As tradition had it, everyone in the O’Donnell family went to 92-year-old Nana Mabel’s house for Thanksgiving dinner. Several relatives offered to help, but as usual Nana insisted on being alone in the kitchen.

“Maybe you’re getting a bit too old for all this. Are you sure you don’t want a little help?” offered her granddaughter, Janine.

“Hog wash!” Nana said. “I’m still a youngin’. Now stay out of my kitchen! Guard the door, Aunt Delilah!” And with a wink and a smile she shut herself back in the kitchen.

Normally, like clockwork, Thanksgiving dinner was served at precisely 2:30PM. But with no sign of Nana or dinner by 3:00PM, people started to get worried.

Most of the family had been sitting at the table the entire time, with the exception of:

- Dutiful Aunt Delilah, who stood guard by the kitchen door
- Drunk Uncle Derrick, who went outside to change his tire taking the bottle of Scotch with him
- Angry Aunt Angelina, who went into the next room to work on her cross-stitch by herself
- Sweet Little Susan, who wasn’t feeling well and went upstairs to take a nap
- Incorrigible 13-year-old Ivan, who went outside to practice archery

Finally Aunt Delilah knocked on the kitchen door. After no response, she peeked in and immediately screamed. Not only was the turkey burnt to a crisp, but Nana laid on the floor, dead to the world, hit over the head with a blunt object.

Detective Ratcliff had just sat down for dinner when the phone rang.

Upon arriving at the scene he interviewed the family members, inspected the kitchen equipment, helped himself to some cold hors d'oeuvres, and then told the uniformed officers who to arrest for the crime.

Police were called out Friday afternoon for a wellness check on Mrs. Anna M. Botha. The call came from her niece, who was quite concerned as she hadn’t heard from her aunt in days.

They found Mrs. Botha dead on the kitchen floor. Indications pointed to a heart attack, but the medical examiner revealed she'd been heavily poisoned sometime Tuesday morning. They called Detective Ratcliff out to the scene.

Detective Ratcliff arrived at the scene a little past 5pm. After inspecting her body, he opened her mail, which included an overdue electric bill, a free offer for a carpet cleaning, a letter from overseas, a note from her doctor, and an angry letter from her son that was neither postmarked nor sealed.

He also checked the answering machine and despite receiving several messages from her niece prior to Monday night, there were no other messages.

After a moment of meditation, Detective Ratcliff was ready to make an arrest and told officers to follow him.
