Upon returning to Thailand in 2020, Krerkburin started the series, SurrealLand!, as a sarcastic and critical commentary on his homeland. Combined with his archive works from 2014, the images are extraordinary shots of ordinary days of life. These are “twists from wrong to right, and right to wrong” in society, seen, but sometimes disregarded. “My work is satirical on this point. I use humour because it is simple and straightforward; at the same time, it can subtly reveal meaningful undertones, encourage scepticism, and provoke new questions about the culture itself. In my country, we can’t speak about everything we think in the public space, ” says the photographer, allowing viewers to dissect these issues leaving a silent conversation between himself, the images and us — viewers.

In our own SurrealLand!, do we continue to bow down and embrace conventions that do not bring good results? Do we recognise faults or inappropriate actions and take the courage to resolve and correct those? Or do we turn a blind eye?

Photographer Krerkburin Kernburi captures human behaviours in the SurrealLand! The pictures, if viewed seriously, allow us to be critical, possibly revealing issues relevant to our society.

In one picture, two persons bend themselves, their faces hidden. In another frame, a child squats down while leaning forward. The gestures are random. Several snapshots highlight the eyes; one is on a screen, a second is on a phoropter( an instrument to measure and correct vision), and a third is with a plaster. The choice of the subject is curious. These are some of the intriguing images from Krerkburin Kerngburi’s SurrealLand! The series are shots of unusual scenes, bizarre assemblages of symbols and objects, and chance compositions of “slipping social semblances and absurdities of realities”.

“I believe minimalism is a way of life, not just in how you dress, but in how you live, the activities you do, the books you read, and the kind of kitchenware you buy. I like simplicity. It helps me focus on the things that are most important and absolutely necessary. For a long time, it has become a way of life, a part of me, and it is reflected in the products that I create.” - Lam Gia Khang of on minimalism and simplicity as a crucial part of his work.

Like many other artists, Roun Ry successfully bridges his yearning for balance between the person he is and the person whom he wants to be. Through his photography series, Cham Community Project, visual raconteur Roun Ry had his childhood questions answered where he retells the stories of the Muslim community around Krong Siem Reap. The series reinforces his thoughts that if you look closer, celebrating diversity is redemptive, if not liberating.

Callie Eh Underlines The Meaning Of Happiness Amongst Humanity Through Her Portraits.

The Switzerland-based Malaysian photographer fell in love with the magic of photography as she narrates stories of people she met in her journeys.

Happiness cannot be constricted to a single line of text. There are no words to fully describe it. Happiness is a unique, personal feeling in every person’s life and this uniqueness was the main foundation of Callie’s series...
“Happiness comes to people that enjoy the moment and create a better, more joyful life through their passions,” she explains. It is not about material objects, fame, or superficial aims, it’s rather the joy that stems from passion, from work, from loving every single moment in life. Her work unravels this very thread that connects humanity: fulfilment and happiness. "

Turning Melancholia Into Portraiture — How ‘Beyond Grief’ Shows A Photographer Wrestling With Loss

Abdul Razzak Jauhar visualises how losing a loved one is experienced beyond the borders of the dead and the living.

After losing both of his grandmothers in the past year, Abdul Razzak Jauhar took his grief and turned it into a source of inspiration for his art. Initially started as a personal project, “Beyond Grief” was planned to be an artistic outlet for him to explore all the thoughts and feelings he experienced after his loss, specifically those regarding death, destruction, and related emotions...

"“That’s why, in the portraiture, we want to create the impression of scary and out of this world, resembling our notion of death as an eliminating force of life and our negative feelings towards it because we lose someone we love by it, but at the same time [that it is] ethereal, beautiful, and motherly.”

LINEAL | Asymmetry Is A Photo Series Tackling Urban Identities

Mao Sovanchandy challenges viewers to contemplate the tension between architectural development and preservation.

"Being a young architect, made me contemplate the balance and tension between this development and preservation. I hope this work could really deliver a constructive message and have some effect on the developing industries and the people as a community. This way we can improve and extend our understanding of heritage, history, and cultural contexts in our part of the continent."

Charlene Almarvez Embodies The Idea Of “Borderless”

Ten years after she moved from Laguna, Philippines to New York, USA, the model reflects on her journey and life.

“It was a big change growing up in the province surrounded by family and then having to live alone in New York. My family and I have a very close relationship so it was hard for me. Meeting different people from different backgrounds opened my eyes to the world. And that made me realize that there’s so much more I still need to learn. Living alone taught me independence and the importance of being proactive. In a job that judged me at every inch, it’s natural to have insecurities and doubts but instead, it helped me discover more of myself and made me grow to love who I am even more.”
