Hello! It's been a while but the second issue, and first print edition, of SISTAH ZINE is now available to order.

We thank everyone for their patience as this project came together, and we are so excited to finally share it. Each page of this edition contains many lessons and musings on the meaning and importance of home and community; we hope you'll take the time to take in each one.

It is impossible to extend sufficient gratitude to those who contributed to this edition. Nevertheless, we extend all of our thanks to those who shared their insights with us, and hope the final magazine does justice to your work.

You can order now at this link: https://sistahzine.bigcartel.com/

Proceeds from this issue are going to Period Link. See our earlier posts for more info!

Wishing everyone a time of warmth and celebration on International Women's Day 2021!☆

We wanted to share this post as a reminder that movements cannot be reduced to moments, struggles in communities cannot be reduced to individuals & fighting for the liberation of women cannot be separated from fighting for the liberation of all.

The rights of women to be safe against violence, to have reproductive dignity and autonomy, to be equal in the workplace, to be represented substantively in political systems and everything else cannot be separated from struggles against the climate crisis, against capitalism, for racial justice, for justice and safety for migrants and refugees and for LGBTQ+ rights. This is intersectionality. Celebrate but reflect today!

💛SISTAH #2 IS IN THE WORKS💛
For the second issue of Sistah Zine, we invite you to reclaim the term ‘home’ and contemplate the reclamation of language more broadly. Particularly in the context of the pandemic, where home has primarily been invoked in a command (‘stay at home!’), we are interested in how certain discourses are constructed around a term to be imposed on an individual or community. How might you define home? What spatial, temporal or interpersonal associations do you make? In the transitional context of the pandemic, has its meaning to you changed?

Over the next few weeks, we’ll share some thoughts on the theme to provide some inspiration! Here’s one to begin with, intersecting with our discussions on migration from Sistah #1. The control of movement through a global system of borders and policies to control them regulates ‘home’ for us. How can we reimagine this? In Maya Goodfellow’s words, why do we want to organise our world like this? How can we problematise borders, and what is the potential for redefinition of ‘home’ in this sense?

In our conversation with Maya Goodfellow on the UK’s hostile environment policies and the political narratives on borders and migration, essential questions were raised about liberation.

“The question I often come to is ‘why do we want to organise our world like this?’ Who is it benefitting and who is it harming? We must consider how the immigration system itself is inherently exclusionary and how the process of bordering is built on exclusion.”

It is essential that we consider the violence enabled by the border and the hostile environment at this moment. Today marks the 1 year anniversary of the Essex 39. On 23 October 2019, 39 Vietnamese migrants were found dead in the back of a lorry in Essex. This is one of many, many examples of the people who seek safety in this country only to be subject to violence & neglect from this (the UK) government.

The last few months have demonstrated that the government does not intend to de escalate the hostile environment; Priti Patel, the home secretary, has explored such ideas as keeping asylum seekers in offshore detention centres. The Home Office is preparing, as we speak, to outsource £28 million in public contracts to ramp up its deportation scheme. These actions must be exposed and condemned.

You will read about this in SISTAH zine soon. In the meantime, there are myriad resources to engage with & .resist is a great place to start today! We’ll be sharing their resources on our instagram story.

The upcoming zine, as well as creating a space to discuss liberation, will act as a fundraiser for the Hackney-based domestic violence support organisation, Sistah Space, whose fight to retain their safe space & receive fair treatment from Hackney Council is ongoing. Please take the time to read about their situation & lend your support as you can. ♡

Sistah Space is a prime example of the collective organising discussed in Lola Olufemi’s small but wonderfully inimitable book, 'Feminism, Interrupted.’
these are just the kinds of ideas we’d like you to explore through our zine so stay tuned!

☆ SAFE SPACE FOR SISTAH SPACE! ☆
Our linktree ( https://linktr.ee/sistahzine ) contains some ways you can support Sistah Space in the interim before our zine is published!
Take a look and lend your support!

the fight for liberation takes place in myriad dimensions, & we hope to explore as many as possible through your submissions.☆
