So excited to share my latest episode of At The End Of the Day podcast. It's an interview with Eliza Reid. In the '90s, we were friends in university. Today, she is the First Lady of Iceland. (No, really!). She is also the author of, "Secrets of the Sprakkar: Iceland's Extraordinary Women and How They Are Changing The World" from Simon & Schuster Canada. I highly recommend this book, especially if Roe v Wade, Depp v Heard and just *gesticulates widely* everything is getting you down. We don't have to accept misogyny as a given. There are better ways and change can happen. Here is our conversation on Apple Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/how-to-embrace-a-totally-different-kind-of-life/id1620938351?i=1000564793246
I've written a 3-part series of newsletters in collaboration with Chatelaine. You can read it in your inbox as usual, or on their site! Our latest is an advice column that I had a lot of fun writing. It seems like moving is on many minds these days https://www.chatelaine.com/living/leaving-the-city-advice/

Good morning to everyone but those who stand with lawless white supremacy. As much as I'd like to ignore the Freedom Convoy, the one point I want to make rn is let's not use truck drivers as a cover for what's really happening. When you want to direct your anger, blast racism, hate groups and anti-vaxx nonsense, not truck drivers. Truckers are not a monolithic group. Many are racialized essential workers who are vaxxed and just doing their jobs.
And what I'd WAY rather focus on (which I did in my newsletter) is the radio interview on a WHOLE OTHER TOPIC (I promise) -- information on homelessness (and examples of reducing it) that powered me through the week ✌💖https://ateodletter.substack.com/p/solving-a-crisis-is-doable

The news (how can I put this?) sucks these days, so I decided to talk about one thing that's getting me through: friendship. With big thanks to everyone who wrote in with questions for my second Advice Column. I find these so fun to write. Throughout July, I've been writing about trying to rest. I've gotten some great advice, which I've shared all month. Today's newsletter features Let's Hike T.O. a hiking group that centres young people of colour and newcomers to Toronto. There's also All Out and I've seen, from a quick search, lots of groups like this in many major cities. I, personally, have a posse of children who get me outside. But if you don't, don't let it stop you. Get together with a bunch of strangers! Research shows that even 15 - 20 minutes in nature can have a benefits to your mental health. In my newsletter, I also cite Take Me Outside, a book by Colin Harris, who mentions stats on how Canadians are getting outside less and less. Why? I hope you're getting outside this summer ✌🌈 https://ateodletter.substack.com/p/let-your-brain-relax-in-the-wild

I'm looking forward to a long weekend. We all need it! But if you're wondering how to approach Canada Day, I thought about it, too. I looked to my own personal experience, as well as what's in the news, and landed here https://ateodletter.substack.com/p/should-we-cancel-canada-day

We're well into another pandemic work week and the news has been heavy. There's one connecting factor in many of the most difficult news headlines to take and that's white supremacy. I wrote about how intentional we need to be about finding moments of peace in order to cope and push back https://ateodletter.substack.com/p/where-are-your-moments-of-peace

I can't believe I've been writing ATEOD letter for over a year, throughout all the lockdowns, shutdowns, stay-at-home orders, an emergency brake and counting. Here's the newsletter I sent last week and I'm working on a new one for tomorrow. If you haven't already, subscribe to At The End Of the Day for my newsletter on a people-first perspective on the news. Or share with a friend! I'm looking to boost subscribers this spring 🌱🌷🌈 Take care

Last week, I connected with Cheekbone Beauty for a giveaway for ATEOD subscribers. Thank you for entering -- winners will be contacted later this week! If you didn't get in on it, you can still treat yourself. Use the code ATEOD2021 before Friday, Apr 2 for 10% off. I'm very inspired by Jenn Harper, the founder of Cheekbone. The lipstick they make is great and smooth and gorgeous. But the real reason Cheekbone exists is to empower Indigenous youth. I love watching this company grow. The news on Covid isn't good. It's tough to deal with the onslaught, really. So I connected with the brilliant Madeleine Mant, a medical anthropologist with University of Toronto-Mississauga for a big-picture (like, really big picture) perspective. She studies "bodies through time" which means how individuals have experienced sickness and health, historically-speaking. She had some great things to say about what's new, what isn't and how she feels right now (spoiler alert: It's hopeful!) https://ateodletter.substack.com/p/light-at-the-end-of-the-tunnel

