Our very first podcast guest, Venerable Robina Courtin, is back in today’s timely episode on how to deal with the despair and hopelessness many people feel today about war, injustice, inequity, and the environment! Venerable Robina was ordained as a Buddhist nun in the late 1970s. She’s worked closely with her teachers Lama Thubten Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche, to help spread Buddhist wisdom as an Editorial Director of Wisdom Publications, Editor of Mandala Magazine, Executive Director of Liberation Prison Project, and the lively, charismatic touring teacher of Buddhism.

For anyone who's been enjoying my new book, How to Train a Happy Mind, or A Skeptic's Path to Enlightenment's podcast, community, and classes where I developed its meditations, you might be interested in a special opportunity coming up this summer. From August 8-11, I’m leading an in-person three-day retreat at California’s Vajrapani Institute. There, in the heart of the redwood forest, we’ll go through all of the analytical meditation topics from the book, one by one. I’ll give lectures and guide meditations on each topic, and we’ll also have plenty of time for questions and group discussions. In between sessions you’ll enjoy delicious vegetarian meals and walks in the forest. All the funds raised from the retreat go to support the nonprofit Vajrapani Institute. Science has greater and greater mastery in understanding and controlling physical cause and effect, from planets to particles, but we are only starting to understand cause and effect in our minds. Evolution, habits, and society all affect our behavior. How do we gain conscious control of our behavior, much less our thoughts? One method is a daily practice of self-appreciation and self-forgiveness that lets us release regret and pain to face each day with renewed presence and joy. Listen now to this week's re-recorded and remastered episode, Mental Cause and Effect!

"I think the most important way we fight, to not add more fuel on the fire, is using mindfulness and compassion. Aggression comes when we expect the change to happen now. This is our habit. It’s important to invest into the cause 100 percent and then let go. Right now there’s a vicious cycle. If we all united, invest into the cause, and let’s allow, I think there will be less separating 'us' and 'them' and less blaming games. We invest all the energy into the cause." - Yangsi Rinpoche

If you're struggling to maintain your meditation routine, try cutting back your time on the cushion. In the beginning, it is more important to establish the habit—even it it's just 5 or 10 minutes a day—than forcing yourself into long meditation sessions.

We cling to things as if they won’t change, but change is the nature of reality. When we embrace impermanence, we prepare ourselves for big changes, and are able to let go of our fear and anxiety to become more fully present to those around us, to make the most meaningful choices day-to-day, and to more deeply appreciate life’s fleeting pleasures. Learn more in this week's episode, Embracing Impermanence!
