In 1992, after the Rodney King-verdict, a week of protests, rioting and looting overtook the city of Los Angeles. In The Last of the Son, these real historical events serve as the backdrop of the story of a group of people who are trying to make sense of their own lives, personalities, struggles, relationships amidst one of the most prolific social and racially tense moments in American history.

OPEN ARTIST CALL!! The Garden of Voices presents... an artist gallery alongside our weekend production of "The Last of the Son" by Cris Eli Blak. Artists from around the city may submit a vendor application to sell art pieces in the Five Angels Theater in Manhattan, NY from February 24-26, 2023.
The production interrogates themes related to Blackness, Latinidad, and the Asian American experience within the context of the 1992 Rodney King riots, so artists who identify with those experiences are encouraged to apply! There is no vendor fee, but The Garden of Voices will commission 10% from all sales made. Visit the gardenofvoice.com/landing-page (linked in bio) to fill out an application!

Happy Black History month from the Garden of Voices. We begin this month with a recognition of our mourning- we mourn yet another victim of militarized, state sanctioned violence. On this first of February we honor the memory of Tyre Nichols, whom his wife described as a “good spirit and soul and calm presence.” Nichols was a photographer and an avid skateboarder, so naturally we have to share some of his art with you. The pieces featured here can be found on his website which we’ve linked in our bio. And finally, on this February 1st, we also honor the birthday of Langston Hughes with a poem that speaks volumes to this moment. It also speaks to a simple theme of our upcoming production of “The Last of the Son” by Cris Eli Blak.
In his poem “Wake” Hughes writes: “Tell all my mourners to mourn in red- cause there ain’t no sense in my being dead.” So many black lives are lost senselessly to the police presence in our country. Black communities remain overpoliced decades after videos of Rodney King’s beating broadcasted to the world, and namely to his community in Los Angeles. As similar violent images of Tyre Nichols circulate, we remind you of his humanity, his community he’s been forced to leave behind, and his creative spirit.

Cynthia Babak (she/her) is an actor, playwright, director and deviser. She is a core member of Hook & Eye Theater Co. (She, She, She; God is a Verb; The Summoners), and a founding member of Brave New World Rep. (director: The American Clock and Fabulation). Her play, Where I Dwell, has been workshopped at Florida Rep, and her play Life and Death and In-Between has been workshopped at Hudson Theatre Works. After a long, successful career as a magazine editor, Cathy Cavender remembered that she loved to sing and act. Several years and many classes and lessons later, here she is. Along the way, she performed in original works at The Tank, Manhattan Repertory Theatre and NY Theater Summerfest. She appeared in various musicals at Curtain Call in Stamford, Ct., played Cinderella’s Mother in Into the Woods at Musicals at Richter in Danbury, CT, and Nana in Tuck Everlasting at White Plains Performing Arts Center, Stage 2. With Village Light Opera Group, she’s appeared in Ragtime and Anything Goes, and played Ma Strong in Urinetown, a favorite. On-camera experiences include independent productions, many student films (often playing “Jen’s Mom”), commercials, and two Investigation Discovery murder re-enactments (once where she played Dead Jen’s Mom). She’s sung at cabaret venues in NYC and Connecticut and until Covid, was a singer in the Linda Ronstadt tribute band, “Different Drum.” This is her second appearance with The Garden of Voices, having played Mary in “Bill and Mary’s Pandemic” last winter.
