Artistic Experimentation and Dialogue at the ICA at VCU: An Interview with Dominic Willsdon and David Riley

The Institute for Contemporary Art (ICA) at VCU is dedicated to fostering experimentation and dialogue within the realm of contemporary art. With a strong emphasis on engaging with current issues and trends, the ICA is a driving force in the Richmond arts conversation, particularly in its role as a bridge between VCU and the Broad Street Arts District.

In this interview, we speak with Executive Director Dominic Willsdon and Assistant Curator of Performance David Riley about their roles at the ICA and the organization's mission.

Dominic shares his background in the arts, having previously worked at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the ICA in London, UK, and explains why the multidisciplinary approach of the ICA format appeals to him.

David, who has a background in the underground music scene in Richmond, discusses his role in curating performance programming and the challenges of choosing and reaching out to artists who align with the ICA's mission.

RVA SHOWS YOU MUST SEE THIS WEEK:
JANUARY 11 – JANUARY 17

⭐ FEATURED SHOW ⭐
Saturday, January 14, 7 PM

Last Minute Fest II, feat. The Mitras, Mad Abbey, Pipesleeve, Overunderdog, Sifter, Stevie Ashe
@ The Camel – $10 in advance, $12 day of show

It’s officially a new year, but I always take a little while to adjust. I don’t know about y’all, but I’ll still probably be writing the wrong year on things in March. One thing that does remind me that it is for-sure a new year, though, is when another anniversary comes around. For a bad example, the second anniversary of that whole stupid January 6 mess was a few days ago. And for a much better example, The Mitras are about to throw another Last Minute Fest, on the anniversary of the first one. And this time, while it is still coming together last-minute, it feels a lot more planned out — which surely means it’ll be even better than the first one!

Honestly, the first Last Minute Fest was the first thing that really made me notice The Mitras. A relatively new Richmond band at the time, they had to deal with the fact that two other bands had dropped off a show they’d booked at The Camel, and they were the only band left. Rather than wandering away with their tails between their legs, they just called every Richmond band they could think of, and ended up turning the evening into a nine-band event with less than two weeks notice. That kind of moxie was more than enough to get me to give the Mitras a second look.

RICHMOND MUSIC 2022, PART II: INDIE (SECOND HALF) 💥

OK, I should have known that this one in particular would go too long — when I made up these playlists before starting to write this article series, the indie playlist was the longest one by a significant amount. To put it in perspective, the rather lengthy hip hop playlist was under an hour; meanwhile, the indie playlist was over two hours.

With that in mind, we’ve still got a lot to get through that I didn’t manage to cover last time. Let’s dive right in. And as always, hit me up at [email protected] if you think I missed any essential 2022 RVA releases. Try as I might, I can’t catch ’em all. But here are quite a few great ones I did find.

RICHMOND MUSIC 2022, PART II: INDIE (FIRST HALF) 🔥🔥

Since I got to this city 30 years ago, Richmond’s had a thriving indie music scene. From wild house parties and tiny stages in small clubs to headlining gigs at The Broadberry and beyond, plenty of indie bands around Richmond distinguished themselves with excellent music this year.

Of course, before we go on, something’s gotta be clarified — what does indie mean? It’s not like hip hop, a genre with a set sound that everyone recognizes right away. It’s a more nebulous space, one that encompasses stuff that isn’t straight up rock n’ roll or mainstream pop, but isn’t far enough out to count as punk or experimental or anything like that. Bedroom pop, steely gothic postpunk, psychedelic slowcore, electro-retro-New-Wave, introspective emo-pop… all of this and more might be found somewhere in this list. You might not agree that everything I list here counts as indie, but one thing you do have to agree with me about: this is all great local music that came out in 2022.

RVA SHOWS YOU MUST SEE THIS WEEK:
JANUARY 4 – JANUARY 10

⭐ FEATURED SHOW ⭐
Friday, January 6, 9 PM

Ten Pound Snail, Deli Kings, Destructo Disk
@ The Camel – $10 in advance, $12 day of show

Well hey, it’s the first show column of 2023! New year, new scene? No, probably not — none of the many subtle metamorphoses artistic communities go through conform that neatly to the whims of the calendar, and there’s no reason that should change now, as we enter another winter and try to push back the cold as the spectre of COVID lingers, never quite vanquished. However, one interesting thing does happen in the local live music scene as the calendar rolls over to a new year — the First Friday residence at The Camel changes hands. This year sees outgoing residents Honest Debts passing the torch to Ten Pound Snail.

This indie-psych trio has been making intriguing music here in RVA since back around the beginning of the pandemic, and are just about to follow up their enjoyable full-length debut, 2021’s Parlor Tricks, with a brand new collection called Tabula Rasa. It’s still a day away as I write this, so I haven’t heard the whole album, but my excitement for what Ten Pound Snail has in store for us has definitely been ramped up over the past year. They’ve released four advance singles for Tabula Rasa thus far, the most recent being “Glass Skin,” and all of them show off the band’s range and ability to create dynamic song structures that slowly grow and change over the course of several minutes. Plus, of course, this trio has a variety of killer riffs in their bag of (parlor) tricks, which they never shy away from deploying.

