Today’s NMC Member Spotlight features The College Band Directors National Association!

Since 1938, the College Band Director's National Association (CBDNA) has undergone a remarkable evolution. Beginning as a committee within the Music Educators National Conference, CBDNA's journey was initiated when William D. Revelli assumed the role of committee chair in 1938. From its humble beginnings and limited focus, it became evident that a dedicated organization was needed to address the unique needs of collegiate bands. Consequently, on December 22, 1941, CBDNA was officially established during the Midwest Clinic in Chicago, Illinois, starting with just 40 members but currently thriving with over 700 active members. Over the span of 80 years, CBDNA has remained resolute in adapting to the ever-changing challenges facing college band directors. CBDNA emphasizes its commitment to music education, performance, and the wind band medium, embracing diverse philosophies and professional practices. CBDNA's is devoted to college band's significance as a medium of musical expression, outlining its roles in promoting education, culture, and artistry. CBDNA's pledged to support the growth and development of musicians, teachers, conductors, and administrators, furthering its enduring principles.

CDNA's objectives and mission closely align with the National Music Council, as they both strive to:
-promote lifelong music education and access to music participation as fundamental to human development, representing an investment in people, culture and the economy
-uphold the teaching, learning and experiencing of music in our schools as an indispensable part of a well-rounded education
-encourage the development and appreciation of the art of music

On July 31, 2023, the Taliban burned thousands of dollars worth of musical instruments in the western Herat province of Afghanistan, claiming that music “causes moral corruption”. Ahmad Sarmast, the founder of the Afghanistan National Institute of Music, compared their actions to "cultural genocide and musical vandalism".

The National Music Council protests on behalf of all American music creators and their supporters, and will act as best we can in defense of the musical arts and those who create it around the world.

The House Labor-HHS-Appropriations subcommittee introduced its funding bill for fiscal year 2024, which includes the Department of Education's (ED) budget. The bill would provide the Department of Education with $57.1 billion in discretionary funding, which is a $22.5 billion (28%) decrease below FY24 funding and falls $33 billion short of the President’s request. This is the lowest funding amount allocated to ED since 2006 and will have devastating impacts throughout America's education system, if enacted. To avoid the potential impact of slashing ED's budget by more than 1/4, we need you, music education advocates, to rally together and show your support for these vital programs.

Urge your members of Congress to support robust funding for Titles I, Il, and IV-A in the FY 2024 Labor-Health and Human Services-Education appropriations bill.

"Music’s dual, facile ability to serve as both a powerful tool of propaganda and as an existential threat to power structures and political leaders has made it a prime focus of nervous governmental concern over the entire span of history….[M]usic creators and performers have [thus] not only been frequently subject to pressure to conform and participate in governmental propaganda efforts, but also to repressive actions up to and including murder to enforce the silence of those dangerous, high-profile individuals who will not comply. In many cases, this effectively neuters the most persuasive voices of protest, while at the same time setting an example of what happens to those less visible citizens who choose dissent. The repression of music and creators is a government’s way of warning all of its people, “if this is what we’ll do to them, imagine what we’ll do to you.”

The National Music Council of the United States presented its 2023 American Eagle Award to music visionaries Ray Chew and Vivian Scott Chew on Sunday, June 25, 2023, at the American Federation of Musicians Convention in Las Vegas. The honor is presented each year in recognition of those who have made career-long contributions to American musical culture, to promoting the ideal of music education for all children, and to supporting the protection of creators’ rights both locally and internationally. The Chews were honored “in recognition of their longstanding commitment to fostering and providing excellence in American musical performance and education, and for the inspiration they have consistently generated throughout the global music community by their dedication to the ideal of equal opportunity for all.”

This year’s special presenter was Academy Award and multi-Grammy-winning artist Regina Belle. Her tribute to the Chews included an emotional performance of So Glad I Got You, a song written by her late brother, Bernard Belle, which she dedicated to the couple. She was accompanied on piano by her nephew, Tyrone Belle.

20/06/2023

The National Music Council of the United States (NMC) was distressed to learn that on June 5, 2023, the Government of Hong Kong had filed a request for an injunction with a local court to halt performances and distributions of the pro-independence music anthem “Glory to Hong Kong.” If issued, the injunction could expose the songwriters, recording artists, labels and global distributors of the song to both criminal and civil liability in China, possibly for acts committed anywhere in the world. NMC, as evidenced by its recent symposium on the increasing suppression of music around the world, is monitoring all such instances of attempted censorship and hopes the current situation can be peaceably resolved without further escalation.
We will continue to keep the American music community apprised of further developments. If history has taught us one thing, it is that when it comes to persecution of artists and creators, silence is neither an effective nor an acceptable strategy.
