What are the pro's and con's of being a digital nomad?

Always wanted to work and travel at the same time? I spent much of 2021 doing exactly that - living and working from a VW campervan whilst travelling through Europe.

But it's not all sunshine and roses as Instagram makes out....

In this week's episode, I talk about my experience as a digital nomad - all the great things, but also the challenges, so if it's a lifestyle you're thinking you'd like to try you can do so with some real life, honest insight!!

When most people think of ‘digital nomad’ they think a laptop poolside or on the beach with a cocktail and 20 minutes of work a day. Probably followed up by a pool party in the sun and buckets of Moet! The reality is lots of work in very uncomfortable places!

There are both pro's and con's to being a digital nomad - and I have been lucky enough to experience this lifestyle first hand when I travelled 5000 miles across Europe working, living and travelling in a camper van.

In the final episode of Series 1, I share with you my take on the pro's and con's to this lifestyle - and what you need to consider if you're thinking of heading off into the sunset with your laptop under your arm...

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗴𝗼𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝘁 𝗼𝗿 𝗻𝗼𝘁?! 🤔

This is a great question to ask yourself if you're wanting to set up your own business, but not sure what to do!

By setting up a business in an industry you're passionate about (i.e. something you'd do even if you didn't get paid for it) you'll be starting off on the right foot.

This was the exact question I asked myself when I set up my first business - Equine Elite Recruitment. I was hugely passionate about the equestrian industry and loved helping enthusiastic and skilled grooms and riders get great jobs. It was a bonus I got paid for it too!

Of course, we all need to earn a living and money is important, but when you're thinking about setting up a business thinking about your passions is the best place to start.

So, my question is....

My six top tips to set up a business! 🔥

1️⃣ 𝗙𝗜𝗡𝗗 𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗣𝗔𝗦𝗦𝗜𝗢𝗡
Running a business is H.A.R.D.... You're going to spend a lot of time and energy working on and in your business, so it's soooo much more better if you're passionate about what you're doing.

2️⃣ 𝗞𝗡𝗢𝗪 𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗠𝗔𝗥𝗞𝗘𝗧
Before launching your product or service into the world, it's crucial you know your market - you are an expert in the industry and you know your target customers issues!

3️⃣ 𝗦𝗢𝗟𝗩𝗘 𝗔 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗕𝗟𝗘𝗠
Often we get the best business ideas when we 'scratch our own itch'. What p*sses you off? What frustrates you? And what could you (yes, YOU!) with your skillset do about that?

4️⃣ 𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗥𝗧 𝗟𝗘𝗔𝗡
It can be great to start a business with a ton of money behind you, but it's 100% not necessary. Start your business with as little as possible and experiment as you go. If it all falls apart, then you're not out of pocket and if it goes great, you're onto something!

5️⃣ 𝗕𝗘 𝗔 𝗣𝗟𝗔𝗡𝗡𝗘𝗥
When you start your own business, you'll have to wear a bunch of different 'hats'. You'll be the marketing department, operations team, accounts manager and everything in between. In order to stay focussed and on-track, get good at planning!

6️⃣ 𝗙𝗜𝗡𝗗 𝗔 𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗢𝗥
Running your own business can be a lonely affair, so as early as you can in your business journey, seek the help of a coach and mentor to support and fast-track you to where you want to go.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗜 𝘀𝗲𝘁 𝘂𝗽 𝗺𝘆 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀.... 🤓

This photo was taken in September 2008 where I was lucky enough to be grooming at Burghley for the incredible William Fox-Pitt alongside super-groom Alex Van Tuyll. This handsome chap 🐴 was the super talented (but sometimes grumpy!) Ballincoola who William rode to🥈 that year, only beaten to the top spot by his other horse, Tamarillo! 🥇 What a result!

The experience of working on one of the best yards in the world was invaluable to me when I then set up my first business in 2012 - Equine Elite Recruitment. I learned so much from William, Alice and the rest of the team. Golly, it was hard work and long hours, but so so worth it. When I set up my recruitment business a few years later, not only had I experience working at the top level of my industry, but I knew what it took to work for an elite rider - and also what the employers had to offer to find the best staff. Win-win. 🤩

Knowing your industry is key to success when setting up a business. There is no substitute to getting quality, first-hand experience in whatever it is you want to do. Be humble and be happy to start at the bottom whether that's scrubbing toilets, washing dishes or shovelling horse poo (all of which I've done and done gladly!!)

I'm currently deep in the career-change process as a train to be a Wim Hof Method Instructor.

The Wim Hof Method is something I was introduced to a few years ago - and for someone who struggled to sit still to meditate even for 10 minutes, finally gave me a sense of calm and peace.

