The Saint Calls 25 Scorpions for Dubai Camp, All Whites Test

Tom Saintfiet has called a 25-man squad for Gambia’s training camp in Dubai and an international friendly with New Zealand on November 16.

This will be the final camp before the pre-AFCON training camp ahead of the biannual continental showpiece event. The delayed AFCON gets underway in Cameroon on January 9 with debutants Gambia grouped against Tunisia, Mali and Mauritania.

Two players missed out from the group that participated in last month’s camp in Morocco in Modou Barrow and Bubacarr Jobe for quarantine rules and work permit issues respectively. Hamza Barry remains a long-term absence as he continues his recovery from a serious injury.

In their places is the return of FC Spezia’s wing wizard Ebrima Colley who recovered from the injury that ruled him out of the aforesaid camp. Colley is in great form for his Italian Serie A side and his inclusion will offer the Belgian a lot of pace and trickery on the right side of midfield. Mohammed Mbye has also been recalled The Saint.

The All Whites, twice World Cup finalists in 1982 and 2010 in South Africa, are 111 on the current FIFA Rankings, 36 places above The Gambia who are 147. They are hoping to make another appearance in Qatar in 2022.

Breaking News: GAP Secretary General Musa Yali Batchilly Endorses President Barrow, Below is his statement.

Your Excellency, President Barrow, Cabinet members here present, distinguished guests and members or the media please, I stand before you this evening honored by the support and privilege accorded to me by the president of this great nation of The Gambia, to enter into an alliance with the mighty NPP and make way for I and my supporters to join the formidable and unstoppable coalition bus that will see the continuation of extraordinary progress and development of President Barrows administration in this our beloved Gambia.

I, Ayatollah Servant Musa Ousainou Yali Batchilly and my supporters are very cognizant of the unprecedented development that have taken place over the last four incredible years and the full assurance of the prospects of a bright future for the county and people’s of The Gambia.

Today, I and my supporters have come together to show and give unprecedented support to His Excellency President Adama Barrow in his bid to run for reelection as leader of our wonderful country The Gambia.

The Gambia is at a crossroad. No elections in our country’s political history has been this important. We are faced with a hard choice of progress or retrogression, development or stagnation, peace or war and hardship or prosperity. The choice before all of us is clear and I being a person of foresight and character, have identified beyond all measures, that the development and action oriented bus of President Barrow , is the clear choice and I have so chosen.

I am confident that if Gambians give President Barrow another mandate to steer the affairs of their great country, he will again usher in a breath of fresh air to our economy, provide even more opportunities for the youths and ensure that the average Gambian lives a prosperous and dignified life.

Under the dynamic leadership of President Barrow, our sovereignty will be respected. The Gambia will continue to earn the respect and be a source of admiration to other nations and the international community as a whole. I am certain that if President Barrow is given another opportunity to serve, The Gambia will attain never before seen development and new heights of national progress.

The bus is moving at an exponential speed, it takes a man of knowledge and wisdom to control the steering wheel of such a bus and that bus driver is no other than the formidable and inspirational President Adama Barrow.

Our vision is clear. Our objective is the same. Our collective desire is to see a United and prosperous Gambia where Mandinka and Fula, Sarahule and Wollof, Manjago and Serer, Aku and Jola will join hands together with all other ethnic groups to strive towards the common good. For in doing so, we are undoubtedly assured, that the great God of nations, will keep us to The Gambia ever true.

AYATOLLAH MUSA OUSAINOU YALI BATCHILLY.

The Gambia reach first Nations Cup as five teams qualify

The Africa Cup of Nations trophy
The Gambia qualified for their first ever Africa Cup of Nations tournament when beating Angola 1-0 at home, joining Comoros, Gabon, Ghana and Egypt in qualifying on Thursday.

Assan Ceesay scored the all-important matchwinner after an hour, enabling The Gambia to clinch one of the two places from Group D.
The other slot was secured by Gabon who beat DR Congo 3-0 to ensure that they return to the finals after missing out on the 2019 edition.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Denis Bouanga and Aaron Boupendza scored the goals for the Panthers.
The Congolese, meanwhile, miss out for the first time since 2012, having appeared at the last four tournaments.

Elsewhere, Egypt drew 1-1 in Kenya to secure the point they needed in Group G to qualify for the finals in Cameroon.

The Pharaohs now have nine points, level with Comoros, while Kenya move up to four and join Togo, who have just the two, in being eliminated with one round of games still to go.

Egypt opened the scoring in Nairobi after just two minutes through playmaker Magdi Afsha before Abdallah Hassan equalised midway through the second half for the hosts.

