🏁Race Day 7 - We close out the race with a walk at Liberty Station in San Diego. I still cannot believe that this is our 3rd walk without Link. I got to tell new people about him today and raise awareness wearing him over my heart. We love you Link...and DM cannot take the love away 💜

🏁Race Day 6: Stone Security Pack Walk!

Today, I did an awareness walk around my employers business complex. A few of my co-workers joined, including the 4-legged variety!! I'm so grateful to have the support of the company and my co-workers. If only this race was a thing of the past. I hope that one day there will be a cure or a permanent solution to DM so that instead of raising awareness for the dogs we are loosing/lost, we can just cherish them and not have to worry about this senseless disease anymore. Ash and I wear our Link shirts that we wore on his 13th bday. The last birthday we knew he would have. We held him, cuddled him, and kissed him wearing these shirts. Every time I wear mine, I think, "You should still be here." With our voices, DM is getting so much recognition that it never had in the past. I hope Link knows how much of an impact his beautiful life has made....and I hope that our impact will get stronger and stronger. 🏁 Race Day 4 - Understanding DM Inheritance

🐾Remember your times-tables in elementary school? Here's your chance to do some DM-tables! This chart shows you how easy it is for breeders to understand how they can prevent DM affected dogs.

🐾"At Risk" means that the dog is at a high risk of developing DM symptoms (very high) because they have inherited a mutated gene from both parents .

🐾"Carrier" means that a dog only had 1 copy of the gene. While carriers typically do not experience DM, they can pass it on to their pups. More research needs to be done, because sometimes even the carriers have been known to get DM, although rare.

🐾"Clear" is straightforward! NO MUTATED GENES ON BOARD!

My little bud had inherited both copies of the mutated gene that causes DM. His symptoms began about a year after a traumatic injury that caused him to need emergency spinal surgery and left him a paraplegic. We still don't know why some dogs are effected by DM sooner or faster than others. Stress to the body is considered a potential accelerating factor. Some dogs with both copies of DM may die of other causes before DM is apparent. It's also possible for DM to stay "hiding" until the dog has lived a long and healthy life. However, It is rare for a dog with both copies of DM to evade the effects, and we are seeing so many dogs and their owners go through this.

🏁 Race Day 3 - What Degenerative Myelopathy is NOT

🐾DM is NOT an "old dogs" disease. Contrary to outdated beliefs, DM can effect dogs MUCH earlier than previously expected. Link was around 10 when DM began to effect him, but other dogs much younger.

🐾DM is NOT a spinal injury. Yes it causes weakness, paralysis, and atrophy, but it is considered a neurodegenerative disease and it comes from the SOD1 gene having a wonky allele.

🐾DM is NOT inevitable!! You read that right! DM can ACTUALLY be prevented through responsible gene screening,breeding programs, and spaying/neutering (more on this later!)

🐾DM is NOT just a Corgi thing! Who's at risk? American Eskimo Dog, Australian Shepherd, Bernese Mountain Dog, Bloodhound, Borzoi, Boxer, Cardigan Welsh Corgi, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Czech Wolfdog, English Springer Spaniel, German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, Hovawart, Kerry Blue Terrier, Labrador Retriever, Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Pug, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Rough Coated Collie, Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, Standard Poodle, and Wire Fox Terrier. Crossbred dogs have also been reported as clinically affected by SOD1-associated DM.

🏁 Race Day 2: DM FACTS
🐾 Degenerative Myelopathy is the canine version of ALS.
🐾 SO MANY BREEDS carry the DM gene! It isn't just corgis. Your dog could be at risk too! We are seeing tons of Shepherds and Boxers with DM, but there are many more!
🐾 Breeders can prevent the DM gene from being passed down.
🐾 Genetic diversity is important, so we NEED more research and solutions for DM! Responsible breeding is only a quick solution.
🐾 DM and ALS are one in the same! Shade Out DM participated in the ALS Walk this year in solidarity.
🐾 Dogs with DM experience a progressive loss of muscular function. This "spread" eventually reaches important muscles that control the esophagus, lungs and heart. DM is currently terminal.
🐾 PEOPLE STILL DONT KNOW ABOUT DM!! Join me in raising awareness. Share this post!!

At the ALS Walk in San Diego representing representing Canine ALS with Shade Out DM Foundation Inc ! It feels so good to join forces with the ALS Foundation. Also, Dr. Ryan Lorber of Helix Animal Hospital showed up. He was Link and Luna's vet. He is dear to my heart. Do you see Link up in the front there? Tauni Beckmann had him printed up with the other DM babies. I'm so grateful to be a part of Shade Out DM. I will never stop fighting for my boy.

11 years ago...when Link and Luna were tubby, and Clover the Flemish Giant was part of the pack. My kitty, P'zuzu, is the only one who is still this side of Heaven with me. By the way, we all lived in one room that I rented, and there was also a 10 gallon fish tank too 🤣🤣🤣

On our way to my mom's place for some well needed fam time. Nana is trialing a calming supplement to see if that helps with her social anxiety. So far, this little lady is still glued to me and wants nothing to do with any other human except my daughter. She does enjoy some pets from my husband under very specific circumstances. It's always heartwarming to see her getting love from him. He wants a bond with her so bad. Hopefully, time and love will help foster things more and more ❤️

I miss you, my social butterfly. You sent me a very anti-social corgi, and I'm really confused by that, lol. It makes me long for your bubbly personality. I miss being able to take you everywhere with me. It gave me deep joy to see you and Link slather people in kisses and sprinkle your corgi glitter all over them. You made people so happy. You were the best at taking people out at the knee cap so they could drop down to your level. I miss your crazy. I miss your naughty. I miss your loud. I miss all of you, every day, my looney tune. Mama will always miss you.

We are on Day 2 of Luna experiencing the negative side effects of Nystagmus (the eye movement you see in this reel). Luna's condition was most likely brought on by a round of metronidazole, a common antibiotic used to treat diarrhea and giardia in dogs. It's always important to have your pet seen promptly when nystagmus rears its ugly head. According to wagwalking.com, "peripheral vestibular disease can be caused by many factors: middle or inner ear infections, perforated eardrum, head trauma, hypothyroidism, stroke, polyps, tumors or as a side affect from medication. Central vestibular disease can be caused by a chronic inflammatory disease, infection, bleeding on the brain, trauma, impaired blood flow, or cancer." Nystagmus typically resolves within a week or two, but the uncomfortable side effects of vomiting and extreme dizziness have to be managed to prevent dehydration and injury. Luna is very unstable and gets disoriented very quickly since she is experiencing extreme vertigo. She is on Meclizine 12.5mg to manage her dizziness. It's the same stuff people take for motion sickness. Pippin doesn't know how popular he is going to be once he's up for adoption! He is waiting on a good toof-cleaning on 2/1, but if something opens up sooner, Mahm will take him in. He is still working on gaining confidence, but continues to be a lovable loaf that just wants to toodle around for a bit and lounge. And BOY does he SLEEP IN LATE!
