In 2019, researches discovered a lone female tortoise on the island that suggested the Fantastic Giant Tortoise might still be alive.
After delays mainly due to Covid-19, last week researchers finally found proof between this specimen, and a male tortoise that was found on the island in 1906!
Named Fernanda, she is small for her size, according to scientists in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. Evelyn Jensen says her growth may have been stunted due to being confined to a small patch of vegetation between flowing lava. The island being an active volcano may also be the reason for the small number of tortoises found there.
Fernanda is now believed to be the last of her kind, an ‘endling’, although scientists say this has given them hope that there might be a male tortoise out there, stating it is vital for their breeding program. They also believe Fernanda is around 50 years old, meaning she could have another 100 years of life left in her.
Fernanda is now at her new home at the Galápagos National Park Tortoise Center, where experts work on what they can do to keep her species alive.
