(Part 3) The women of Manipur have been protecting their communities for decades. In recent days, tens of thousands of people have taken to the streets to protest the government’s inaction. Manipur has a long and devastating history of violence. The recent news – the assault of women and Indigenous Peoples, as well as the government’s determination to continue state-sanctioned violence against Manipuri people – is not new. Listen to our episode with Bina to understand the history of British colonization, Indian martial law, and the courageous resistance of Manipuri women.

(Part 1) TW: sexual assault

We know that it’s been a while since we finished Season 1 of People • Place • Power, but we want to draw your attention to some sadly relevant news that’s come up in the last few days. In Episode 2, we interviewed Binalakshmi Nepram, an Indigenous Manipuri activist who is resisting the Indian government’s 60+ year martial law in her state. Bina told us about numerous instances of extrajudicial violence.

Sadly, the violence only continues. A disturbing viral video shows two women from the Kuki-Zomi tribe of Manipur being paraded naked and groped by a mob of men. While Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the incident, he has refused to comment on the long-lasting violence and conflict in Manipur despite people demanding a statement. News from Manipur and other areas under martial law is often censored. We are horrified by the incident that brought Manipur to the forefront of Indian news but grateful that the situation is getting international attention.

Read about the incident at our linktree in bio.

Over six decades— that’s how long the Indian state of Manipur has been under the Indian government’s martial law. That means the army can kill, torture, or arrest anyone for mere suspicion.

When the law doesn’t protect you, how do you protect yourself from the law? The Indigenous women of Manipur have been defending themselves and their communities from one of the largest armies in the world for decades using the power of their own bodies.

Tune in to Episode 2– out now!— to hear from Binalakshmi Nepram, one of today’s leaders in the struggle to free Manipur from state-imposed violence.
