NIGERIA: MONETARY POLICY

Monetary policy needs thorough housecleaning. The Central Bank must work towards a unified exchange rate. This will direct funds away from arbitrage into meaningful investment in the plant, equipment, and jobs that power the real economy.

Interest rates need to be reduced to increase investment and consumer purchasing in ways that sustain the economy at a high level.

Whatever merits it had in concept, the currency swap was too harshly applied by the CBN given the number of unbanked Nigerians. The policy shall be reviewed. In the meantime, my administration will treat both currencies as legal tender.

Dangote Industries deserves praise for its excellent refinery.

We congratulate Dangote, Nigeria, and Africa.

Special thanks to Aliko Dangote for this vision and for going above and beyond. He has succeeded against all obstacles for the good of the nation and the continent.

I respect people who build, like Dangote, but I admire those who acquire.

People presume that Dangote already had the resources necessary to construct the refinery. I can comprehend. Few people have this level of engineering and understanding of project financing.

Once more, congratulations to Dangote, Nigeria, and Africa. We are all grateful.

ABUJA: NDLEA busts co***ne warehouse, seizes N193billion worth of crack in Lagos Arrests 4 drug barons, 1 other

In what appears to be the biggest singular co***ne seizure in the history of Nigeria’s premier anti-narcotic agency, operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, have busted a major warehouse in a secluded estate in Ikorodu area of Lagos where 1.8tons (1,855 kilograms) of the illicit drug worth more than Two Hundred and Seventy Eight Million Two Hundred and Fifty Thousand Dollars ($278, 250,000) equivalent of about One Hundred and Ninety Four Billion, Seven Hundred and Seventy Five Million (N194, 775,000,000) Naira in street value were seized.

At least, four drug barons including a Jamaican and the warehouse manager have been arrested in the well coordinated and intelligence led operation that lasted two days across different locations in Lagos state. Kingpins of the co***ne cartel in custody include: Messrs Soji Jibril, 69, an indigene of Ibadan, Oyo state; Emmanuel Chukwu, 65, who hails from Ekwulobia, Anambra state; Wasiu Akinade, 53, from Ibadan, Oyo state; Sunday Oguntelure, 53, from Okitipupa, Ondo state and Kelvin Smith, 42, a native of Kingston, Jamaica. They are all members of an international drug syndicate that the Agency has been trailing since 2018.

Located at 6 Olukuola crescent, Solebo estate, Ikorodu, the warehouse was raided on Sunday 18th September, 2022, while the barons were picked from hotels and their hideouts in different parts of Lagos between Sunday night and Monday 19th September.

Preliminary investigation reveals the class A drugs were warehoused in the residential estate from where the cartel was trying to sell them to buyers in Europe, Asia and other parts of the world. They were stored in 10 travel bags and 13 drums.

While commending all the officers and men of the Agency involved in the extensive investigation including those of the American Drug Enforcement Administration, (US-DEA), Chairman/Chief Executive of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd) said the bust is a historical blow to the drug cartels and a strong warning that they’ll all go down if they fail to realise that the game has changed.

GUNMEN KILL WIFE OF ENUGU VIGILANTE OPERATIVE
September 11th

Residents of Umuopu community in Enugu Ezike, Igboeze-Eorth Local Government Area of Enugu State were thrown into mourning at the weekend over the murder of the wife of a well known vigilante leader Akada by gunmen.

The incident occurred three weeks after a commander of Umuopu community vigilance group Levi was shot dead by a group of hoodlums in the area..

The deceased, Ogochukwu Onuh, was shot dead on Friday night when his husband escaped from the assailants.

According to reports, the gunmen attacked Akada’s home but he managed to escape while his wife was shot.

She was rushed to the hospital but did not survive.

It was gathered that the deceased’s husband had been the reason the community had not been totally conquered by gunmen, who operate in the name of secessionist agitations.

A village source told our correspondent that Akada and other security operatives in the village were being accused of sabotaging the efforts of the gunmen in making the area their permanent camp.

“Severally, Akada, the late Levi and some other vigilante members have been attacked. We know the police know these hoodlums terrorising this community and the entire Enugu Ezike. But the police themselves seem to be afraid.

“A few occasions soldiers came to raid their hideouts. They didn’t do good job because they only seemed to have come to inform the hoodlums that they were on their way coming. Of course, the guys escaped from bush.

“Since that time a few of these vigilante men have been operating alone. That’s why their houses are being set ablaze while members of their families are constantly living in fear,” a village source said.

While lamenting that many residents have fled, the villagers called on the state government to do something about the situation to avoid the area being turned into an ungovernable space.
