Today marks the 60th anniversary of the March on Washington — a pivotal moment in our nation’s history and a turning point in the civil rights movement. The architect of this momentous demonstration was Bayard Rustin, one of the greatest activists and organizers the world has ever known and an undeniable giant in the fight for freedom. Bayard wasn’t afraid to challenge authority and refused to apologize for who he was, what he believed, or who he loved. We cannot wait to celebrate his life and legacy this fall when RUSTIN opens in select theaters on November 3 & begins streaming on Netflix on November 17.

The first look at images from the feature film Rustin is here from Vanity Fair! Directed by George C. Wolfe and starring Emmy winner Colman Domingo, the film follows the life, legacy, and leadership of Bayard Rustin, the organizer, activist, and unsung hero who co-organized the 1963 March on Washington. As a gay Black man living and fighting for freedom in the 1960s, Bayard contended with racism and homophobia both in the world and within the civil rights movement. This film celebrates not only Bayard’s historic contributions to advancing American progress but also his unwavering commitment to truly advancing freedom and justice for all. You can see Rustin in select theaters and on Netflix this fall.

Yesterday, Colman Domingo and Audra McDonald — stars of the upcoming Higher Ground film RUSTIN — participated in The White House’s Juneteenth concert, which celebrated community, culture and music ahead of the upcoming holiday. Juneteenth was established as a federal holiday in 2021 to present an opportunity for all Americans to learn from our history, celebrate our progress and recognize and engage in the work that continues. These calls to action also lay at the heart of the RUSTIN film and we cannot wait to share Bayard Rustin’s story with audiences worldwide later this year!

Work — the centerpiece of so many of our day-to-day conversations. Oral historian Studs Terkel revolutionized the conversation around work in his book, “Working,” by asking ordinary people what they did all day. StoryCorps’ mission to preserve and share humanity’s stories was in fact inspired in part by Terkel’s oral history project.
Now, inspired by Studs Terkel’s approach to archiving the American experience, former President Barack Obama has produced with Higher Ground a new Netflix documentary series, “Working: What We Do All Day.”

Today, on what would be his 111th birthday, we honor the legacy of Bayard Rustin, a pioneering civil rights leader who dedicated his life to fighting for justice and equality. Rustin was a key organizer behind the historic 1963 March on Washington, where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech.
Despite facing discrimination due to being an openly gay Black man, Rustin remained a determined advocate for social change. He understood the importance of standing up for what is right, even in the face of adversity. Rustin famously said, “We need, in every community, a group of angelic troublemakers.” Today, we honor his legacy by being those troublemakers.
RUSTIN is coming to Netflix in 2023.