A combination of breath-work, cold therapy and mindset, the Wim Hof method encapsulates three elements that I have found really help me stay on-track and able to cope with the stressors of every day life. Never did I think I would end up hiking to a semi-frozen waterfall in a pair of shorts in -10C in Poland in February! 🥶

I fully appreciate, career change (or even a pivot, like I'm doing now) can feel like a challenging process.

Making life changes is hard. It’s even harder when it’s a big change - leaving your old job, changing career, starting your own business, or hundreds of other difficult choices.

Even if it’s obvious that making a big change will be beneficial, it can be tough. Our mind wants to stay where it’s comfortable, which means doing the same things we’ve always done. So how do you actually start to make some changes that will lead you to where you want to go? All without leaving yourself stressed out and overwhelmed?

To me, career change is a four-step process. First to 𝗘𝗩𝗔𝗟𝗨𝗔𝗧𝗘 where you are now, then to 𝗚𝗘𝗡𝗘𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗘 𝗜𝗗𝗘𝗔𝗦. Without 𝗠𝗔𝗡𝗔𝗚𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗠𝗜𝗡𝗗𝗦𝗘𝗧 it's likely you'll hold yourself back and then you need to 𝗧𝗔𝗞𝗘 𝗕𝗢𝗟𝗗 𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡.

It's time to talk about 𝗕𝗨𝗥𝗡𝗢𝗨𝗧. 🤯🔥🤯

Burnout is so much more than just being tired. Complete burnout is often when you're at a mental and physical breaking point - where you have no choice but to do what Mel did - and to stop.

Frighteningly, the statistic show that more than three-quarters (79%) of UK employees have experienced burnout at some point in their careers. There must be more we can do to reduce this number in the workplace?

Mel managed to turn her experience of burnout into a positive, and it was the push she needed to set up her own coaching business.

𝗜𝗦 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗦𝗨𝗖𝗖𝗘𝗦𝗦?🤷‍♀️

This was the question I asked myself in 2019, and I didn't like the answer. From the outside, I appeared 'successful'. My diary was fully booked, I was good at what I did and I was constantly on the go and busy.

However, on the inside, I didn't feel successful. I felt stressed, overwhelmed and burnt out. I never had enough - enough time, enough money or enough clients. I was constantly hustling and chasing. I was exhausted.

I didn't know how to get off the hamster wheel and work out how to run a successful business on my own terms. It wasn't until I was introduced to business coach Melanie MacIntyre when things began to change and I could finally take control of my time and energy.

Eeeeeek! Today is the day, the podcast is now LIVE!!! 🥳 🥳 🥳

In the very first episode of the Rebel Careers podcast, I share my story, taking you back to 2012 when my entrepreneurial journey started.

Before I set up my first business () in 2012, I was frustrated and fed up! I felt I had to make a choice. To create a career doing something I didn't enjoy, so I could earn money or to sacrifice earning money to do something I loved. I thought there must be a better way!

This is the story of how I got off the beaten track and created my own rebel career – as an entrepreneur, adventurer and traveller. Rebel Careers is all about helping you to dare to dream, think outside the box, gain clarity around the career and life you want to create for yourself and give you the confidence to pursue that vision. With Rebel Careers, I want to show you how earning money and creating a career doesn’t have to be just a job. It can be your dream!

No Monday blues here at Rebel Careers HQ, as today it's the turn of Mike Churchyard to record his career story for the podcast!

Mike appears to effortlessly blend being a father of four (five, if you count Chester (his cocker spaniel!)), with running a successful sports therapy clinic and competing in ultra-marathon events. Plus, this is all since he retired from a career as a police offer. Phew!

I can't wait to get stuck into this interview and find out how Mike has created a life full of freedom and adventure.

The first three podcast episodes will be out TOMORROW 😵‍💫 - featuring interviews with Melanie MacIntyre, Kelly Gentry and I'll also be sharing my rebel career story.

2022 is turning out to be a year of new ideas and new beginnings! Creating a podcast has been a dream of mine for a few years now, so I couldn't be more excited that it's very nearly here!

The 𝗥𝗲𝗯𝗲𝗹 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗣𝗼𝗱𝗰𝗮𝘀𝘁 will bring together incredible stories of inspiring people from around the world who are following their passion, creating the life of their dreams with all the freedom and adventure they desire.

I (Sarah Huntley!) will also be sharing my personal experiences from the past ten years of building my own 'rebel career' - starting four businesses from scratch with no money, no business qualifications, but lots of ambition and determination to work it out!