Comoros qualified earlier on Thursday when drawing 0-0 at home to Togo to also reach their first Nations Cup finals.

Teams that have never reached the tournament before have profited from the decision to expand the Nations Cup from a 16-team event to one featuring 24 teams for the 2019 finals onwards.

Reaching the finals has rarely been a problem for Ghana who drew 1-1 in South Africa to make it through from Group C.

Mohammed Kudus gave Ghana, playing at the stadium where they lost their infamous 2010 World Cup quarter-final against Uruguay, 180 seconds into the second half with Percy Tau replying just four minutes later.

The Black Stars - who have contested all but one of the last 15 tournaments - move up to ten points, level with South Africa who travel to Sudan, who have nine points, on the sixth and final day.
With Ghana having a better head-to-head record against both the Sudanese and Bafana Bafana, there is no scenario whereby the four-time African champions cannot go through.

Half the teams at next year's finals are now known with Comoros, Gabon, The Gambia, Ghana and Egypt joining Algeria, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali, Senegal, Tunisia and hosts Cameroon in January's tournament.

GFF President Congratulates Gambia on Winning Bronze

The President of The Gambia Football Federation (GFF), Mr. Lamin Kaba Bajo, on Friday congratulated the Young Scorpions for a remarkable achievement in winning the third/fourth place playoffs against Tunisia at the Africa U-20 Cup of Nations in Mauritania.

Mr. Bajo made these remarks at the team’s hotel in Nouakchott shortly after the match. “On behalf of The Gambia Football Federation and football lovers in The Gambia, we sincerely applaud your efforts in reaching here. Everyone at home is aware of the consistency and improvement that you’ve shown throughout the tournament and they’re all ready to once again welcome you back home in celebration,” he said.

While acknowledging the potentials in the team, Mr. Bajo assured that the Federation will not relent in its efforts to create the enabling environment for the players to develop and help them become professional footballers and represent the country at the highest level.

“You have a bright career ahead of you and I’m sure very soon you’ll be playing at other clubs and we will be giving all the necessary support along your journey,” Mr. Bajo said, urging the players to be focused and more determined while putting country first as patriotic players. He also thanked the Coach and his technicians as well as the delegation headed by the Second Vice President Mr. Ebou Faye and the Ministry of Youth and Sports for a collective effort.

Speaking on behalf of the Ministry, the Executive Director of the National Sports Council, Mr. Marcel Mendy applauded the great enthusiasm showed by the team while acknowledging the chemistry amongst the players and staff. He also reminded the team that a great compensatory reward awaits them upon return to Banjul.

Head Coach Mattar M’Boge expressed gratitude to the Federation and the Ministry of Youth and Sports for their relentless support to get to this point, which he described as phenomenal.

At the end of the event, the team observed a minute silence in memory of fallen legends Alhaji Momodou Njie (Biri Biri), Peter Bonu Johnson, Ousman Saho and Sulayman Kuyateh.

Gambia Eyes Bronze After Ghana Defeat

Young Scorpions will be hoping to better their best performance at the African U-20 Cup of Nations when they face off with Tunisia in the third and fourth place playoffs on Friday.

Having narrowly lost 1-0 to Ghana, courtesy of Precious Boah’s 39th minute free-kick, the Gambians will equal their best ever finish in this competition with victory over Tunisia in the playoffs. They were third place finishers at the 2007 edition in Congo Brazzaville.

Speaking at a post-match press conference following today’s 1-0 defeat to the Black Satellites, Coach Matarr M’Boge was contended with the overall performance of his team in the tournament, noting that the platform has created an opportunity to show to the continent and the world that The Gambia has talent.

A place in the semifinals would’ve secured Gambia’s appearance at the 2021 U-20 World Cup in Indonesia but following the cancellation of that tournament by FIFA due to the Covid19 pandemic, this current group have been deprived of the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of the 2007 generation and showcase their talent at the global stage.

Describing the decision to cancel the competition as a shame, M’Boge is still hoping that the world football governing body would reconsider their decision to ensure that Africa’s four semifinalists are given the opportunity to showcase what they are made of, an opinion he shared with his Ghanaian counterpart Abdul Karim Zito.

“Just sad that the pandemic has forced FIFA to cancel the World Cup. I just can only appeal that maybe FIFA or the organizers can reconsider because if it was still the case, we would be going to the World Cup and for a country like ourselves, our players would love to showcase at that stage. We wanted to get to the finals too, we wanted to represent our country at that stage but hats off to Ghana,” M’Boge lamented.

