In response to the escalating gender-based violence crisis in Botswana, a pioneering initiative dubbed the "GBV Emergency Intervention Program" has been launched, targeting women in remote communities. This programme goes beyond traditional measures by focusing on economic empowerment, self-defense training, and educating boys to change attitudes toward GBV from an early age. This discussion explores how the initiative aims to ignite a nationwide dialogue that not only condemns violence against women but also challenges deep-rooted societal norms. It assesses whether this comprehensive strategy can make a tangible impact on reducing GBV and improving community safety across Botswana.

Between 2022 and 2025, the Global DNA Diagnostic Center in Botswana conducted over 2,000 paternity tests, revealing that 70% of the men tested were not the biological fathers. This statistic has raised serious legal concerns, particularly in the areas of child custody, maintenance, and inheritance. This discussion explores the legal implications of such a policy, including potential conflicts with privacy rights, family law principles, and the ethical responsibilities of the state. The discussion asks: Should mandatory DNA testing be implemented in all legal cases involving paternity in Botswana?

Botswana’s first National Anti-Poaching Strategy (NAPS) was implemented from 2014 to 2019 in response to rising illegal wildlife trade and poaching. This strategic plan aimed to reduce wildlife population declines by addressing illegal harvesting and trafficking, while also fulfilling Botswana’s obligations under international agreements. During its implementation, challenges such as increasingly sophisticated and multinational poaching syndicates were observed, leading to broader threats to human security and governance. We discuss how Botswana’s approach to anti-poaching has evolved since the implementation of the 2014–2019 National Anti-Poaching Strategy and what new measures are being prioritized in the updated strategy.
