Today’s is Debbie Rigaud author of our YA October box selection - SIMONE BREAKS ALL THE RULES and our current book of the week pick.

Excerpt from http://debbierigaud.com

“I’m a total Jersey girl at heart, but I live with my husband, our two kiddos and rescue dog in Columbus, Ohio. We have yet to encounter a highway toll booth, and every time we drive below an overpass our kids shout, Whoa, a tunnel! :-)

I come from a strong oral storytelling tradition. My grandmother Lamercie Joseph especially, was known for constructing vivid, hilarious tales. Her saucy stories were peppered with wit, and humorous observations of the motivations behind everyday human behavior. This influence is reflected throughout my writing

Not bad for a bridge and tunnel kid from around-the-way.”

Be sure to visit http://debbierigaud.com to learn more about Debbie as well as past and upcoming projects.

If you didn’t select this book for your October box, please pick up a copy from your favorite indie bookstore. Most also accept orders online through http://Bookshop.org. Check out our posts each weekend highlighting a diverse bookstore.

Our is a laugh-out-loud story about friendship, prom, and learning that sometimes you don't have to look as far as you think to find yourself. We selected this as one of our October books celebrating Latinx Heritage as a reminder that Haitians are part of the Latinx community

SIMONE BREAKS ALL THE RULES x Debbie Rigaud

Genre: YA Fiction
DiversaTea: Haitian
Published: June 1, 2021

Synopsis

Perfect for fans of You Should See Me in a Crown and Never Have I Ever, this hilarious and heartfelt rom-com from bestselling author Debbie Rigaud is pure Black girl joy.

Simone Thibodeaux is about to switch things up.

Check her life: It’s sealed in a boy-proof container. Her Haitian immigrant parents send Simone to an all-girls high school and enforce strict no-dating rules. As for prom? Simone is allowed to go on one condition: Her parents will select her date (a boy from a nice, Haitian immigrant family, obviously).

Simone is desperate to avoid the setup -- especially since she has a serious crush on another boy. It's time to take action. Simone and her fellow late-bloomer friends make a senior year bucket list of all the wild things they haven't done yet. Like: going out dancing, skipping class (what), and oh yeah -- deciding their own prom destinies.

But as the list takes on a life of its own, things get much messier than Simone expected. Can she figure out which rules are worth breaking and which might save her from heartbreak?

If you missed SIMONE BREAKS ALL THE RULES in our October box, please visit your local indie bookstore or http://Bookshop.org to pick up a copy.

Indigenous Peoples' Day is a holiday that celebrates and honors Native American peoples and commemorates their histories and cultures. On October 8, 2021, U.S. President Joe Biden, the first U.S. President to formally recognize the holiday, signed a presidential proclamation declaring October 11 to be a national holiday. It is celebrated across the United States on the second Monday in October, and is an official city and state holiday in various localities. It began as a counter-celebration held on the same day as the U.S. federal holiday of Columbus Day, which honors Italian explorer Christopher Columbus. Many reject celebrating him, saying that he represents "the violent history of the colonization in the Western Hemisphere," and that Columbus Day is a sanitization or covering-up of Christopher Columbus' actions such as enslaving Native Americans. Indigenous People’s Day was instituted in Berkeley, California, in 1992, to coincide with the 500th anniversary of the arrival of Columbus in the Americas on October 12, 1492. Two years later, Santa Cruz, California, instituted the holiday. Starting in 2014, many other cities and states adopted the holiday.

Did you know that October was LGBTQ+ History Month? Last night we had the pleasure of hanging out on IG Live with as they dropped some book gems that highlight LGBTQ+ History. If you do nothing else today, make sure you follow their account as they spend October spotlighting some of the history within the LGBTQ+ community.

LGBT History Month is an annual month-long observance of le***an, gay, bisexual and transgender history, and the history of the gay rights and related civil rights movements. It was founded in 1994 by Missouri high-school history teacher Rodney Wilson. LGBT History Month provides role models, builds community, and represents a civil rights statement about the contributions of the LGBTQ+ community. As of 2020, LGBT History Month is a month-long celebration that is specific to Hungary, the United States, Canada, Australia, Brazil, Greenland, and the city of Berlin.

In the United States, Canada, and Australia, it is celebrated in October to coincide with National Coming Out Day on 11 October and to commemorate the first and second marches on Washington in 1979 and 1987 for LGBT rights. In Hungary and the United Kingdom, it is observed during February; in the UK this coincides with a major celebration of the 2003 abolition of Section 28. In Berlin, It is known as Q***r History Month and is celebrated in May.

Our is a sweeping, masterful debut about a daughter's fateful choice, a mother motivated by her own past, and a family legacy that begins in Cuba before either of them were born and aligns with September’s IMMIGRATION theme.

OF WOMEN AND SALT x Gabriela Garcia

Genre: Literary Fiction
DiversaTea: Cuban
Published: April 30, 2021

Synopsis

In present-day Miami, Jeanette is battling addiction. Daughter of Carmen, a Cuban immigrant, she is determined to learn more about her family history from her reticent mother and makes the snap decision to take in the daughter of a neighbor detained by ICE. Carmen, still wrestling with the trauma of displacement, must process her difficult relationship with her own mother while trying to raise a wayward Jeanette. Steadfast in her quest for understanding, Jeanette travels to Cuba to see her grandmother and reckon with secrets from the past destined to erupt.

From 19th-century cigar factories to present-day detention centers, from Cuba to Mexico, Gabriela Garcia's OF WOMEN AND SALT is a kaleidoscopic portrait of betrayals—personal and political, self-inflicted and those done by others—that have shaped the lives of these extraordinary women. A haunting meditation on the choices of mothers, the legacy of the memories they carry, and the tenacity of women who choose to tell their stories despite those who wish to silence them, this is more than a diaspora story; it is a story of America’s most tangled, honest, human roots.
