At the Public Lecture jointly organised by the State Government of Osun and Coalition of Civil Society in the State to commemorate the June 12 Democracy Day, I noted that nationhood and democracy rest on strong institutions, equity, justice, political will and fairness, and that the absence of these kernels was responsible for our wobbled nationhood and democracy. We must find the courage to institute them in our polity to build a strong, virile and prosperous nation that we desire.

I also emphasised that the time has come for us as a people, to focus and rely on our shared values and the things that bind us together to build a nation and a democracy that will deliver values and good life to the masses and enable Nigeria takes its place in the comity of nations. We must ensure we overcome and do away with the inherent failings in our system – ethnicity, religion, graft, etc. – which have continued to threaten our nationhood and democracy.

The road to nationhood and democracy is in looking through the rear-view mirror to correct the anomalies in our journey so far, including those that made the fate of June 12 to befall us, and having the political will to birth a nation and a democracy that will truly make us to occupy our place as the Giant of Africa.

With dozens of natural resources in commercial quantities buried in its soil, thousands of human resources in the nation, a burgeoning population of youth who constitute over 60 percent of the nation, the profile of the nation as the most populous black nation in the world, there is no doubt that Nigeria has all it takes to lead the world if it gets governance and leadership issues right.

The acknowledgment of June 12 as the nation's Democracy Day is a tribute to courage. I, therefore, extend deep gratitude to President Muhammadu Buhari for actualising the long yearnings of the people for the recognition of the day they freely gave their mandate to a candidate of their choice, Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, in an election regarded worldwide as the freest election in Nigeria.

Happy Democracy Day, Nigerians.

Osun government commiserates with Pastor Adeboye over son's death

The Governor, government and the people of the State of Osun received with pain and shock, the news of the demise of your son, Pastor Dare Adeboye, and wish to express our deepest and sincere sympathy on this sad loss.

Dare was one of your seeds who had chosen to follow closely in his reverred father's footsteps.

No parent deserves this kind of loss. We feel your pain. Our dear state has lost yet again another bright light. We just buried Yinka Odumakin and now we have to mourn the loss of another young one.

We take solace in the exemplary life of Pastor Dare Adeboye and the peaceful way he went to be with the Lord .

We pray that the Holy Spirit will comfort you, your wife, the entire family and indeed the Redeemed Christian Church of God flock. May the Lord make available the Balm of Gilead and see you through this trying period and grant every member of the family the fortitude to bear the loss.

Signed:

Funke Egbemode
Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation

Zulum, a man of strong character, conviction -- Oyetola
..as UI alumni association honours Borno Gov

Governor Adegboyega Oyetola of Osun has described his Borno counterpart, Prof. Babagana Zulum, as a man of strong character and conviction who is determined to carry on despite the daunting security challenges in his area.

Osun Governor said but for his strong character and conviction, the enormous security challenges in the State were enough for anyone to run away.

Oyetola spoke in Ibadan on Saturday at the 2021 Luncheon & Awards ceremony of the University of Ibadan Alumni Association, where Zulum was honoured by the association as both Most Distinguished Alumnus and the Alumus of the Year.

"From the documentary we just watched, I can see that the governor in less than two years has done tremendously well. And like we all know, the reward for hard work is more work. I believe this award will spur him to do more great things for the people of Borno. I congratulate you for these honours. You truly deserve them" Oyetola said.

Zulum on his part, thanked the Alumni Association for the award, saying the honour would encourage him to improve on the tempo of service delivery in the State.

On his part, the Chairman of the occasion and former Health minister, Prof. Isaac Adewole, commended Zulum for carrying on from where his predecessor, Senator Kashim Shettima, left off.

He commended Shettima for discovering Zulum, just as he described Oyetola as a magician, saying most times he wonders how the Governor manages to pay salaries and still carry on with infrastructure development across all sectors of the economy in the State.

Prof. Adewole said that with persons like Zulum and Oyetola as Governor of their respective States, there is hope for Nigeria.

Why I returned to APC- Former Osun SSG, Adeoti.

By Ayobami Agboola, Osogbo

The candidate of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) in the 2018 governorship Election in Osun State, Alhaji Moshood Adeoti, has returned to ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

He formally defected to APC with thousands of his supporters including some notable members of the ADP who have been paddling the canoe of the party before he joined them.

