The Telangana High Court on Tuesday, February 6, ordered the GHMC and revenue officials to remove unregistered places of worship, which include a temple and a mosque, and illegal constructions from GVM Road to Musheerabad Road in New Bakaram. The HC has also sought a status report in three weeks.

A division bench comprising Justice Abhinand Kumar Shavili and Justice Namavarapu Rajeshwar Rao gave the order on a contempt case filed by K Sreedhar Reddy of Shatabdi Nilayam Flat Owners Welfare Association who accused the officials of inaction despite a court order to remove encroachments on both sides of the road leading to Janapriya Abodes Apartments in Musheerabad.

Sreedhar Reddy had moved the HC in 2022 against the illegal constructions. The court had then directed the collector and GHMC authorities to remove the encroachments.

The court order of 2023 was not complied with and a contempt case mentioning then MAUD principal secretary Arvind Kumar, the GHMC chief Lokesh Kumar and then collector Amoy Kumar as respondents. There was no action after the officers were transferred, the petitioner contended.

Subsequently, the court issues summons to GHMC commissioner Ronald Rose and collector Anudeep Durisetty. Both the officials appeared before the court and said they would comply with the court order within four weeks.

The court said that any construction, even if it is a temple or a masjid, is liable to be shifted if it is located on the road margin

RBI stops Paytm Payments Bank from accepting deposits after Feb 29

The RBI on Wednesday barred Paytm Payments Bank Ltd from accepting deposits or top-ups in any customer account, prepaid instruments, wallets, and FASTags, among others after February 29, 2024.

The Reserve Bank's action against Paytm Payments Bank Ltd (PPBL) follows a comprehensive system audit report and subsequent compliance validation report of the external auditors.

These reports revealed persistent non-compliances and continued material supervisory concerns in the bank, warranting further supervisory action, the RBI said in a statement.

"No further deposits or credit transactions or top ups shall be allowed in any customer accounts, prepaid instruments, wallets, FASTags, NCMC cards, etc. after February 29, 2024, other than any interest, cashbacks, or refunds which may be credited anytime," it said.

The central bank further said withdrawal or utilisation of balances by its customers from their accounts including savings bank accounts, current accounts, prepaid instruments, FASTags, National Common Mobility Cards are to be permitted without any restrictions, up to their available balance.

The RBI in March 2022 had directed PPBL to stop onboarding new customers with immediate effect.

A special Pakistani court has sentenced former Prime Minister Imran Khan to 10 years for exposing official secrets, his party said.

The special court, established under the Official Secrets Act, announced its verdict on Tuesday, handing Khan and his key ally ex-foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi to 10 years in jail in the "cipher case," local news reported.

The court was established to hear what popularly became to be known as the "cipher case," which was filed against Khan under the Official Secrets Act of 1923 and alleged that he divulged the contents of a diplomatic cable sent in 2022 from Pakistan's Washington mission to Islamabad.

The former prime minister claimed the diplomatic cable contained proof that his ouster from power in a parliamentary no-trust vote in April last year was part of a US conspiracy to remove him and included threats against his government.

21/01/2024

In less than 24 hours, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to preside over the pran pratishtha (consecration) ceremony of Ram temple in Ayodhya, which political experts see as a trump card for the right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

For many Hindutva nationalists, the Ram Janmabhoomi temple is a symbol of endurance and a call for an Akhand Hindu Rashtra. But for Muslims living near the construction site, it brings up the fears of the violence that followed the demolition of Babri Masjid, leaving over 2,000 dead across the country. They also fear losing their houses and livelihood.

Eerie silence amid celebrations

As Ayodhya is painted in saffron hues and chants of Jai Shri Ram reverberate through the temple town, an eerie silence prevails in a few lanes near the construction site. Of the four lakh Muslims residing in the entire city, 5,000 live in the Old Ayodhya town.

The silence is heightened by frequent vigils by large police contingents. "We have been told not to entertain any guest from outside, and we are required to inform the police if any guest comes to stay with us," said one elderly Muslim woman.

The local administration stresses that security has been beefed up as these localities are closer to the outer iron fencing around the new temple.

However, the locals see it differently. Many Muslims living in these areas have expressed the fear of repeat of violence that following December 6, 1992, when the 16th-century-old Babri Masjid was razed down brick by brick by kar sevaks (religious volunteers), resulting in death, destruction and displacement of Muslims across the country.

HYDERABAD: The worst fears of the denizens of Hyderabad have begun to unfold with regard to power cuts. The Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Ltd (TSSPDCL) has announced that in view of the upcoming summer season, the company wants to take up tree cutting and maintenance of power supply lines from January 17.

In a late evening media announcement, the TSSPDCL said that Chairman and Managing Director of the company Musharraf Ali and other officials drew up a schedule to impose two-hour power cut in different parts of the State Capital, precisely under the HMDA area ,for taking up of maintenance of sub-stations, transmission and distribution lines and also tree cutting.

The company announced that it would like to take power shutdown in a time spanning 15 minutes to a maximum of two hours in each area and the schedule of timings of power cut area wise would be announced in TSSPDCL website every day by 4 pm.

The company announced the schedule for January 17. The shutdown would be taken on rotation basis of areas and it was for now decided to impose these power cuts till February 10, 2024.During electioneering, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi had expressed its apprehension about the possibility of power cuts not only for domestic sector, but even for industrial and agricultural sectors. Netizens began reacting to the announcement of power shutdown schedule that this was just a preparatory attempt by the TSSPDCL for an imminent much longer power cut schedules and the darker days that are staring at the people. Will this move cast its cloud on the newly-elected Congress regime has yet to be seen.

The BRS had predicted the power cuts when the Congress Government presented a white paper on the floor of the Assembly on the power situation. Similar doubts would engulf the implementation of the six guarantees that were promised to the people due to paucity of funds, as the Government had also presented a white paper on the financial situation of the State and claimed that it was debt ridden. Power Cut schedules could be verified in the TSSPDCL website.

11/01/2024

Paediatricians have reported cases of scarlet fever in the city. Scarlet fever comes with a streptococcal throat infection with sandpaper like skin rash and is highly contagious, doctors said.

As it tends to spread quickly, doctors advised against sending children with symptoms to school.

The ailment can spread when an infected person sneezes or coughs, shares food or water, and by touching secretions and carrying them to nose or mouth.

The fever, with chills, is typically accompanied with strawberry colour of tongue, sore throat with white patches, enlarged lymph nodes, nausea, abdominal pain and headaches. "I am seeing half-a-dozen cases in the age group of 5-15 per day since a few days.

Delaying treatment can have implications for heart and kidney in addition to worsening of child's condition," said paediatrician Dr Sivaranjani Santosh. Dr P Ravi Kumar, paediatrician at Niloufer Hospital said: "Detecting these cases isn't easy as it requires throat swab culture." tnn
