Our journey together began meeting at a mutual friends birthday party on a beach in Vietnam. We ended up playing a game and being on the same team and won. Ever since then we've been building a life together and growing.

We both have always loved traveling and exploring the world, but deep down we've both always dreamed of living a sustainable life off grid way before meeting. So when we made the decision to make the move. To some it seemed foolish but for us it is literally a dream come true. We're very outdoorsy and find true fulfillment with hands on things and building something ourselves.

I can say for sure we never thought it would be in Japan and never planned on living here to be honest. But COVID changed everything and made us rethink our off grid dream. Making us realize we're actually blessed to be able to have this lifestyle In the mountains of Japan.

We're super stoked to see what we can create here. Sometimes we fail, sometimes we make something beautiful, but no matter what happens, it's Ours. 🥰

More photos from the archives in our house of people from our village back in the day. We've tried to find family members to pass these to since the previous owner passed away earlier this year. But no one to give them to do we just have to keep and cherish this piece of history.
There's no way we can throw this out!

There's so much to discover when living in nature. The more modern we become the less we connect with this energy and eachother. We depend on these modern comforts making ourselves believe the more fancy tech we have is the "normal" way of life.

There's just something about being able to tell the time of year by the trees and bugs around. Nature is peaceful but its not quite. The sounds of animals, birds and wind through the trees is better than city noise any day to us.

We all define our happy place differently, but never let the world or these distractions in it make you forget where that is. 💓

This is probably the coolest find in the house so far. We came across a few black and white photo albums that really take you back into time. This is just a few photos, will post more later.

These photos are from world War ll Era. How crazy and beautiful is this!!

The last photo of the nine men. This is the 9th navel group. The pilots that fought in from Pearl Harbour. Mind blown!!! So amazing to find a piece of history like this in your own home.

This process is hard work and so much fun transforming this house into something we will call our home. It definitely isn't perfect and we have made a lot of mistakes and learning along the way. But in the end it will all be worth it!

This is a lifestyle we have both wanted for so long. Some people think we're crazy getting a house we have to remodel every room but We like to get our hands dirty and create things in our own image.

This is exactly our kind of vibe! We never get bored and are always busy in the mountains. Traveling for the last few years none stop has been a awesome ride but we all need a place to call home. With all we've witnessed in different countries tries with their beautiful architecture on how they build homes. We'll mix many different styles that we love. Can't wait to see the end result! 🥰

I feel like every time we step out the mountains change and shows us some new beauty. It's like a continuous discovery mode that never turns off.

Today we went mountain forgeing for vegetables with one of our local friends. The energy here is just so welcoming and peaceful. Every day we are happier to have this lifestyle and working hard to make things perfect!

We're trying all the tips and tricks people recommend to us for our garden that are natural ways.

For example adding rosemary to out tomatoes and other companion planting. Also this copper coil wire. We're still both very amateur in the gardening game.

So if you have any gardens and have some tips we would love to hear about them? 😄

We're also extending the greenhouse to apart of the porch for now. We will definitely build a much better and nicer one on the side of the house but we have wayy to many things to do before that project.

How cool is this! We have so much things we need to get rid of so the first round is all about repurposing things. In this plant nursery/anti animal project. Ikumi took two old doors from the house and turned it into a little enclosed temporary small greenhouse. 😍

This is actually Joshua's first time seeing cherry blossoms. He left last year after our camper van trip and missed it. Normally he drives when we go out but this time he pulled over and switched and made me drive because he was too distracted by the flowers.

With only 2 weeks a year to see them in full bloom, they truly are special and breathtaking if you're in the right place. Luckily we live near a very famous location of a cherry blossom park!

Spring is coming and we ain't playing around with our garden this year! Super excited because I've never had a garden before and just the thought of being able to get vegetables we want without going to the store makes us feel happy.

It will definitely be a learning curve on how to have a garden and we're both new to it, but you can't live off grid without! Not only do we plan to grow vegetables, but since we're in a cedar tree forest here in the mountains. We'll also plant some flowers to add a splash of color around Here 😉

Interesting fact about this area of Japan that we live in. In 1180 the Taira clan had supreme power ruling Japan and had 1000s of samurai under their command. Their biggest rival the Minamoto clan defeated them in what is known as the Genpei war and in subjugation of eastern Japan for 5 years.