“We wanted to increase the level of play we did in the first encounter but they came up with a game plan to contain us. Honestly, a team that kept winning and all the successes we’ve had to get here, beating big teams, other teams start to notice you and they start to change their game plan because of the damage we’ve caused them. So, I’m proud of my boys because if we didn’t beat Ghana in the first place we wouldn’t be here.”

Despite the win, Ghana Coach Zito recognized the Young Scorpions as one of the best teams in the tournament. “Look, let’s be honest Gambia is one of the best teams in this competition. We played Cameroon until extra time and eventually won but I was not tired in all the games we played than when playing against The Gambia,” he added.

M’Boge: CAR Thumping Perfect Response to recent ordeals

Gambia Coach Matarr M’Boge has remarked that yesterday’s emphatic 3-0 3-0 defeat of the Central African Republic is the perfect response to the demise of our great football icons in the last few months.

The Young Scorpions secured a place in the semifinals of the Total Africa U-20 Nations Cup on Friday with a big statement performance and in the process became the only side to win a quarterfinal encounter in regulation time at the Mauritania championship.

Wally Fofana opened the scoring after just 4 minutes when he got on the end of a beautiful combination of football involving fullback Ba Lamin Sowe, man-of-the-match Lamarana Jallow and Kajally Drammeh. Striker Momodou Bojang finished the game as a contest in the 49th minute before substitute Alieu Barry completed the scoring to cap off a perfect night of scintillating football full of tricks and a dazzling array of beautiful play from the Young Scorpions.

Speaking at a post-match press conference, M’Boge highlighted that the victory was motivated by so many reasons in Gambian football. “These past days, we’ve been in difficult situations to be honest, mentally, but these boys, they continue to make me proud each time we are faced with challenges. They have a mental strength that keeps them focused on the positives of every situation. We lost a great comrade and Coach in Sulayman Kuyateh yesterday and one would have thought that this would seriously dampen our focus and game but I told them the best way to pay tribute to the lost legends; Saul Kuyateh, Bonu Johnson, and Biri Biri is to win this match,” a visibly joyful Matarr said.

“The GFF President has also supported us with a comfortable accommodation and so the boys agreed that they’ll have their own way to say thank you to him; so, this victory is for them [the leadership of the Federation] and every Gambian who’s felt the dark times we’re faced with as a country.”

The Gambian will now face off against Ghana on Monday at 4pm for a place in the finals. The furthest the Young Scorpions’ went in this category is a third-place finish at their debut championship in Congo Brazzaville in 2007 and following a 2-1 come-from-behind win over their semifinal opponents in the group stages, the Gambians will be hopeful of going one step better with a place in the next weekend’s finals.

However, M’Boge is not one to be complacent and stated that his team is always focused on the next task ahead, noting that they are aware of the strength of the Ghanaian team who are three times African champions and the only World Cup winners from our continent. “For us we just take it game by game. We are just going to concentrate on the semifinal match and make sure we win for the finals,” M’Boge buttressed.

For his part, Lamarana Jallow, who was voted man-of-the-match for the second consecutive match applauded the efforts of his teammates and coach. He expressed delight in winning the MOTM award, noting that he’ll continue to give his best for the country and fans.

Young Scorpions Gaffer Eyes CAR Win

Young Scorpions Mattar M’Boge has remarked that his side is aware of the strong teams in the quarterfinals of the U-20 Cup of Nations but their objective is to go and win the next match against the Central Africa Republic on Friday.

M’Boge, who was speaking in a pre-match press conference ahead of the 7pm kickoff, also pointed out that all the games they’ve had since the beginning of the competition has been very tough and that’s an added advantage to his side.

“They’re a strong team but we cannot also hide that we’re the favorites. It brings pressure in terms of the result. So, we have to come and play with a strong mentality and respect Central Africa. Clearly, our objective is to win and advance further,” he asserted.

M’Boge further stated that his first ambition is to develop the young players to get to the peak of their careers. “Honestly, my first objective is to develop these players. I want to help them to get to another level, to the highest level, that’s my first job. So, we just try to put them in the best position for them to excel and give their best, and once the team performs then the results come.”

He also applauded the level of performance and enthusiasm displayed by the players while stating that they’ll remain humble and apply the tactical approaches instilled in them during training sessions.

The Scorpions gaffer also acknowledged and commended The Gambia Football Federation President Mr. Lamin Kaba Bajo for his timely intervention to accommodate the team at the MauriCenter Hotel in Nouakchott.

Speaking on behalf of the players, Lamarana Jallow stated that they are fully prepared and ready to give out their best to win the match.
