Five Stick Friday Five Stick Friday is my personal blog. I'm finding it easier to express my thoughts longform.

This was the week. One year ago. I had to carry Copper up the back deck stairs. His hind legs had just given out. That night he barely ate. And I knew. They always say dogs you’ve loved would “tell you” when it was time. And my Prince Copper told me a year ago today that it was time. Those last remaining days as I made arrangements for in-home vet services, contacting my kids to get them home, and emotionally preparing myself were honestly 6 of the worst days of my life… but I fought really hard to make them 6 of his most comfortable....

He was already a member of the fraternity, and though we were the same age, I didn't join a fraternity my first year at Tech, so I was a lowly rushee. I don't exactly remember our first conversation, but I do know it did take place during Fall Rush of 1982 in what the fraternity deemed the "tube" room , the only place the house had a television....

Tonight is the 25th anniversary of our first New Years Eve in this house. We moved here in August of 1999 from a larger home in Brookstone and were “just going to be here a couple of years”. And 25 years later we’re still here in our house that became our home. We bought these “year 2000” toasting glasses and stayed home that year… laughing nervously about what might happen at midnight with all the Y2K hysteria that year....

When I was 8 years old, my Dad loaded up my brother and I to drive to Atlanta for the 1971 Peach Bowl. Georgia Tech was to face Ole Miss at Atlanta Fulton County Stadium. Before the game, we went to the Varsity where I had my first glorious chili cheese dog, onion rings, and a large Frosted Orange. The skies opened up on us and it rained relentlessly but we didn’t leave the game until well into the 4th quarter as Tech was getting blown out 41-18....

Laurie Tanner Henry and I decided to go over to Green Meadows Preserve and walk down in the woods after lunch. It’s important for me to get out and walk with the neuropathy I’m fighting with in both feet, and with Copper no longer with us, I was glad to have Laurie with me today. As I mentioned in a post earlier this week, the back half of 2024 has been rough from a “losing people you care about or having people you care about lose their special someone” perspective....

I recently finished watching “Ted Lasso” on Apple TV. I’m not sure why I put this off so long. Maybe because I’ve never been a fan of European soccer, maybe because I just wasn’t sure how Jason Sudeikis was going to pull off the role, or maybe it’s just part of my semi-rebellious nature to not watch what everyone else is watching while they’re watching it....

This won’t be a long post. But I’ve always loved a good redemption story. I’ve always enjoyed his career and thought he was an amazing actor. And I have to admit I lost track of him while I was in college and starting my career. But I do remember reading about his problems, his trips to rehab, and wondering if he was going to right the ship....

Last night Erin’s boyfriend mentioned a short film that was mentioned several times in the Academy Awards Ceremony on Sunday night… and that he thought I would enjoy it… The title is “The Last Repair Shop”, and is evidently about a group of instrument repair technicians in Los Angeles that have been repairing instruments for public school students since 1959. …...

42 years ago yesterday, one of the most unlikely things in Sports History ever transpired. The United States Hockey Team, stitched together from college players by' coach Herb Brooks, defeated the Russian team in the 1980 Winter Olympics. I was 16 years old, and on a Church Retreat at Epworth By The Sea near St. Simons Island, GA. I'm not sure I realized back then exactly what had transpired....

I woke up this morning reflecting. We're now in the 9th day of Lent and I've held true to my "no public social media activity" promise. It's actually been cathartic. Here's some things I've realized over the last nine days. 1. Social Media is kinda cool...but it's all just a bunch of people speaking into the ether. Without ever knowing much about who's reading, who cares ( if anyone), and whether their words are just lost into oblivion....

Well, rather spontaneously, I decided this past "Ash Wednesday" to take lent seriously this year and "remove a distraction" during the Easter season this year...and that distraction will be actively posting on Social Media Platforms. So...from February 14th through Easter, approximately 45 days, I'm walking into an unannounced "social media blackout"...other than typing thoughts here, in my personal blog. 6 days in and so far so good....

I can remember a million years ago, Laurie and I went to Cancun on vacation with some dear friends. In spite of some weather issues and a time share salesman that seemed determined to ruin our time there, we made a lot of memories. One of those memories was (possibly) an ill-advised "booze cruise" out to an island for an awesome beach party dinner....