He moved to the ADP after the crisis that broke out during the APC governorship primary in the state.

Officially announcing his defection to his former party at his campaign office Osogbo , Adeoti said he had suffered so much for the party, recalling that he was jailed thrice because of the party, and nobody would pray for the house he built to collapse.

Adeoti while addressing Journalists noted that apart from the fact that he is a core member of the progressive party, said he has no choice than to go back to his former party considering appeals and number of persuasions he had received from the leadership of the party both in the state and at the national level.

The former SSG who said some notable party leaders among whom are the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu have persuaded him to return to the party added that he was going back to the party to resolve the internal crisis within the party.

“You will all recall all the events that preceded our leaving the APC that culminated in my decision, along with my teeming supporters, to find another progressive platform to contest the governorship election.

“That decision was indeed not an easy one, as we did all we could, to make the party leadership see reasons why due process needed to be observed in picking the party’s flag bearer for the 2018 gubernatorial poll In a way, our action had contributed in no small measure to the further strengthening of internal democracy as reflected in the volume of votes garnered by the ADP in the said election.

“We made history in a way, in view of the number of votes (49,742) garnered, despite having barely less than two months to prepare for an election of such magnitude.

“No candidate in the political history of the state has ever neared that feat given that hard choice we made and environment we operated in. Our choice of ADP as the platform to contest the last governorship election was equally not an easy one in view of the numerous overtures we also received from other political parties in the country, freely making available to us their platforms to contest the election.

“We however saw in the ADP, similar progressive philosophy identical with that of the APC, thus we decided to perch there and partake actively in the governorship election.

“Since the said election was held, several political and opinion leaders in the progressive fold across the state and even beyond have been making numerous overtures and mounting pressure on my humble self and my numerous supporters on the need for our chickens to come home to roost.

“The result of the efforts of the likes of the former governor and pioneer National Chairman of the APC, Chief Adebisi Akande, immediate-past governor of the state and incumbent Minister for Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Adesoji Aregbesola and members of the State Elders Forum led by the former Secretary to the StateGovernment, Chief Sola Akinwumi is what we are all witnessing today.

“It must not also go without particular mention the numerous efforts made by the current Governor of the State, Alhaji Isiaka Gboyega Oyetola, who in spite of his very busy schedule, tirelessly mounted pressure on me and my supporters through telephone calls and personal visit to my residence in lwo, in company of the APC State Chairman, Prince Gboyega Famoodun and Alhaji Razak Salinsile, the state Secretary of the APC, on the need for us to return to the All Progressives Congress, where he said we rightly belong.

“Efforts by former and serving state governors across the federation are also
worthy of being mentioned. We also need to commend all the efforts of numerous individual prominent politicians, women and youths groups within the APC, who on daily basis have turned my lwo residence into their Mecca-of-sorts, persuading us on the need to come back to APC and collectively further strengthen the party ahead of all future elections.

“However, our brief but eventful sojourn and investment in the ADP has yielded bountiful dividends, as founding members of the party, who we met on ground and had contributed in no small measure to the party’s sure-footing in the state, are here today to join us in our return to the All Progressives Congress. I believe that together, we still have so much to politically offer the state.

“On a final note, 1, Alhaji Moshood Olalekan Adeoti, hereby declare my membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and consequently direct all my teeming supporters across the state to do the same immediately.

“All my supporters are also enjoined to go to their individual wards in their respective Local Government Council Areas in the state to formally join the party, APC, and actively participate in all party activities.

“We have been assured by the party leadership at the national and state levels that none of us would be reprimanded or discriminated against based on our past political efforts.”

Ondo Deputy Governor Dumps APC, joins another party

19/06/2020

The Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki has Renamed Oshiomole’s Street after Saraki.

The hitherto known Ohiomole’s Crescent in Auchi is now called Bukola Saraki’s Boulevard.

According to some political obversers, the change of name must have been orchestrated by the ongoing rift between Governor Godwin Obaseki and the suspended National Chairman of APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomole.

You recall that Oshiomole has earlier last week used what many political analysts call “shelf imposed committee” to screen out Governor Godwin Obaseki out of APC’s coming Primaries in September.

However, it is now karma time to pay Oshiomole as Appeal Court has unheld his suspension from the party.
