strength and grace throughout this process, and we are honored to fight alongside them for justice for Justine.”

Daniel Bezemer and his roommate Brandon Fernandez were convicted of the strangulation and murder of Justine Vanderschoot in 2003.

His accomplice, Brandon Fernandez, was recently denied parole July 2022 for five years.
In Aug. 2022, the board decided to deny parole for Daniel Bezemer. In Oct. 2022, the Executive Board of the Board of Parole Hearings, a division of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, voted to vacate Daniel Bezemer’s Aug. 10 parole hearing that resulted in him being denied parole.

The vote was made based on a “procedural error” with CDCR stating their recording device was unable to record the entirety of the original hearing. The board then voted to allow Bezemer a new hearing to ensure the recording of the entire hearing.

This is now the fifth hearing the Vanderschoot family has had to experience since the original sentencing. Justine’s family will explain how these hearings are like “ripping off the band aid” every single time they are forced to relive the horrible tragedy through these hearings.

The Placer County District Attorney’s Office’s Lifer Parole Case division has supported the Vanderschoot family through the parole process. Leading into the parole hearing, the Placer County District Attorney’s Office received overwhelming support for the Vanderschoot family. The Justice for Justine educational campaign has received tens of thousands of views, petition signatures, letters to CDCR and more due to community support and partnership with Placer County Sheriff's Office and Crime Victims United.

Justine’s family has since turned their pain into advocacy. The have worked over the years to educate the community on the risks of teen dating violence. They are currently chairing the Empower + Resilience project, a program designed to empower individuals experiencing the criminal justice system. Through the E+R Project they have sponsored Assembly Bill 1071 which encourages California schools to teach the risk of teen dating violence.

You can learn more about Justine’s story at placer.ca.gov/JusticeforJustine and learn more about AB 1071 at https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202320240AB1071
