Join us Tuesday, the 20th!

Talk term? "Enslaved Americans" replaced American slaves. Is this a REAL change in thinking or a version of WOKEness? This is discussed on Race Talks this February with the theme: Celebration Black History Month.

The RACE TALKS team has a ton of "fun" facts--with Guest TALKer, Heidi Hill in the studio! Enjoy our Roundtable Talk on why it is important to highlight the lesser-known, enslaved Americans who had a hand in building our country. Just how inventive were these Americans of whose shoulders we stand? Let's play Race Talks Jeopardy!

This month, host Kimberly Y. Erwin seeks to share much of what is still little known about the enslaved American. The population formerly referred to as American Slaves has enriched America in so many invaluable ways. Few have achieved their place in the historical spotlight, until now.

This month's word on RACE TALKS? Social Construct. People mention it when talking about "race," but what does it mean?
A "social construct" refers to an idea, concept, or phenomenon that is created and maintained by society rather than being a natural or inherent part of the world. It is a product of collective human understanding and agreement, shaping our perception and interpretation of various aspects of life. The idea is to highlight how our understanding of the world is influenced by collective human beliefs and agreements rather than objective, universal truths. By recognizing these constructs, we can better understand and, if necessary, challenge and change the societal norms and structures that may perpetuate inequalities or biases.

This concept can be applied in the following ways:

1. **Gender Identity**: Gender is often used as an example of a social construct.
2. **Race and Ethnicity**: Race is another example of a social construct. You can explain that racial categories are not based on inherent genetic differences but are labels assigned by society.
3. **Social Hierarchies**
4. **Norms and Values**
5. **Institutions**: Institutions like marriage, government, and even social media platforms like Facebook are social constructs that are created and maintained by society.
6. **Identity and Self-Concept**: Social constructs influence our identity and self-concept. Event labels like "student," "parent," "activist," or "artist" are constructs that affect how we perceive ourselves and how others see us.

📣 Tonight is the night we've been waiting for!

Host of RACE TALKS, Kimberly Y. Erwin, is LIVE at 7pm on WGXC 90.7FM https://wavefarm.org/radio/wgxc/schedule/m6dphe for a very special episode!

TALK Term is "Affirmative Action." Find out how this term MATTERS. Especially, it matters to the Guest TALKer, Kemoy Briscoe, a higher education administrator who worked in Higher Education Opportunity Programs offices in notable colleges in New York State. As a mother of two young African American children, Kemoy will tout her beliefs on whether or not the demise of the policy that may have affected her choice in colleges may indeed affect the future choices of her children. The Theme: "The Future of Our Youth" will be of interest to every parent of future college-bound "black and brown youth."

Also included in this packed evening is the premier of a Jeopardy-like battle with the naming of ethnic "FIRSTS ." Our Former WGXC host, Garrett Roche of The Roche Solid Truth podcast (www.therochesolidtruth.com) is slated to join the competition with the purpose of gaining financial support for the station's summer fundraising campaign.

Can you say, "SUSTAINING SUPPORTER?" Well, if you don't guess right, you may choose to be one--for as little as $5 a month! How else can you learn how "ALL words maTTEr"!

RACE: A Binding Illusion is the theme of January's Race Talks® on WGXC.org this Tuesday, a day after the MLK, Jr. Day celebration.

What might these words inspire? "Binding Illusion?" As it alludes to 'race' we can very clearly surmise that it is an UNTRUTH to say that there is anything but one, human race. How does it bind?

We say it and are educated in our glossary's at schools and on forms when we answer questions like that on the census. RACE is STILL here, but both Kimberly Erwin and Joanne Louis-Paul seek to unwrap the idiocy of forever EVER referring to people of varying ethnic make-ups and identities as anything akin to a separate 'race.'

Codeswitching is what we all do...gender, age, culture, ethnic identity, position of authority, roles...we all "play" some role in life at different times and with different people, in different arenas.

Codeswitching is a positive occurrence. Just recognize THAT you are doing it and the appropriateness of the responses should let you know if you were successful at it! 😘

INDIGENOUS

Did you know we are *celebrating DIWALI (pronounced: Dee-Vah-Lee) in America now? Diwali is the Hindu's Celebration of Light. The celebration is brought to the US by "Indians." Not those "indigenous" to the U.S. but from India.

https://www.hinduamerican.org/diwali-toolkit?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&gclid=CjwKCAjwtKmaBhBMEiwAyINuwAUlCduD6-f01D4rDE6QAHCmTCFm3EuEMaIyBTaZxUE_ItevlIjxCRoCEc0QAvD_BwE

This comes on the heels of recognizing Christopher Columbus Day as "Indigenous" People's Day.

What does it mean to be "Indigenous?" (Share YOUR thoughts below.)

Dictionary Definition: (from Oxford Languages)
"originating or occurring naturally in a particular place; native."

*CELEBRATE DIWALI (for four days) starting October 24th!

Diwali is a Hindu festival that is celebrated every year on the 15th day of the month of Kartik in the Hindu calendar (October or November on the Western calendar).

The N' word. Let's TALK about it. Kids are using it. They learned it from US.

We are of the generation that weren't part of the Civil Rights Movement. We were standing on the shoulders of those that were. How have we failed?

What must THEY now do to succeed. Question: Will they try? Have they the same "dream?"