After that defeat the samurai who survived the war scattered around Japan to hide. A large group of them came to our mountain area to hide from being executed. Higher ranked samurai lived at the top of the mountain to get more sun while the lower ranked samurai lived in the lower parts of the mountain.

The story of our village is the children of those samurai through the generations of living in the mountainous forest buildt this village that we live in.

Coming from a country that only has a 250 year history. Its intriguing and beautiful living somewhere that has over 2000 years of stories as a nation. We have trees around here older than the United States.

Ikumi met a fisherman on her way home that found this while fishing and gifted it to her. How freaking cool is this! Definitely going up in my mancave/hobby room that I will build.

This only happens in the countryside Life. This lifestyle is not for most people and temporarily enjoyed by others. For us, we live and love this lifestyle daily! Can't wait to see what else we find.

This baby took 3 days to cure and smoked for 8 hours. Came out great for a trial run. Who wants some!? 😋😋

One of our new local friends is called Takasho, which means falconer. He hunts with falcons. He only catches deer to feed his birds.

To welcome us to the community, He cut the best parts of the deer (thighs and tender loins) he caught and gifted it to Ikumi and I. So we just cut it up to store in the deep freezer for later.

We're getting better at using all the meat since it'd so much with every catch. With this batch we will make hamburger meat, smoked, Jerky, bone broth and steaks.

So happy to be surrounded by so many cool people with all kinds of interesting backgrounds!

Anyone else love boar as much as we do? We're finding new hobbies to keep us busy living remotely. One of my main ones is smoking freshly caught wild game meat from the mountains. This is the test run of curing boar meat with salt for 3 days then smoking this big boy using Sakura wood from our area.

I've used Sakura wood to smoke deer and it gives it a nice hint of sweet flavor. Excited to try it with boar!

We were a bit hesitant pulling down the ceiling upstairs not knowing the condition it was in. But we were definitely pleasantly surprised! We still have a ways to go but once it's all said and done it will make our bedroom feel so much bigger and homey. But so far so good, fingers crossed 🤞

We literally had two cars full of blankets clearing out the house. 😅 but luckily they're all finally gone!

Such a beautiful setting but our only concern is black bears. Not something we're immediately worried about but considering we want to grow vegetables and fruits in our village. It's something always at the back of my mind.

It's super hard to get a gun license out here so at first we will rely on motion sensored lights and Maybe even a dog 🐕. But luckily the villagers have said they've only seen a bear like twice in 60 years. But the second time was recently and it was 2 cubs 😕.

Anyone down to try grilled snake? The kids did so you can’t back out! 🤣. Not something we ever thought we would. But one of the villagers has been hunting and eating snake for a long time and wanted us to try. I’m not going to lie, it was delicious!

But it reminds me of eating crawfish, so much work for so little meat. We’d rather let them be because of that. But it was a wonderful experience. Even better blowing the kids minds when eating a snake.

I love hanging out with my nephews. It’s so inspiring to me hearing him trying to speak English to me and it makes me want to learn Japanese even more so we can have a real conversation.

If you told me 5 years ago I would be married to a beautiful Japanese women living in Japan I would have laughed and said, sureee.

I’m so happy the way my life is going and can’t wait to build our sustainable future in the mountains surrounded by nature. 🥰❤️

When you ask your nephew to draw a picture of you and the family. At least he got the batman tattoo right. 🤣🤣

I haven't lived in snow like this since Boston! This is ikumis first time living somewhere that's snowing like this. She's from Japan but has been living abroad in different countries since a teen. We're truly snowbirds and normally leave a country when it starts snowing like this.

But since we're committed to living in Japan now we have to get used to this. Currently stocking up on winter gear preparing for winter. But we still enjoy the change in scenery in the same environment.

As people that love change, you can't go wrong with having four seasons! And coming from Florida where it looks the same all year and flat, I can't get over Japan's mountains and beauty! 😍❤️

We love natural Onsen in Japan, there’s something so rejuvenating about the mineral water that relaxes you! We try to go when we can but sometimes it’s hard.

Historically, Japan has always associated tattoos with yakuza and being a troublemaker. Till this day, most Onsen do not allow people with tattoos to enter. So we have to rent a private family Onsen or Ikumi’s normally goes alone.

Coming from a culture where tattoos are normal. It kinda sucks not being to go to them as often as I would like. But you know what they say, it is what it is. Yet, still an interesting fun fact.