The summer I turned 17 I worked, along with a best friend, in a rich family's home. The job wasn't as advertised. We became stressed, isolated and didn't have boundaries (ohhhh, sound familiar to anyone WFH in a pandemic?). Work, and how we can do it better, is the topic of my newsletter this week. 📣 Also: I'm super-excited to announce my first sponsor Real Food for Real Kids! They deliver healthy, delicious frozen meals in the Toronto area. Together we're offering 20% off with the code ATEOD20. A percentage of sales will come back to my newsletter. Last week, I wrote an open letter to Ontario premier Doug Ford. Also last week, the Ford conservative government in Ontario voted down a private member's bill to legislate paid sick days for all. How can leaders keep telling people to when it isn't an option for low-wage, precarious workers? Read, share, and write your own letters. With big thanks to two people I spoke with on the issue of paid sick days: Carolina of Decent Work and Health Network and Kyle of Welland, Ontario who works as a cleaner and whose partner works in fast food. I originally wrote my letter to the Ontario government as part of the campaign with Fight for $15 & Fairness Thank you for reading ✌️https://ateodletter.substack.com/p/open-letter-to-doug-ford-in-3-acts

It's pandemic February. Do yourself a favour and connect with stories of strength and survival. That's what I did this week by watching Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's Instagram Live, which stayed with me a long while. I also recently whipped through a new memoir from mental health and racial equity advocate Celina Caesar-Chavannes, former Liberal MP for Whitby, Ontario. Her book, Can You Hear Me Now? is a page-turner. I feel grateful that I had the opportunity to connect with her for a Q&A, which you can read in this week's newsletter. Before I get into this week's newsletter, I wanted to tell you about an advance screening of Minari, a beautiful new movie about a Korean American family by writer and director Lee Isaac Chung.
Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival is turning 25! And they are doing this Minari screening, for Canadians, as a fundraiser since they can't hold their annual gala this year.
If you're in Toronto, you can get the VIP package, which is a screening and an amazing package of Korean snacks (see the pic!). The suggested donation is $65 (although why not more?). See this amazing movie and drop a donation to Reel Asian, details here: https://www.reelasian.com/
As for my newsletter this week, entertainment journalist and ATEOD editor Ishani Nath and I get into a conversation on Minari, the bigger picture of telling immigrant family stories and how to do it right.
And I'm thrilled to be giving away 4 advance screening passes to Minari through partnering with Reel Asian. This giveaway is for subscribers only and you can read the details (and our conversation on Minari) here: https://ateodletter.substack.com/p/the-slow-power-moves-of-minari

How's your bubble? In this week's ATEOD newsletter, I'm trying to step away from the forever high alert of breaking news and take the long view. I found inspiration in our home school lesson from Wednesday. I called it, "Inauguration: Pay attention, kids!" This newsletter features links to what I'm reading, listening to and following, for perspective on the climate crisis and to help me be a decent source of info for the people in my world. Hoping you're all doing ok with your own people, too. PS: This week, I'm cooking up something fun, for subscribers only. Today is a good news day I hope this feeling of relief can last a few days at least. Last week, I wrote about coping through movement because overall, this is a time of just relentless bad news. So I shared a personal story of how I got through a tough time, pre-COVID, through fighting my body's fire with fire, exchanging happy hormones for the stress-y ones. This week, I wrote about virtual school. In our house, our 6-year-old is dropping out. Every situation is unique, depending on a kid's age and capacity and above all, family circumstances. But just in case you also needed someone to tell you that it's ok to have other priorities, this one's for you. A big influence on my outlook is the experience of my dad, whose own schooling was interrupted as a child, and my friend Joey, an excellent and dedicated teacher who gave me advice in an early ATEOD newsletter during last year's lockdown to prioritize family and mental well-being over the fear of "falling behind" in school. https://ateodletter.substack.com/p/opting-out-of-school

Why I started At The End Of The Day
Hi! So nice to meet you. I’m Hannah and I write the ATEOD newsletter. I’m a journalist who has worked in Canadian media for 20 years. My career has included a bunch of fun work detours as well as the weight of great responsibility, covering pop to politics and so many subjects in between.
This newsletter is my ongoing attempt to address the overwhelming nature of news and information. I write from a perspective that asks you to consider, What’s most important to you at the end of the day?
How do you take a firehose of information and boil it down to a perspective that empowers you to make decisions in life, with those you care about most?
When you think about your friends, family, your community and yourself, you’re also considering what’s best for social fairness, our collective society and the greater good. I’m into that. It’s a point of connection for all of us.
ATEOD is about a people-first perspective on the news. I began this newsletter by immersing myself in an amazing group of independent, journalist entrepreneurs who were convened by the Independent News Challenge, run by The Discourse with support from Facebook. What this group of journalists has in common is that we’re passionate about serving unaddressed niches in journalism, whether it’s about serving local and regional needs or otherwise.
I’m working on carving out my own niche with this space, making it inclusive and acknowledging how we interact with news and information. It’s emotional and should get personal.