LOCAL BUSINESS CHARGED UP ENTERTAINMENT VS MLB’S THE CLEVELAND GUARDIANS: WHO OWNS THE “C”?

According to the CEO of Charged Up Entertainment and local hip hop legend, Noah Oddo, the Cleveland Guardians have accused the company of infringing on their team’s new logo. Oddo stated that the Cleveland Guardians’ lawyers contacted him and demanded that he give up the Charged Up logo or relinquish his legal rights to protect the brand. Oddo claims that the Cleveland Guardians’ claim is baseless, as Charged Up Entertainment has been using its logo since 2015 and has never received any complaints about confusion in the marketplace.

The United States Patent and Trademark Office has approved the mark to move forward, but the Cleveland Guardians Baseball Club has filed an objection to the request to trademark the Charged Up Entertainment logo, which has been in use since 2015.

22/12/2022

J. Roddy Walston, frontman of local rock band Palm Palm, is super talented, always entertaining, and doing something a little different. How many people write original Christmas songs? Not many in Richmond have tried, but last year he wrote a few and took them on the road. This year he has a whole album worth of music and is currently on The Second Annual Christmas To the Bone Tour from Lexington to Brooklyn with his latest stop being tonight at The Broadberry.

"Once a year, I get to fully turn into this like Mad Santa Man but it’s fun even for the guys in the band last year. A tour where there’s no pressure to be anything except happy and ridiculous. Just like turn the whole being in a rock band thing on its head a little bit and just be goofballs, come out into the crowd with ridiculous banter somewhere in between David Lee Roth and fake drunk Dean Martin kind of come out at the same time."

Records. For those that don't know what a 'record' is -- they are flat vinyl disks that play warm and rich music sounds when put on a record player. We are kinda making a joke here but there are a ton of people that have no idea what they are or what the appeal is. But to the army of folks that are into that scene, this is THE way to experience music.

Besides selling records, the local music stores serve as a meeting place for people that share a deep love for music of all kinds and are a keystone of our local music culture and history. Luckily, we have an amazing variety of shops to choose from and Richmond is better for it.

So let's show some love to YOUR favourite spot!

SAVING HYRULE TOGETHER: AN INTERVIEW WITH RICHMOND SINGER-SONGWRITER NATH 👋👋

Natalie Tyer, AKA Nath, is a singer songwriter from RVA whose music has a serious “wow” factor. She’s been releasing music for nearly a decade, recently following up her self-titled third album, from 2020, with a pair of digital singles: the Legend-Of-Zelda-themed “Let’s Save Hyrule Together,” released in July; and “Everything I Have,” released in September. Hearing Nath will leave you asking yourself, “How is she not famous?” It’s a rare question, and it indicates a rare talent. Anyone who has yet to hear Nath sing is certainly missing out. I wanted to shed some light on her work and ask about her writing process, so I sat down with her for an interview over at Galley in Bon Air.

There are so many good bands that this feels almost impossible to boil it down to a few that everyone has to see -- and this poll isn't really about that. This is to give people on the outside a glimpse of what is happening and to bring them into supporting the talent that is here in town. When we are discussing the metal-punk-hardcore music scene in Richmond, VA -- we are talking about an extremely diverse group and for people that don't know, it's one of the most supportive of each other.

There are so many different approaches and talents that even doing a poll isn't going to accurately tell us what's really happening out there -- but its a start right? Everyone on this list is worth a listen and we hope by putting this out there, more people will.

A BIT OF STASIS: AN INTERVIEW WITH PALMYRA 👋👋

On a cold Tuesday afternoon I found myself sitting around a poker table with the three members of one of my favorite local bands, Palmyra. Although the table was not set for us to play, I was hosting a game later that evening, the image was still rather amusing to me in the moment. We had gathered because, somehow, RVA Magazine had yet to cover this fantastic up-and-coming folk trio, and to discuss a new series of videos that they have put together, with their song “Presence” premiering today, Friday December 2nd at noon on RVAMag TV.

CATCHING THE NEXT SKA WAVE: AN INTERVIEW WITH ROGER LIMA OF LESS THAN JAKE

Less Than Jake reached a lot of ears at the same time The Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Reel Big Fish were, but have had a lasting impact far beyond the blip of commercial success that ska had. Over the course of their 30 years together, a lot has changed in the industry, but their passion and seamless transition between records and songs has not. Before Less Than Jake’s upcoming Richmond show at The Canal Club on Friday, December 2, we caught up with bassist Roger Lima, who talked with us about what still keeps things strong after 30 years, fans from all eras of Less Than Jake, and what songs they’d play at a wedding.
