29-year-old Nnamdi Azikiwe was selected to represent Nigeria in the long-distance running events of the 1934 British Empire Games in England, but he was reje.cted by the Br1tish organisers because he dr0pped his Christian name, 'Benjamin'.
Azikiwe was actively involved in sports at every stage of his life and was successful in many events that he participated in.
He was a boxing and high jump champion (1925, 1926), gold medallist in swimming (1927), captain of a football team (1930), marathon winner (1933), and tennis champion (1938).
