• A 19-year-old nursing trainee was r***d, allegedly by an auto-rickshaw driver, in Maharashtra’s Ratnagiri district. According to preliminary information, the victim had taken an auto-rickshaw ride home when the driver offered her drinking water. The water was spiked and the teenager lost consciousness. The driver then allegedly took the victim to a deserted place and s*xually assaulted her.

• On regaining consciousness, the victim informed her family and later registered a police complaint. An FIR has been registered and police are scanning CCTV footage to zero in on the accused. The woman is recovering at a state-run hospital.

• The incident in comes amid outrage against crime against women in the aftermath of the r**e and murder of a doctor in Kolkata.

On the eve of her birthday, a 24-year-old software engineer in Tamil Nadu was chained, slashed with a blade and burnt alive by her former classmate who had undergone a s*x change operation to marry her, police said today.

The disturbing incident unfolded in Thalambur near Kelambakkam, a quiet southern suburb of Chennai. According to police reports, 26-year-old Vetrimaran alias Pandi Maheswari, under the guise of a birthday surprise, blindfolded 24-year-old R Nandhini and subjected her to an unimaginable ordeal involving chains and petrol.

The unsuspecting victim, a native of Madurai and a software engineer, had been residing with relatives in Chennai. Vetrimaran, having changed his name from Pandi Maheswari, lured Nandhini into his deadly trap on the pretext of a birthday celebration.

• To make security checks quicker and error-free at India’s hypersensitive airports, the Airport Authority of India (AAl) received clearance from the Public Investment Board (PIB) to install full-body scanners that will cut down the passenger frisking time by half.

• In July, the government had floated a tender to procure 131 full-body scanners- that cut down the average passenger frisking time to 15 seconds from the current 30 and 600 new hand baggage scanners at over $ 1,000 crore at airports run by the Airports Authority of India (AAl) but it was later withdrawn as it needed clearance from PIB.

• The national capital’s Indira Gandhi International Airport will be the first in the country to get a full-body scanner and CTX, with other cities including Mumbai expected to get these machines soon.

In Madhya Pradesh, ‘stone balls’ that were being worshipped by the locals for ages have turned out to be fossilized dinosaur eggs.

The revelation came to light when a team of experts from Lucknow’s Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences conducted research at the site. Following their investigation, the experts determined that the fossilized eggs belonged to the Titanosaurus species of dinosaur.

This year, paleontologists made a noteworthy discovery in the Narmada valley of Madhya Pradesh, reporting the rare finding of closely located dinosaur nests and 256 eggs from the herbivorous Titanosaurs.

In a startling development, an additional 49 members have been subjected to suspension from Parliament today, compounding the shock caused by the earlier suspension of 79 Opposition MPs in a single day. This brings the total number of MPs suspended during this session to an unprecedented 141, marking a historic high.

Prominent political figures, including National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah, Congress leaders Shashi Tharoor and Karti Chidambaram, NCP’s Supriya Sule, and Samajwadi Party’s Dimple Yadav, are among those suspended by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla for disrupting proceedings.

The suspension comes in the midst of ongoing protests by Opposition MPs in both Houses of Parliament, triggered by a significant security breach in the Lok Sabha the previous week. The MPs are demanding that Union Home Minister Amit Shah address the Parliament regarding the security lapse that allowed two intruders to enter the Lok Sabha chamber, traverse desks, and release colored smoke from canisters.

India has made history as its Moon mission becomes the first to land in the lunar south pole region.

With this, India joins an elite club of countries to achieve a soft landing on the Moon, after the US, the former Soviet Union and China.

The Vikram lander from Chandrayaan-3 successfully touched down as planned at 18:04 local time (12:34 GMT).

Celebrations have broken out across the country, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying "India is now on the Moon".

• A rocket carrying a lunar landing craft blasted off Friday on Russia’s first moon mission in nearly 50 years, racing to land on Earth’s satellite ahead of an Indian spacecraft.

• The launch from Russia’s Vostochny spaceport in the Far East of the Luna-25 craft to the moon is Russia’s first since 1976 when it was part of the Soviet Union.

• The Russian lunar lander is expected to reach the moon on Aug. 23, about the same day as an Indian craft which was launched on July 14. The Russian spacecraft will take about 5.5 days to travel to the moon's vicinity, then spend three to seven days orbiting at about 100 kilometers (62 miles) before heading for the surface.

• Kerala’s Legislative Assembly on Tuesday unanimously passed a resolution against the Centre’s plan to implement a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), saying that the move is “hasty and unilateral” and that it would “do away with the secular character of the Constitution”.

• Moved by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, the resolution was backed by both the ruling CPI(M)-led LDF and the Opposition Congress-led UDF.

• Pointing out that secularism was guaranteed in the very Preamble to the Constitution, the resolution said the Constitution gave citizens the freedom to believe in any religion and live accordingly.

The Rajya Sabha on Monday passed the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023, after witnessing more than six hours of debate followed by voting through slips. Debating on the Bill that seeks to replace ordinance on the control of services in Delhi, Union Minister of Home Affairs Amit Shah said that the Bill does not violate the Supreme Court order. He further said, “I want to assure the House that aim of the Delhi services bill is to provide corruption-free governance in Delhi.”

• Dozens of people have died in at least three states — Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Odisha — in the last three days due to exposure to intense heat, doctors in these regions have said, with weather officials separately warning that severe heatwaves will continue in many parts of the country.

• Most of these deaths have been reported from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, including in UP’s Ballia where a district hospital reported at least 83 fatalities since June 11, of which 44-54 are believed to be of people whose existing illnesses turned fatal due to the high heat and humidity.
