About Like You
Like You is a children’s podcast that blends simple mindfulness exercises with encouraging words and thought experiments centered around things like empathy, kindness, friendship, etc. Overall, the goal of the podcast is to create a calming listening experience for children (~3-8yo) that helps them develop a positive sense of self and a loving outlook toward others. The podcast is currently in pre-production. It will launch publicly in early 2020. I created this podcast because I am a father of two wonderful young girls. Every day I get to relive the experience of childhood through their eyes. Childhood is filled with plenty of joy and wonder, but it's also filled with things that are hard. Like learning to understand our feelings, learning to understand others, and figuring out how we fit into a great big world. Our kids' early years are spent learning - in just a few quick years, they learn to walk, to speak, to count, to say their ABCs. Soon they begin school and they are learning to read, write, and do math. We put a lot of effort into our children's education, but what about their social and emotional education? Children are growing just as quickly on the inside as they are on the outside. During these early years they are learning who they are. I want my kids to learn to appreciate who they are by understanding their own feelings. I want them to approach others with kindness, compassion, and empathy. One of my heroes is Fred Rogers. I grew up watching Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, but I've come to appreciate it even more as an adult, and as a parent. At the end of every episode he tells the children watching: "You make each day a special day. You know how? By just your being you. There's only one person in this whole world like you, and people can like you exactly as you are." Every child needs to know that they matter, and that's the message I want to put into each episode. The title of the podcast is only two words, but those 2 words are packed with multiple layers of meaning. 1. I like you just the way you are (positive outside affirmation) 2. I was just like you (parents/adults sharing their childhood experiences help a child feel understood) 3. Like you. (Encouraging a child to like themself) 4. Others are like you. (Many emotions and challenges of childhood are universal) The podcast itself is presented as a simple conversation between friends - the host and the listener. I pull inspiration from practices of mindfulness, meditation, and affirmations and I adapt and present these things in a simplified way that's easy for children to enjoy - talking about feelings, using our imaginations, and spending quiet time together. The episodes are short and calming; they are a great way to start the day, listen during quiet time or nap time, decompress after a school day, or wind down before bed.
